Love that this is a scratchy old recording. Really adds something to the memories of that time. One of the all time best romantic songs. John was sweet and smooth and the band was too. ❤

Wow, time sure has a way of getting on by! I remember watching this very episode as a 20 year old living in Knoxville, TN. We were all so young back then. Had it made and didn't even know it.

The guy in the tuxx on piano & sax at the time was a professor at Indiana University school of music. After the album "nothing matters and what if it did" I believe JcM never used a piano again in his arrangement there (I think they called him the doctor) after his departure on any other records .Larry Crane looks like he's 14 in those early years ,

The keyboard/sax guy in the tux is Eric Franklin Rosser. After he left Mellencamp, he moved to Thailand where he taught music to kids and became involved in child pornography. He had the dubious distinction of being one the FBI's Ten Most Wanted in 2000

“In his hometown of Bloomington...” while his band member is literally wearing a Seymour High School t-shirt. I get it though, I’m from Columbus, my dad’s from Seymour (Dudleytown really, but no one would know where I meant if I said that), so Seymour it is. Also, I’m convinced that the numerous Mohlencamps and other various spellings, that are scattered around rural Jackson County cemeteries are in fact Melloncamp’s. That’d also mean they too came from roughly the same area on the German/Netherland border that so many Jackson County family farmer’s originally came from. Small tow- I mean, World.

What's with the hair? I like his long hair better... this is too clean cut but he still rocks. This is one of my favorite songs, after Jack and Diane.

That’s the name I like best! I know it and now it’s less suggestive. Well, that’s what is know in a real small town. Folks know just about everything about everyone. The most special thing was those real helpers were not radicals as today’s Democrats are!

Always found him musically boring....I was born and raised in rural "small town" West Kentucky,so I really don't like hearing about my boring upbringing in his lyrics...This is the same reason I don't like Country music...I like my Rockstar's to behave like Rockstar's and I like escaping my boring rural life with Music that doesn't remind me of it.

I think Mellencamp has reached into many genre's through out his career challenging himself's creativity and the music to capture pop, rock , some folk, Southern rock overtones , blue , grass country, even progressive , and R& B sounds .
