Yes ...I enjoyed this tremendously But I do not dicount the sumerian Record of enki and enlil In the epic of gilggamesh or Niasudura and his construction Of an ark that weathered the great flood. In these writings....of which they are sadly fragmented with sections yet to be discovered.....we lean of The ark....the flood....the creation The garden of Eden. ..and the gods That were physical and breathed life into adamu. The sumerian Record cannot be Used only for the pieces that fit ones own doxy.....but rather if one Or a hundred pieces translated are Acceptable mainstream...then... It follows that the sumerian Record must be looked at as a whole without cherry picking . If that were done.....our view of accepted history becomes questionable....and tremendously Exciting for the whole of mankind.

Do not feel sad , I have a great opinion of you and other people who study and do their research have too. I love Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians. Being an Iraqi whois late dad was from Nineveh in northern Iraq, I remember how keen my dad was on visiting museums he could all around the world and taking video footage of their collections of Iraqi artifacts and archeological findings. This has been one of the most beautifully narrated, well paced to the point of being harmonious and scientifically rich documentaries I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The fact that you covered the Semetic/ Summerian symbiotic history, which is the history of the ancestors of virtually every Iraqi so well is such a feat! My late Dad would would have been thrilled if he had the chance to watch it. The cradle of civilization as we know it deserved this level of professionalism and scientific accuracy. You have earnt a subscriber and my gratitude as a human being and an Iraqi. May you and your wonderful team be blessed always.

I’m an educator and geologist. I just want to express immense gratitude for what you are doing here. Paul, your approach to education and knowledge transfer is what we need more of. It’s very immersive. I am so appreciate that in every episode you discuss how the regional geology shaped a civilization. So few people understand how much the geology of this planet has influenced the shape of our entire species’s development. And as an educator I also appreciate how you give your audience frames of reference. I do this a lot because in geology we deal with Deep Time and for many people this is such a hard thing for them to grasp. In this episode, I admire how you help people understand the spans of time we’re dealing with here by using landmarks they will already have a feel for - a sort of time sense. How writing, for example, is essentially as old as the extinction of the wooly mammoth, or how Sumer was already considered ancient 1300 years before Stonehenge was ever built, and Stonehenge is older than Rome and the story of Jesus. I wish and wish and wish more educators used approaches like this when transferring knowledge. Thank you 🙏 so very much for all that your team does! This matters, even on those days when it might feel like it doesn’t.

We have no idea how old some of these ruins are, we just have theories but sometimes they could be wrong. For all we know there could once have been a civilisation like us that was completely vaporized by something? There could be so far beneath our feet that we will never find a trace, maybe there is no trace?

As a Syrian who's been taught the history of this area very well in school, and who's really interested in the history of Mesopotamia, I can easily say that this is the best documentary I've seen about the Sumerians so far. I think it's brilliant that the video starts with identifying the geography and geology of this area, then moves to the story of early humans and the invention of agriculture before talking about the Sumerians themselves. This is not only due to how pioneering the Sumerians were, but also to how important it is to provide such background when you teach history. Excellent job :) Plus, it means so much to me that someone is talking about the Sumerians. It is too bad that most people I meet outside of our region don't seem to know anything about the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and the Eastern Mediterranean, which is unfortunate considering how pioneering these civilisations were. I hope to see more videos like this about this region in the future :) :) {Edit}: This comment surprisingly got a lot of attention, so I have to clarify to whoever thought that I was identifying as Sumerian that I would never make such a claim because I simply understand how genetics work. Read my comment again and you will see that I NEVER did that! That claim would be absurd and unscientific considering how much the populations of Mesopotamia and the Eastern Mediterranean have mixed over 5 millennia. Instead, what I'm doing is acknowledging this civilisation as part of the area's "history" and "culture", especially in Iraq.

I have been obsessed with The Sumerians ever since I read the book “The Sumerians” by Samuel Noah Kramer - this was such a thoughtful and well dramatized documentary that so eloquently featured the Laments and Epic of Gilgamesh and other tablet readings like I have never heard or seen before!!! May the sovereign nation of Iraq and all its people embrace their stupendous ancient history, and rebuild and learn to live with each other without the fighting and wars that have caused so much death and suffering for thousands of years. That would TRULY BE THE EVOLUTION OF MANKIND - to leave the slaughter and ravages of war behind!!!

