“My father could have been a great comedian but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant and when I was 12 years old he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father. Not the least of which was that: You can fail at what you don't want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” ― Jim Carrey

@@alpinoalpini3849 I think there's a missuse of the word faith and it should be called courage or something like this. Regardless, hope is a enticement very similar to fear that usually make us get stuck waiting for something else to happen (it's not a casuality that hope and fear usually go hand by hand). "Faith" in this context is like saying that you must encourage yourself to make decissions (of course based on data and your own knowledge), and don't let anything else to do it for you.

@@alpinoalpini3849 Your reasoning is understandable but incomplete. There are things in life that we cannot understand. Although we may believe we have agency, it is often an illusion. What about those times when all hope is lost? Those minutes after the earthquake, before the tsunami? No amount of hope and rationality can get a disabled boy in a wheelchair to higher ground in time. But an angel in a helicopter might. There are no atheists in foxholes. Sometimes faith-of the religious kind, just to be clear-is all there is. That’s neither good nor bad. It simply is.

Yes, this has applied to me. I have a family and well I was given an ultimatum that I had to make x or the wife was leaving. The fear of losing her and a potential future family caused me to self-doubt and I did not even try so they stopped my financial support. So choosing fear I lost it anyway. The point being its better to try and fail than not try at all. The same result will happen so chose to try.

All my life before my job accident that broke my neck and skull, I was searching for acceptance and I lost 18 years of my life just to gain regrets and sorrow. Now I'm myself and if someone doesn't like it, well that's not my problem. I still have hope for humanity so that we can forgive and give in, even though you should NEVER give up for the chances in life. Don't wait... Do what calls to you now and you lessen the regrets you have in this short wonderful thing we call life.. Be all you can be and never give up as long as you don't hurt others. Peace.

I just had faith that he is a great person who has impacted my life in such amazing ways before I even realized it. Humor has saved my life over and over. My favorite though is how ALL IN he goes on life, acting, artwork, archeological digs of his own self, and commencement speeches apparently :) Thanks for making the world a better place in your own way and for inspiring others to creatively use positivity and laughter to heal, expand our awareness, forgive (ourselves and others) and to face fear with eyes and ears open. Stare it down because once you see it for what it really is, or at least the source of the fear, you can reverse engineer it into something positive or dismantle it completely.

Other than not having to never worry about money struggles like gas, rent, car payments etc. but now with stable 7 figures++ hasn’t changed anything other than previous money issues. The part that got to me, is the one where he said, “Fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well do what you love”. I lived by these words 3 years ago, when I auditioned for The Voice, while I was in school, taking a Algebre class for nursing school. So what I didn’t make it in the show, & got cut in the first round of auditions for the show, but I’m proud of myself for being the first one in my family, to go after my true dream of being a singer. I can’t wait to audition for the show again, & music is worth giving up my “safe job” of becoming a registered nurse. So thanks Jim for this inspiring story, & powerful speech.

I agree this speech leaves me speechless. But the least I want for you is try to live a normal life. No style in this world is unique. An idea that he has in this convocation ceremony might have been thought by someone else probably 3000 years ago. Only he has converted it and propelled it in a different direction. Great artists steal, good artists imitate or to say they copy others' style. I don't agree with one of his statements about doors keep opening as being so open means we keep spinning in circles and that leaves us as counter-productive. So leave a door as open to yourself when the first door shuts as everything is worth a second chance. NOW debate and discussion opens up minds. Steve Jobs once said "Our lives are going to be filled with work. So one of the most essential ways to live a life filled with contentment, joy and satisfaction is to do the things in believing them as by being good err.. pardon me being great at it and to do what we believe is great work is " to love ❤️ what you do. Do the math is it in reverse of "to do what you love ❤️" . Its like if Jobs' is 12345 Carrey's is 15342 from Carrey's perception its 12345 then Jobs' is 5 replaced by 2 keeping it simple 😅. But perfection is boring tell you what watch his "The number 23" movie and I assume you know Bible or believe in being a Christian or a Jew *sorry as i am only a little known follower of Jesus Christ since i am a Hindu*. Anyway the part that says '2'and '3' is 5 is wrong as the number 23 is devil's number .666 as verse no. 23 says. I believe THAT NOT only devil exists GOD exists. AND in our dharma God or should i say Gods come from religion. I am not saying you accept it. Its easier said than done. BUT I am least trying to convince you that a spiritual life is essential for a healthy living. In the conclusion I quote one of the greatest ever Sir Albert Einstein "A sense of love teaches you more than a sense of duty". ANYway since i know and have watched Carrey's movies since my childhood and spent around 1000 Hours including his most authentic movie till date"Yes Man" since his most lovable movie for me "The mask" I repeat his own quotes"Philoshophy has some holes" and "That's correct Hillman (first name Mr, right man 😂) we all wear masks, metaphorically speaking.🤩" Big Fan of him. AS FOR US and leaving it as a lesson from my DAD " BE SINCERE, BE CHEERFUL, BE SUCCESFUL." THANKS 😊 God bless you.😇 Namaste 🙏

@@destree6348 Anybody who insists on comparing their pain to that of others is doing it out of the same impulse that makes us want to bellow in our sadness. "No one has ever felt as bad as me right now." That will leave them with time. Even if their experience was worse in the grand scheme of things, rest assured that you have evolved beyond them. At least in terms of maturity. That "friend"'s pain is trivial to a child soldier who was forced to murder their own parents, but pain isn't measured on some empirical metric. It is measured within ourselves. In short, never let someone tell you that what you are feeling isn't valid. That is not for them to decide. :)
