Yeah, the face paint solidarity was great. For a guy like Sting, who isn't really known these days for long drawn-out promos, THAT is how he expresses himself. He's entirely capable of doing good promos, maybe he just prefers being the silent brooding type. All fine and good. But he expressed himself there, and it was fantastic.

I commented on some video months ago, inquiring what Sting's relationship to Darby was, and people basically said it was to kind of help get Darby over, mentor him, so on and so forth. I remarked that it was a bit unclear to me as a new AEW fan, because Sting didn't seem to be doing much...but it absolutely needs to be said...Sting's time in AEW has been light years better than his entire WWE run. And for the record, my wrestling twitter feed has been FLOODED with WWE fans trolling the hell out of the platform about how bad AEW is...but probably the biggest criticism against WWE ever is how they handled Sting. They somehow managed to botch Sting. A guy who was vocal for YEARS about not wanting to go to WWE because he was afraid of how they'd handle his character, and what do they do? Have him get pinned by Triple H. "But but at Wrestlemania." You see how that's worse, right? In any case, yeah, this match was superb. It had several storylines packed into one, which you always want for any tag match more than 4 people (kinda why I hope we never get trios titles, that seems like total overkill). Lots of big AND little spots. The face paint solidarity, I'm sorry Brian, was great. It was fun, it showed just how much Punk loves this business and wants to nod back to it whenever he can, and let Sting and Darby express themselves since they're not massive talkers. The MJF tumble over the rope, that was scary, they need to work on that going forward, but all in all, really good TV.

I wish they hyped this main event up even more. You had great talent but they only had a small mic spot with Punk quickly organizing the match in previous weeks. But it should have been a lot more. That said, the segment in total was great. Both teams had unifying themes going with FTR/MJF in yellow trunks (signifying cowardice) and Punk/Sting/Darby with the face paint. I think Punk's facepaint was supposed to be of Sting's match against Flair. Not sure which one but it got over with Flair for the attribution. The match was traditional pro-wrestling with a few fancier, "modern" moments thrown in. But everyone knew their role and looked to be having a blast (except for MJF on that crazy bump on the outside). Good but simple story telling here with the teases between Punk and MJF because they know that's the encounter people want to see. FTR must have been having a time of their life getting their chance to work not just with Sting and Darby again but Punk. The moment where Punk chased MJF around up the stairs was pretty amazing if you think about it; showed pretty good cardio for both guys, especially Punk. Sting got some great moments here. His headbutt to the crotch is his version of the Flair flop. But it works for a guy like MJF. Same with Sting not selling MJF's chops and MJF trying to pretend that Sting is a swell guy. It might be comedy but it's not over the top and bad. The Darby dive was insane and decently setup. Darby was also doing a lot more simple, straightforward wrestling that got over. Like him doing a simple body slam before selling exhaustion. He basically was playing a bit of Ricky Morton here. Also, I loved the PowerPlex tribute to Power and Glory by FTR. Bringing back old late 80s tag team moves here and there is cool to me. I was amazed that they gave these guys 30 minutes to go. It didn't feel like 30 minutes and was a fun match that never got boring. But here's the other thing. No one else could do what FTR and MJF did in this match on the heel side (maybe Bryan Danielson but especially on the tag side is where the biggest problem is). There isn't one team that could set things up in a tag fashion that FTR does. And MJF knows how to work against a guy like Sting because he's a traditional heel with an updated arsenal. I liked the make up bit with Punk. It was telling us he was a little Stinger back in the day too. So he got to fan boy a bit here and tag up with a legend (even though Punk is a legend now too). Also, it was a unique moment for Punk because he's always been the lone wolf type and this showed a completely different side to him, which is something I really like about his run in AEW in that all his matches and situations have been unique and interesting. Poor Dax though getting three finishers by these guys. But it was Christmas so they needed to send the fans home happy at the expense of the best tag team. I do agree that FTR getting pinned was sad. We knew it was coming. But there really isn't anyone else in AEW that can do what they do. The Bucks can't figure out how to be heels, much less wrestle good matches. The Lucha Bros + Pac would just be a sloppy mess where Fenix would do horrible moves to get himself over and no one else. No one in the Hardy Office could do this. Maybe Adam Cole with Fish and O'Reilly but they're going to be buried on the midcard with the clowns. So by the time Adam Cole is ready to face a guy like Punk or Sting, they'll be at the same level as the Hardy Office because of the damage of them fooling around with the Best Dorks. That said, I think besides Sting, the one person that hopefully benefited in this match was Darby Allin. Sure, he wasn't the guy getting the pin but I really liked the stuff he did here. It was wrestling, he slowed down, he sold and what he did looked good. Since you had some great talent in this match, I'm hoping that all the people in the back took a hard look at what these six people were doing and realize that you don't need a billion moves in a match if you have talent that people care about and know how to tell a story.

The problem with the Young Bucks right now is that they joined Omega in the Elite and once they were finally able to break up the Elite Omega had to leave to take care of the injuries he has been wrestling through for several months. They know have to build up a completely different story to break up Adam Cole and the Young Bucks with the undisputed Era, but of course they had to wait for O'Reilly's WWE contract to end so a pointless feud between Cole and Cassidy leading to the debut of O'reilly was the best choice they had. We finally got that Adam Cole will he stay with the Young Bucks or rejoin his NXT/ROH/PWG gang. I for one do look forward to the Young Bucks vs reDragon match with Adam Cole watching on the sideline trying to decide who to stay with. We can finally see the Young Bucks being faces again which is the best option for the Young Bucks because their heel turn was the point when they started to oversaturate their dumb silly stuff.

That kid is getting so much wise and great advice from sting and Punk. So damn happy for him. He is probably my favorite one right now. Darby shirts would be in my closet for sure. Also, I am gonna say even though this might be a bit too early to do so. I called it. AEW is gonna start goofy and slowly but surely turn great like Mid south of the modern world and Early WCW and mid 90's WCW. This is going to be a great turn around the more they have like this the more lapsed fans and new fans WILL come. All Tony has to do and it's his one job is follow the Field of Dreams rule. If Tony builds it, they will come.

Anybody who really pays attention to his matches can clearly see glimpses of exactly how athletic and flashy he can be if he were to ever show off (Potentially as a Babyface).
