To be fair, as someone who spent ten years serving adult living with all kinds of mental illness, some of what he describes sounds mildly manic, but not to a degree that seems problematic. This looks like self-supportive art therapy. What I feel concern about, as a degreed artist and art teacher with training in material safety, is that he might not know enough about safely enjoying his art. Jim describing using paintings as tables to eat off of is NOT a good idea. I cant tell if he has adequate air flow in these spaces, and in several scenes he has splatters of paint on his face, hands or arms. Even with acrylic paint, that's not a great idea, especially if you're doing this every day. I hope he knows not to eat, drink or smoke until he has thoroughly scrubbed up.

When people label living your dreams and doing what you enjoy and feeling comfortable in your skin as crazy; well, you just gotta wonder how unfulfilling their lives must really be. That ain't crazy, that's embracing your existence. People could take some lessons from that.

To 'win' in a conservative society, creative people have to suffer. Problem is, societies built on unbridled creativity don't last long. You have to minimise the suffering while contributing your creativity to society. People think creatives are insane because they're doing things that appear to be insane to a non-creative. We non-creative people just don't get you guys, you're seeing things we don't, making connections between things that simply don't connect for us. Steak, that's because they're no longer chasing the dollar and if you're not chasing the dollar in western culture, you're wasting your life. I live on the border of a very affluent city with a lot of elder residents. I was telling a male friend how you can find really interesting tools, often antiques at garage sales in this community. My companion started talking about how to tell fake from real gold jewelry. I replied at least 3 times that I wasn't interested in jewelry; that I like tools because I'm a maker and he said, "If you're not looking for something with monetary value that you can pawn, you're wasting your time." My friend's a nice guy, but if it don't have a dollar sign on it, he's outta there.

@d d Well, I would propose that a lot of what Hollywood stands for is exactly against the teology of humanity (what makes us human, and what we are "meant" to do as people.) So yes, I find it hard to ignore that it is based of pleasure in consumption off of a corrupted network of extremely influencial business men. And yes, I find that makes it more difficult to see the "humanity" in these, for what they are most of the time, puppets.

Jim Carey took my seat at the Emmy’s when I attended the on camera audience (edit: we were instructed by the TV Crew to fill in the seats and instructed to move back as the “celebrities” would find their seats front row.). He walked up, looked down at me.. and said “taking my seat?” And followed the sentence with a very joyful smile to reassure his joke as simply that. I remember how pure his smile felt. What a, human.

I guess its one thing to make people laugh, but so completely an another thing to convey who YOU truly are. I think viewing life as a voyage of discovery can only be a good thing.

I could not stop crying throughout the video, but not in a sad way. It was like, this empty feeling of "who am I". Thank you Mr. Carrey, saying that you are my idol is an understatement. I have always felt very critical of who I am just because I cannot seem to find happiness or peace in one thing, and I often end up changing my "role" to suit whatever seems to be missing from my life. And this chase has led me to a point of a total submergence inside my own subconsciousness, just to realize that I was me before I even knew what the word "identity" meant. Idk how to express myself right now, I always feel like words spoil what I truly want to say. Again, thank you Mr. Jim Carrey.

  • @Thulgore

I'm 43...........I didn't get to enjoy lockdown. (for some fucking reason being a janitor in a school was considered "essential") I was so happy when I thought I would be. Interestingly, those first few weeks made me love humanity more. (not for myself) I actually saw almost no vehicle traffic. I actually witnessed fathers walk along the creek with their kids. (that is 2 minutes walk from my shitty white trash apartment) I heard fathers tell stories to their kids on that walk. Dogs have never been walked more. I actually also witnessed long term married couples also walking together. (one couple has continued that tradition) (I live in montana........low population per capita) The ONLY thing that changed for me was that I was asked to wear a mask. Interestingly I never get sick and to my knowledge, have never had the flu. For the first time I found a year where the people around me never caught something either. (I've always wondered if I might be some form of a "typhoid Mary".....I don't know) While others were locked down, I was still cleaning the disgusting shit (literally) that I was before. (though less due to no students) I was exposed to even more chemicals as well. Part of the job I suppose. I mourn that initial feeling though. I will never take part in it. It was nice to see people and families actually being humane locally. I don't think I've ever witnessed it with mine own eyes. It spiked right back into hatred in less than a month............fucking humans. How much time you spend looking at yourselves and not seeing anything. I'm human too, much to my chagrin. (not really....but sort of)

