They're miming; the whole performance is actually meant to be a parody. Do you really think those guitar sounds are coming from a mandolin and an acoustic 12-string?

Love the fact that they went over the top on showing they weren’t able to play their instruments live! I wonder if the producers even caught the fact!

@@stevehoog914 read about it. The show made them use taped tracks . Read the statement better. Not that they couldn’t play it’s the show wouldn’t let them. I saw them in concert 3 times in the 1980’s . He and his band were incredible! They definitely can PLAY!

4:17 "Sit on my face!" 🤣 Also love how they completely mock the lip-synch thing with the instruments. Drummer has no toms, big doghouse bass on a strap, a mandolin and an acoustic guitar playing rhythm and lead parts. Stellar.

My guess is they were ready to play and the producer said hey wait this is TV you can’t actually play your instruments. So they decided to rebel and make a mockery of it. I have to say I don’t blame them. The argument the producers used was that live music doesn’t sound good through the TV at that particular time.

The Beatles were forced to do these TV lyp-sync's too, but at least the boys insisted to allow the hysterical fans in Audience to listen to them playing live in the studios, regardless of whatever broadcasted. But i believe it wasn't out of respect but serious fears they would tear apart the place in stampede if they didn't get at least to hear them once in there. Real Music not just to R&R but to tame the wild frenzy Beatles or rather, Beatlemanias caused. Which it was a huge part of what they stopped playing live concerts, because like in their last appearance at the Hollywood bowl, George stated they couldn't even hear their own voices or instruments so loud levels the waves of screaming girls around the stadium, drowned the strongest loudspeakers

Live sound is hard to get right, so all artists were required to lip sync to a reliable soundtrack. This shows an "If' you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude by playing as told to but making it obvious that it wasn't as real as it seemed.
