My mother told me, she met Andre. She was a diabetic and had a reaction to a low blood sugar. Because of this, she had to go the hospital. Andre was there doing charity work for Make a wish. He went from room to room meeting all the children until he got to my mother's room. She told him about her condition. She said that Andre weeped for her and said, "No little girl should have to go through that." If I was a wrestler in the 80s-90s, I would've wept at his funeral. Andre was truly a gentle giant, and a saint.

I was sooo happy he said that. During the 3 times I met him, we talked a total of maybe 2 minutes. On his 3rd visit, I had problems with some college football players. I was trying to get them to leave, but they wanted to fight. 5 of them and 1 of me. They got up and knocked over their chairs... then Andre said from behind me... you mess with him and you mess with me... they turned and left. Andre smiled, finished his beer and I never saw him again.

Jake also tried to say he was going to get a feud with Warrior for the WWF title in 1991, except Warrior lost that title at Royal Rumble, and the way Jake told it, this was meant ro have happened around SummerSlam, so either Jake has it badly wrong due to alcoholic amnesia or he is telling outright lies!

Jake seems like a beloved maternal uncle of mine who sadly passed away 18-20 years ago, shortly after my maternal grandparents. Mike was AMAZING and had so many great and colorful stories to tell like Jake. I had the privilege to meet Jake several years ago at a local convention... His recovery and his personality and his incredible way about him make him one of my favorite people of all time, not just wrestler. You cannot say a bad thing about him, now. He had demons, and he had trouble conquering them and he was in a spiral of toxic behavior, as chronicled in Beyond the Mat (showed him at something akin to rock bottom, and he is not proud at all of how he was shown here) and Resurrection (SO inspiring how it turns out), but he rose above it and has become one of the most inspiring figures in wrestling and in LIFE. Thanks for posting this, and the other clips from his time on JRE. I love them.

Never get tired of hearing stories about Andre the Giant. Another one I heard was about a surgery. The surgeon who had to perform the surgery apparently gave Andre the highest doses of drugs for anesthesia to make him fall asleep. But that highest dose wouldn't work. I don't recall how much of actual quantity of drugs was administered but part of the story I think was that the doctor was afraid it would just kill him, because he had to go beyond levels never before given to a human being.

I seen Andre at an airport one time waiting for his flight. He couldn't sit anywhere because all the chairs had those arm rests separating them, Someone managed to remove one so he could sit, and he still had trouble squeezing into two chairs. I just remember his feet coming half up the back of the seats in front of him, and the size of his hands. You could tell he was embarrassed, he some old guy with him almost shielding Andre from people. Although he did let some of us kids get his autograph and was very nice to us. Despite seeing how uncomfortable he was. Kind sad, but as a kid you never pay attention to that kind of stuff.
