I’m in the process of reading Bret Hart’s book and he mentions one particular time during his days in Stampede when he and brother Keith I think it was wrestled a tag match against Dr. D Dave Schultz and Dynamite Kid. The Hart brothers were red hot and had the crowd eating up every second of the match until the finish where the crooked ref missed a cane shot from Dr D and the Harts took the fall. Whole place came unglued as angry Calgary fans and cowboys began to storm the ring. Dr D wound up breaking his cane in two he was swinging so hard and Kid just started punching the shit out of anyone who got close enough like the pit Bull he was. By the end the two heels were back to back holding off the mob until Stu and security could come down to calm things. Great stuff man.

Didn't the "History of Fans Jumping in the Ring" start when wrestlers, back in the Carnival days, would actually challenge fans to get in the ring and wrestle them? The first few takers were Carnival employees who would make the wrestler seem beatable. So when the, typically big and dumb, "Hometown Hero" would step into the ring, all his friends _knew_ he could beat the wrestler. Until the wrestler actually used legit submissions to make the local boy tap out and/or pass out.

  • @VladamireD

And if the wrestler couldn't take him for whatever reason, brawl the rube outside so another carny could give him a whack with a board across the back of the head. That's less what they're talking about here though and led to the "fan challenges" heels used to do up until the 80's. I seem to recall a clip of Corny talking about King Kong Bundy doing a "Body Slam Challenge" where fans would try to body slam Bundy for a cash prize. Of course those were usually angles to get a heel over or build up a potential match (in the style of Iron Shek's Persian Clubs or Lex bodyslamming Yokozuna on the aircraft carrier).

Jim's talked about fan challenges/wrestler challenges. He doesn't like them, most of the time, for liability reasons, once citing a soldier who was getting stretched out and decided to cheat and bite the wrestler's finger off. The wrestler, naturally, got angry and started beating the soldier even worse, which lead to a riot.

That’s a different type of fan-in-the-ring situation. The carnival situation, the fan was practically invited in. I remember Corny talking about this back in Midsouth where there was a standing challenge: any fan could go backstage and sign a release and get in the ring. The only problem was Watts would always put Dr. Death in the other corner. Good luck, buddy. But that’s a totally different situation than a fan trying to storm the ring because of some heat that heels got.

One time we were at this building where the entryways for the faces and the heels led off of this weirdly constructed, kind of confusing short hallway which led to the single dressing room. One night there was a tag match going on with Larry Santo and David Baker heeling on somebody, I forget who, and this little girl of about 6, who was morally certain she had just entered the babyface door, burst breathlessly into the dressing room and hollered "THEY NEED HELP OUT HERE!!" and then she realized she was looking at me, Hot Property Mike Mitchell, Gene Spurlock and Memphis Mafia Danny Marlo. Thank God we were all heels. She went "EEEEK" and fled.

My brother and I recently watched Starrcade 96 and a fan hits the ring during the main event to get at Hogan. Hogan gets a few kicks in on him but it's mostly the referee grabbing him, getting in a few shots and then shoving him out of the ring to the security staff. What's interesting is that earlier in the show Sting is walking through the audience and he kind of bumps into a guy fairly hard and the guy is on camera for a few seconds and looks really pissed off about it. At the time we thought it was odd that Sting would bump a fan like that but later when the fan hits the ring I'm 99% sure it's the same guy! So maybe he was trying to start something with Sting or he's just a jerk and wouldn't move aside so Sting body checked him. Or the bumping was accidental but the guy got all worked up about it and eventually hit the ring later in the show.

Jim Cornette's interviews with Ron Fuller are freaking priceless. EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING!!! HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!! Plenty of stories about fans jumping into the ring. One of the funniest was when a riot started, and the police officer jumps in the ring and points his gun at one of the wrestlers, and that's just before the gun gets knocked out of the cops hands and lands in the rioting crowd. Thank you Mr. Cornette for those great interviews.

Years ago in my small alabama town community center (capacity would only hold about 50 people around the ring. Whole place was a fire hazard) it was a mike "action" jackson show. I'll say this angle was taken too far because it turned basically into a riot when the heel handcuffed the baby face to the turnbuckle and started lashing him with a belt. Dudes back looked like he was paying for our sins. The crowd came unglued. Women and kids screaming their heads off in a tiny metal building. Stuff being thrown, the 3 poor guys that were working security are probably scarred for life fighting everyone trying to get in the ring. I literally thought someone was gonna die. They had to rush the heel to the locker room to get his bag then he pulled out of the parking lot like a bat out of hell with his gear still on. What was worse was the baby faces children were there and saw that done to their father. Idk if they were just going all out for the shock factor or it was some personal beef between them but it was brutal.

At a Georgia Championship Wrestling house show in Saginaw, MI. back in the early 80s, I seen an old man rush up and punch Paul Ellering in the back, while he was on his way to the ring (Ellering just looked at the old man like he was a dumbass). The police jumped right on the guy, and Nick Patrick (who was that match's referee) instantly started hollering to the police officers, "We want him arrested, and yes, we are pressing charges!" It blew my mind how fast it all happened!
