Just FYI Jane Grey wasn't a wife of Henry VIII she was (I believe) the cousin of his son Edward. At the end of his reign Edward gave the throne to Jane because he didn't want his sister Mary to have it because she was Catholic and was more than a little crazy. So when Jane became queen that pissed Mary off so after nine days Mary was able to overthrow Jane and beheaded her.

I read _Between the World And Me_. I agree that it had a way of articulating what I already noticed about racism in America. It had some many important things to say. It also raised points that I never thought of, but after hearing it, changed my perception on racism. But, and I feel bad for feeling like this, I didn't like the writing style so I almost put it down a few times but kept pushing because I knew it was an important read. I ultimately finished it and I'm glad I did and would still recommend it.

Jane grey was put on the throne as a power play by her family. She wasn't married to Henry the 8th. She was on the thrown for 9 days until princess Mary was able to take her rightful place on the throne and Jane was tried for treason. Ok I'm a Tudor history buff and lady Jane gray was one of my favorite stories. The book is a sorta reselling of that..

Currently reading 2 A.M. at the Cat's Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino - very interesting. I'm reading the version with the darker blue color with the characters on the front. The cover was eye-catching and made it look like it could be a fun read, and it's been really enjoyable. I've never read this author before, but I very quickly fell in love with her style of writing. Unique, painfully funny, and beautifully descriptive. Also just finished Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. Such a morbid and interesting twist on the classic Wizard of Oz. Long, but worthwhile. Can't wait to dive into the rest of that series either. Always loving your channel!!

Interesting to hear your opinion on "Every Heart a Doorway." That was one of a few things that sort of bothered me through out the book. I can't really say that I liked any of the characters, and I wasn't quite sure how I was suppose to feel about the ending. However, I still REALLY enjoyed the book. I thought the entire concept was great. Luckily it was short, if it had been longer I probably would have been more nit-picky about plot details.

No not extremely angry! I guess it made me more "woke" in a sense about the influence African-Americans, (this woman in particular) had on the medical industry. Also, the story of her life is something to get wrapped into as well. I think it was a beautiful incorporation of science, a little history, and family values.

Majority of the books on your list I've never heard of and I love that. You're a such fictionista (yes, I made that word up just for you:) Anyway, thanks for all your colorful commentary, my interest in these titles, especially The Vegetarian, is piqued. But right now I'm sampling a variety of literary-fiction, Dostoyevsky mostly. I like his style a lot. Have you read him or other literary-fiction writers?

+Kenya Nelson "Fictionista." Love it lol! Han Kang (THE VEGETARIAN) is literary, as well as Donna Tartt (THE SECRET HISTORY) but if you mean Dead White Guys and Their Classics, I haven't reread most of them since reading them in school. I do plan on rereading CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and THE GREAT GATSBY (one of my faves of all time) as well as several Jane Austen novels, though I'm not sure when. So many books!! :D

And anyway, I started reading The Vegetarian... I'm HOOKED! It's very well written and sort of insidious. And I think we have similar taste. After sampling all of Dostoyevsky's four major works (The Idiot, The Possessed, C&P, Karamazov Bros.) I've committed to The Possessed (C&P is up next, for sure) You're such an inspiration, thank you for being you! I'm really looking forward to your A(meriie)mazing anthology! :):)

I feel like youre very good at dissecting and evaluating the elements and effects of a book. I aspire to be writer as well, but half the time I find myself reading through an entire book, having tons of fun escapin reality(which is good, but not good all the time) and not gleaning much in the perspective of a writer! Basically, a video on how to read like a writer. I really hope you respond to this! So wait is My Lady Jane about Lady Jane Grey? Because I'm quite sure that she wasn't Henry VIII's wife; she was the queen (for 9 days) after Edward died, I think. Sounds intriguing though! .

Yes, it's about Lady Jane Grey! Though "Melli loves books" (see comment) did clarify that she was put on the throne but didn't actually marry Henry VIII. :)

i read the vegetarian and it was interesting. generally, i prefer books that are edgier and challenging like this one. but i am a bit tired of women who succumb (through their own actions or those of others) to their circumstances. it's made especially worse because the protagonist, the woman, victimized and ultimately weakened by mental illness. but it was an interesting look at korean culture/vaues/family structure/male-female dynamics, etc. i guess i just want to see women be more triumphant, even when they make tough choices.