You'll find that the older you get, you'll notice more and more people do and say really stupid things that make no sense whatsoever. There is rarely any benefit to falling inline with the masses. In the movie, "Good Will Hunting"--I will paraphrase here, because I'm not a savant like Will--the arrogant Harvard student who was called out by Will for trying to impress his friends by quoting obscure passages from textbooks as if they were his own thoughts and analyses (Will knows the books, and cites the quotes as well as finishes them, verbatim). After shutting the guy down, Will then says, "you spent 200 grand on an education that you could have gotten for a buck-fifty in overdue library book fines", to which the guy says, "Maybe so, but you'll be serving fries to my kids while we're on a ski trip in the Hamptons". Without missing a beat, Will says, "yeah, but at least I'll be original."

He's very introspective too, many people thought he was crazy when he went on his infamous rants in the more recent interviews, but man if they'd actually listen, stop for a moment and think about it, they could perhaps realize there's a meaning to it, and it's constantly happening all around us and to us. Man, Jim is truly someone who tapped into his potential, and he tried to signal to everyone what matters more in life, the connection between us all down to the very matter, and how the outside world is a reflection of our inner worlds. You gotta love that guy, he wasn't afraid to speak his mind for what he believes in. And just a little note, the things he mentioned - I've had them in my mind before that, so it's not that he bamboozled me C:

@tincho by using quotes "like this". Miss quoting is common, I read this comment and did not agree with it, and was surprise that jim said that, after watching the video, turns out he didn't. I think J K took the liberty to rephrase the quote, but it changed the meaning in the process.

@tincho Jim saying he love being alive, and the art is an evidence of that: in this case, the art is an evidence of his love for life. What JK said was art is an evidence for life it self. Not even close, art is no evidence for life why would not art exist in death ? anyway not the same meaning.

This video inspired me to take up painting on my own, and I think I'm developing an addiction. The point of this video isn't to show everyone that he knows or is good at painting. The point is that Jim wants to share how he was able to express himself and learn how he could, in a relatively health way, overcome the problems he may be dealing with in life. Colors, or painting is something that he finds joy in and he believes that it may help others too.

spacebound19 75 Just a minute before I saw your post, I was thinking to myself how I admire the ability to create like that. Even in my youth, I could mimic or expound upon some things, but not conceive. I pictured myself picking up a brush to attempt, and felt like it would just be a waste of paint and canvas. That nothing remotely interesting could manifest. And then I said in my head, it’s because I don’t trust myself. I guess that is the biggest obstacle for any type of expression, discovery of talent or tapping into creativity... trust and letting go of the insecurities and fears. Or maybe using those things to tell a human story, instead of hiding behind or ignoring them. Well, your post has pushed me to revisit my hesitations. Whether by picking up a brush, or picking up an instrument again, after what seems like a lifetime ago. I’m 40. Not at all young anymore; not very old yet. I’m glad you found yourself.

@Alex art is artefact. It's proof of one's existence. I'm not buying into anything. Art doesn't have to be expensive, so that's a non factor. Artists, although are "normal people", I'm sure feel more alive during the act of creating. I can't speak for all artists, I can only speak on behalf of myself. I believe people who blindly dismiss concepts they don't understand are the stupid ones, but hey. Anyway, where is the study on how "normal" most artists feel? I'd like to see that.

@Alex Well done, Alex. You've missed the point. A piece of shit is a piece of shit. Art leaves behind representations of people's experiences. What's more valuable as an artefact? A painting from the 16th century? Or a preserved turd?
