Jericho Unearthed: The Archaeology of Jericho Explained

The experts agree--the city walls of Jericho fell down. But does archaeology agree with the Biblical account of Joshua and Jericho? Watch this video as Joel interviews key archaeologists and explains the archaeology of Jericho.

I can't help but feel that, if the account of the fall of Jericho was recorded in secular texts rather than religious texts, then people wouldn't be trying so hard to disprove the dating of it, but would rather just accept the find for what it is: corroboration of an ancient historical record.

This kind of thing happens all the time. Secular historians and archaeologists do this routinely against the Bible. They refused for quite a long time to acknowledge the literal existence of King David. The only reason they had to change their mind was because coins were found bearing his name in the correct layer of soil. So basically if it's in the Bible it has to be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, which is not the same standard that is given to other historical texts.

In good science we don’t prove anything. We make a compelling argument for or against something based on evidence. We can conjecture and postulate or hypothesize all we want. But in the end, we rely on evidence and a quality interpretation of that evidence. I’m this case, having the evidence of the red bricks found at the base lends favorably to the Bible’s account of the wall falling beneath itself. The issue that came up was the dating of the pottery. It seems overwhelmingly, that all the data leans heavily that the Bible was in fact correct on the accuracy. Dating something based on an absence of evidence like Kathleen did, was her mistake.

There is no Problem with Kathleen Kenyon's dating. No big one. She was just 16 years too late. C14 only 6. It is very simple, if you take every Number in the Bible serious. The Bible tells without a missunderstanding, that Shelōmōh must have started the Construction of the temple over 580 years after the Exodos. 84 Years Kings+450 Years Judges Acts 13,20+? Rest+6 Years Conquest+40 Wilderness. So 100 Years + earlier. Yāʿīr 1267-1245 ʿAmmon claims the Land. Yiphtach 1227-1221 said 1267 was 300 Years after 1567. Substract 114 Years of evil Rulers and you have 14 Years Rest. Jos 24,26 Judges 2,7 If we date Shelōmōh to 1016-976 and the Templeconstruction to 1012-1005, where they belong to. Amazing.

I've done some extensive research on Jericho and the excavations done there. I've also listened to Dr Woods interpretation and study on the pottery. I find it very disturbing that most scholars will follow Kathleen Kenyon's final determination, especially with the erroneous way as to how she came to her conclusion. The pottery doesn't lie and the lack of Cyprian pottery not found (where) Kenyon dug is a ridiculous way to come to a conclusion. (She dated the sight on what she didn't find). Not to mention she seemed to have ignored the pottery which was found by previous digs and her own. I believe Dr Bryant Wood is correct and this was the Jericho of Joshua's time. Everything about the Tel coincides with the Biblical story to a tee. To refute the facts is blindness.

I’ve never read a Bible, so I don’t know what the mythology of Jericho might be. I think a positivist research approach would be most appropriate here: the truth exists in the ground, waiting to be discovered. The preconceptions of the investigator don’t alter that... or shouldn’t. Even a phrase such as “in the time of Joshua” shows the inherent bias and consequent flaws of this research. How do we know that a wall fell all at once? I’d see the same results if the climate got very dry and the people abandoned the settlement. Later it would be destroyed by fire (high points get struck by lightning...) the walls falling over the next few hundred years. No battle necessary. Pottery is useful physical evidence of settlement and scrolls are an interesting record of what some of the people wrote (which may well not be strictly factual, of course) but organic materials such as bones or teeth ought to be examined for the purposes of radiocarbon dating. The burnt wheat (quantity?) would also be worth investigating closely. The stories, less so... unless you want to do sociological research.

I've been to Jericho with a tour. They pointed out the "Tel" and there were also sycamore trees there, which I found most interesting because we have sycamores all over northern Indiana. Jericho is the world's oldest city they say. There were other unusual events recorded in relation to Joshua like the standing still of the sun and the backward flowing of the Jordan. So the wall falling down isn't much different. God favored and helped and loved those people. Later they rejected the Messiah long awaited by Moses, Elias, Joshua, David, etc.

To me, this story is one of the best and most frustrating and blatant examples of anti-biblical, dishonest, agnostic/atheist bias in academia, regardless of whether Ms Kenyon was aware of it in herself or not. I believe she was aware and stood on it anyway. What a joy it would be to have a clearer image of history had it not been the damaging effect of this bias through generations of historians, archaeologists, and scientists for more than 100 years now.

If you want a " clearer image of history" then read a Real history book...... Not a Book of Fictional History............ There was no Joshua conquering Jericho because there was no wandering in the desert and there was No Exodus or Moses. FOR YOU WERE [NOT] SLAVES IN EGYPT. THE ANCIENT MEMORIES BEHIND THE EXODUS MYTH. Haaretz Apr 19.. 2019 by Ariel David. The Passover narrative is one of the greatest stories ever told. Also...IT NEVER HAPPENED. For the biblical chronology to hold any water Moses must have led the Israelites out of Egypt in the late bronze age between the 15th and the 13th century BC. During this period Egypts control over Canaan was total as evidenced in the Amarna Letters [ An Archive that includes correspondence between the Pharaoh and his Colonial Empire during the 14th century BC] Thomas Romer a renowned expert in the Hebrew Bible and Professor at the College de France and the University of Lausanne explains : " It is not a historical event. There are multiple points where the Passover story does not square with the archaoelogic findings........ But the broader issue is that the Bible simply gets the chronology and the geopolitics of the Levant all wrong" Tel Aviv University Professor Israel Finkelstein one of top biblical scholars in Israel explains : " The Exodus story in the Bible does not reflect the fact that Canaan was dominated by Egypt...... It was a province with Egyptian administrators" So even if a large group of people had managed to flee the Nile Delta and reach Sinai......... They would still have had to face the the Full Might of Egypt on the rest of their journey. The Bible account is anachronistic and Not Historical....... The Exodus story was written centuries after its purported events......... Egypts Empire in Caanan had long since collapsed......... The Ancient Scríbes who wrote these Tales centuries later would not have known that the Egyptians ruled over all of Canann during this period. No trace of the passage of a large group of people [ 600,000 families according to Exodus 12 :37] has been found by Archeologogists. At the very least one would expect that a large group of people wandering for 40 years would have left some kind of evidence......... Nothing had ever been found. Another scholar... Professor Christopher Rolleston of George Washington University explains : " The most logical possibility is that the Exodus Tale is actually an Ancient Memory of the Egyptians overthrowing and expelling the Ancient Semitic rulers of the Nile Delta........ Known as the HYKSOS or [ Rulers of foreign lands] So there was No Exodus and therefore there was no marching and blowing of trumpets at Jericho. You have to hand it those Ancient Scríbes........... They really knew how to spin a good Yarn!!

Only God could have 40 different men write it down without any contradictions whatsoever over thousands of years like that and foretell the future like that!!! No ordinary vibrations could have brought down those walls. The people of Israel had the ark of the covenant, which stood for the presence of God among them. And they had the Angel of the Lord, the Captain of the heavenly host, with them! (Joshua 5:13-15). Of course no walls can stand in the way of such God. I’m inclined to believe Joel’s view of an earthquake caused by power of God than just vibrations from the people running around the wall, which was an act of obedience/faith God operated in.
