    One thing I will tell you about the amp--it's not as great as you think. Unfortunately many, including myself, have had the dreaded failure of the volume pot. From what I read it has to do with the cheap crap capacitors they used. JL is well aware of this issue but instead of offering free repair, they charge to fix the amps. You know the old saying, you're only as strong/good as your weakest link. Sure the woofer is great and the construction is top notch, but they went cheap on internals of the amp and thus many will face the failure and will be faced with a costly repair or moving on to another sub.

    I have had 5 failures of two E112s. 2 failures on one sub and 3 on the other. Full rebuild by JL after each failure. First time the crossovers failed on both, second time the volume pots failed on both, 5th time was an amp failure. They have junk electronics but good drivers.

    @@mak23997 well JL serviced them each time so they know. Then they game me a hard time about the second repair because my subs no longer had serial numbers because they installed amps without numbers on them…. I bought a pair of JTR Captivator RS1s now and will never give JL another penny. When the 5th one failed I gave it to a friend to salvage the driver and honestly I don’t know if I feel right selling the last one as I know it will break soon…

  • @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    2 жыл бұрын

    I never had the opportunity to listen to the KEF sub. However, I’m familiar with the theoretical spec of it. From the spec standpoint, the KEF should go deeper than JL. However, having listened to many dual-opposing drivers (push-pull), they tend to be less tight than the JL.

  • @ravington666

    @ravington666

    I am trialing both atm and really wanted to keep the KEF due to it's slightly smaller footprint, nicer looking exterior and more evenly distributed sound due to it's dual drivers but....... after listening to both back to back, the JL is the one ! The bass texture, note to note distinction & tightness are on another level but primarily just when the KEF starts rolling off when you really push it....the JL just doesn't back down !

    Looks can be deceiving, I would like to know the Theil/Small parameters before I pass judgement. Although a cast frame and large double magnet stack look impressive and are not likely to be on a budget driver, the T/S parameters are important. My priorities for bass are clean and low, so a low inductance, low Q and high BL( motor strength). I only build since seeing what Energy sold me many years ago! I also have a sub amp that has a low noise toroidal transformer design with a high order high pass filter.

  • @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    2 жыл бұрын

    Quite honestly, even after calibrating hundreds of E110 experience, I never encountered a single problem like that. If you are good with soldering, in theory you can do it yourself without changing the entire plate amp. However, if you don’t hear crackling while NOT touching the knob such as while watching movies etc, I would just leave it as is. It’s not like you keep changing the sub volume anyway.

    @@DavidSusiloUnscripted The problem first happened on its 3rd year of use. Back then, it only crackle when I turn the knob. However, I recently re-calibrated it and the problem worsened. The output level will suddenly shoot up by itself and I need to turn the knob up and down to calm it down. I have used it for 6 years now and I think that there is some sort of weak point within the amp making it not durable.

  • @DavidSusiloUnscripted

    @@FatSn8ke so it may not only the knob that’s the problem. Perhaps the input stage is wonky (usually caused by leaky capacitor). When something like this happens, it’s best to have the plate amp reconditioned by JL so they also check (theoretically) all the caps on that amp. 3-5 years, regardless of brand, seems to be the “lifespan” of a plate amp.

    Yikes....this is cringey. JL Audio is the most overrated brand in home audio subwoofers. I had 2 F113 fathoms for a long time and every upgrade since then has crushed them. They are an old outdated design with low output comparatively speaking to an industry that has blown by them. They are ok for music, but in no way can they be recommended for movies, they dont even have output below 20hz! Also, you compare these little mini JL's to Monoprice subs....compare it to the new 16" Thx version and look at that units output and distortion numbers....it has more output than a Gotham with less distortion lol.