As an Iraqi, we always speak of the ones who came before us. We always mention how great our country was once upon a time. We also mention how our land must be cursed because everytime the people rise, they fall and we fall very hard.. Thank you for this amazing and informational video.

It does seem like the lands within and around today's Iraq were blessed with favourable weather, stable geology and adequate water for civilisations to take root and grow. The problem seems to be that the soils are thin and unable to sustain the civilisation for long. Perhaps the curse is that the growth of civilisation is faster than the capacity of the land, however other lands prospered from the ideas that took root here.

I was just speaking to my grandma and she was telling me about her young days how free and advanced the country and how tourists from around the world would visit. How the work life balance was great. The list goes on but she did mention that after the slaughter of the king and his family, things quickly started going down hill.

I am an Iraqi from southern Iraq. I was touched by the last clip and the lamentation over a civilized empire that lives a luxurious life. How did that era end and humanity still has not learned the lessons of wars and the resulting destruction of humanity? America entered.

I’m on my 3rd time round watching this series, and I still can’t believe how hard it rules. This puts 99% of documentaries - professional and enthusiast-created alike - to shame. The prose is poetic in its simplicity. The footage is hypnotic considering this is foremost a podcast. The scope is epic, the narration dulcet and profound. Its accurate level of detail is just astounding. Better than most college classes. Lots better.

Fell asleep watching a mini-doc on Richard III and woke up to this. Usually I curse autoplay, but on this occasion I must praise it, what a gem! Thank you Sir, for this wonderful education.

You do not understand. I came to realise via study, that this city was built an incredibly long time ago... Two possibilities reign upon my mind to who built this civilisation... The story of the annunarky exposes the most clues to date. The other is of a technological advanced society who rose to this state via great age: Indeed the people would have been of African decent. What we have today are the decendants of the tribes and cultures who invaded the zone of the original tenants, conquered the original tenants and enslaved them :The enslaved where the black people. The enslavers were the Persians. This antiquity is not the property of Persian antiquity. This is the ancient antiquity of black antiquity of old. Every biblical story recorded/presented, is that of black people of ancient periods. The persians have stolen this history and adopted black antiquity as their very own, as the caucasians have also deceived.

Its not really youtube content. Its always first released as a podcast and youtube comes later, but the quality of the content without the pictures is of such quality that the pictures and videos are not that relevant.

@MissaLocke - Ancient peoples were every bit as intelligent, thoughtful, innovative, curious, even poetic as contemporary writers are. ------ Unfortunately, most of them were unable to record the nuances of their thoughts (cave paintings are beautiful, but lack the acuity and nuance of the written word, drawing on an increasingly complex vocabulary). ------- Fortunately, the Sumerians were able to manipulate their environment (ex: using clay for tablets) and building on their burgeoning cities and civil organizations (need for an alphabet) to record those sublime thoughts in detail.

The Bridge Of Sighs by Thomas Hood written in 1844 became my favorite poam after I found it in our computers free library as a teenager. I learned a few new words from it just by context. It beautifully expressed many thoughts, things I had seen, and feelings I'd been having about people and situations in the city I lived in then. I didn't interpret it literally but instead in a more abstract way and despite how long it is I almost accidentally memorized it. I only recently refound it using Google and learned of its history.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for these videos. A reasonable argument could be made that these tales are bleak, but I find them strangely comforting. Your focus on an average human's perception of their empire and your expressive description of everyday life really help me to feel kinship with all people from all times. It's nice to gently remind yourself that political and economic upheaval happens all the time, and throughout it all most people simply wanted to survive and make the most of their life.

You can't learn from it. Different people, different circumstances, different resources, different problems etc. The fact is that what goes up must eventually go down. Civilizations rise and fall throughout the eons and we in modern times are no exception. Though we think we should be. The only thing that is constant is that people survive. Humanity adapts.

I am working on a book series and I plan to have my main character visit Sumer before its fall. When I told my best friend of this, he recommended this podcast and all I can say is that this masterpiece will help inform my knowledge of the region and people so I can try to bring this great civilization to life as much as I am able. Thank you for all of your hard work.

The part where you explain how we still use Sumerian mathematics is just mindblowing to me.

It doesn't end there...we use Sumerian technology and innovations every single day of our lives. Indoor plumbing? Hot and cold running water? Libraries? Urban planning was a viable career choice....that says a lot about how advanced they were. When we say Urban planning.... UR-ban planning.... all roads should lead to Sumeria...Rome was a bust.

Zerregren, I agree enthusiastically. My complaint with many documentaries and science shows is the obnoxious music and the flash of pictures (things moving extremely , darting from here to there.) Yes, "non dramatic voice" helps with the comprehension.

Dare I call your documentaries "contemplative history"? I've watched these videos starting with the fall of Rome, so this is video number 8, and am moved to my core by your heartfelt, intelligent, rendering of history. You, sir, are a wordsmith deluxe, and have that rare ability to synthesize strands of separate truth and weave them into a coherent whole. Wow, so enriching at every level! An Acheologist decided to embark upon an expedition to ancient *mesopotamia...* Included was his team of educated and *skillful technicians.* They began their *expedition* in the epoch near the begining of AD: The excavation proceedeth for a few months; finding multiple artifacts and approximating a date to the begining of what they assumed was the birth of civilisation...? They concluded in their exhaustion: A paper was written in the date and area inwhich these archeologist *believe civilisation started.* They left the zone and returned back to Europe to finish publishing the findings. A further period: Centuries later ; A team researched the findings and traveled to the zone, inwhich multiple expeditions had taken place. They too performed an examination with modern technology of the era, the expedition lasted; almost 5 months, inwhich attempts made, to dig further than all previous successors. Indeed they was succesful in finding artifacts buried further beneath all previous expeditions; the extra length of time planning and digging, concluded a report that civilisation must have *began a few milleniums earlier than previously thought?* They too recorded the findings on a published paper and so it was known, an earlier date for civilisation arose! It's simply a stunning story. This wasn't just a civilization, it was the point in which humans transitioned from being cavemen to modern humans. The fact that the Epic of Gilgamesh is a story we found in this place, and the main character's friend Enkidu is indeed a caveman who Gilgamesh brings into civilization. This is a book, a book so unimaginably ancient yet so modern at the same time. We can relate to the characters but then we must remember that mammoths roamed at the time, and everywhere else on Earth were cave peoples. How amazing the world must have been for the Sumerians, a speck of light in a world of darkness. The first spark of what would become the modern world we live in today.

Fabulous as usual .The haunting ,simplistic piano chords at the beginning of your series of great documentaries ,stirs the soul and says to all of us ,vita brevis . Cheers . 😎🥃

This entire series is one of the most informative, and best produced documentary works period. Hard to believe it’s free.

The phrase those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it (~ Santayana) rings true. The wisdom of Gilgamesh’s reflection upon those who build houses, who in turn raise brothers that tears them apart also tings true today. It’s like the only thing that isn’t possible is creating a society where Empowering sustainable life the ultimate goal. We empower the individual at our peril, because in the end those who receive that empowerment only rejoice in themselves, and never in those who empowered them. The humankind affliction!!! Please someone speak of a cure???

The Ancient Ones. Alien actually was a nickname. Interstellar space travelers. Me and my sons are currently studying Sumerian civilization---this thorough documentary was extraordinarily timely! Thank you for the quality edutainment. Though no amount of thanks would be adequate, we are eternally grateful.

Every episode of this series always brings me close to tears.... It's just always so tragic, imagining these people watching their world crumble around them. I get sad thinking of the art, and language, and culture that just fade away. Nobody will ever truly experience them again.

By far, THE best documentary on the Sumarians I have ever seen. You are an incredibly gifted story teller, who is able to bring a story of pictures to a place that is so real, so authentic, and so interesting, that I am absolutely captivated for over 2 hours. Thank you so much for all of the energy, time, and heart that you put into your work. It is absolutely epic. Much ❤

This was definitely one of the best things I've ever listened to. I cried at the reading of poems written seven thousand years ago and now realize that we too are destined to fade away with time but our words will linger throughout the ages to be heard once again and to touch the reader's heart with peace or despair.

We are at the end of an era and are watching a civilization that no longer has pride in itself or strength to defend itself as it’s cities and institutions slowly fall before the various barbarian forces arrayed against it. Those forces may be barbaric and have been the subject of contempt by members of the old civilization, but they have the pride and self confidence that will be needed to lay the foundation of the next civilization. The only question is will one of them have the organization and strength to form that civilization or will they fail as mankind falls into another dark age?

This is awesome stuff. I love the long run times, too. Really immerses you if you listen carefully.

I am 44 years old, and college educated. And as many times as I heard the names of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, I never knew their source was in the mountains of Turkey, which are so green and lush, yet so steep and foreboding. I also was never taught the meaning of Mesopotamia. What a fabulously well done video and series! Gilgamesh and Enkidu, at Uruk. Darmok and Jalad, at Tanagra.

That doesn't speak well about Western education. I distinctly remember learning meaning of "Mesopotamia" in secondary school (it struck me as the word "Mesopotamia" translated to my native Polish is nearly identical to how a small town in western Poland is named). I just checked English wikipedia and apparently this town - "Międzyrzecz" - was named specifically referring Mesopotamia. Ha, learning never ends. :)

You are easily pleased without question? An Acheologist decided to embark upon an expedition to ancient *mesopotamia...* Included was his team of educated and *skillful technicians.* They began their *expedition* in the epoch near the begining of AD: The excavation proceedeth for a few months; finding multiple artifacts and approximating a date to the begining of what they assumed was the birth of civilisation...? They concluded in their exhaustion: A paper was written in the date and area inwhich these archeologist *believe civilisation started.* They left the zone and returned back to Europe to finish publishing the findings. A further period: Centuries later ; A team researched the findings and traveled to the zone, inwhich multiple expeditions had taken place. They too performed an examination with modern technology of the era, the expedition lasted; almost 5 months, inwhich attempts made, to dig further than all previous successors. Indeed they was succesful in finding artifacts buried further beneath all previous expeditions; the extra length of time planning and digging, concluded a report that civilisation must have *began a few milleniums earlier than previously thought?* They too recorded the findings on a published paper and so it was known, an earlier date for civilisation arose! Centuries later: After multiple expeditions by professors and professionals alike; A team of archeologist enfluenced and financed by wealthy bussiness and polital interest gathered a team of recognised archeologist and paleontologist for the latest expedition; After *Nine months* into the expedition with advanced equiptment, the team acquired a large haul of artifacts that concluded civilisation started much earlier than previous unearthed; They decided to stop any further expeditions in the zone. A report was examined for the project, claiming earlier periods existed, than previous dates suggested, civilisation began? A publication of the latest report for the expeditions of the neolithic dynasty; Concluded: Results proving the antiquity of the discovered artifacts existed before all previous artifacts.. I’ve always been fascinated with ancient Mesopotamia since childhood…perhaps not as much as Ancient Egypt. My fascination with Egypt led me to travel to Egypt 3 times now. After watching this documentary, I booked an impromptu trip to Iraq back in March of this year. I was there for 3 weeks. My trip to Iraq was a life changing experience on so many levels, one of the definite highlights was visiting the Ziggurat of Ur. I was so moved and emotional whilst sitting on the summit of the Ziggurat. I was the only tourist there at the time… it felt as if the universe had intended me to be there. I spent a good 2 hours lamenting and pondering at how magnificent Ancient Mesopotamia would’ve been. Thank you for making this…it inspired me to travel to a country that I would have otherwise overlooked,

It's strange to think about the Spenglerian cycles of civilization, especially in these times as many people feel like Western Civilization is on life support. The irony of history seems to be that the more technology and trade your civilization develops, the more vulnerable it becomes. Just imagine the utter chaos and barbarism that would ensue in a matter of days if for some reason our just-in-time logistics would fail in a large city. All it takes is a solar flare for us to be reset back to zero and utter lawlessness.

@You are correct But Indeed. I don't see any clear way of breaking the cycle though. It almost seems inevitable that civilizations will rise and fall - it's almost as if it follows the cosmic law of death and rebirth that seems to govern all matter in the universe. Even stars are born, live and die - and the brighter they shine the more explosive their death becomes. The same seems to hold true for human civilizations - the more impactful and grander they were the more chaos and suffering awaits for those who live to see the end and I daresay that modern Western Civilization has been more impactful than even Rome or Britain (WW1) was. There seems to be some form of genetic drift towards an entirely different type of man that governs late stage civilizations compared to early stage ones. IIRC the medieval Arab scholar Ibn Khaldoun dealt with this seemingly cyclical nature of civilizations. His theory was something like the idea that civilization sterilizes man in a spiritual way. The barbarians, who shouldn't technically be able to defeat the civilized and technologically superior powerful nations, are able to do so against all odds because of the virily of their culture. As such its seems that all empires must fall and no civilization will last forever.
