JenLas D2.3 Thin-Disk Laser Manufactured By Jenoptik

Ғылым және технология

In today's video I'll be showing you the inner workings of a category of DPSS Lasers called " Thin-Disk ", which is a JenLas D2.3 manufactured by Jenoptik Instead of a pass through gain medium, such as in traditional DPSS Lasers these use a gain medium that acts as a reflective optic. While this is a simplification of the actual optical process ( explained more in the video ) it shares a lot of the architecture of optically pumped semiconductor Lasers. These Lasers contain a Yb:YAG disk that converts 808nm Laser light into 1064nm. Many of these types use a pump diode in the 900-950nm range, however the spectrometer says 808nm is used in the JenLas D2.3 surprisingly enough. Not only will the inner workings be discussed, I'll also go over the optical adjustment points for alignment and the basic electrical connections and requirements needed to run this Laser head.

@19:35 LMAO! I do the same thing! I always give a "Feel" test to see if the beam in my 1W RGB is 'spicey'. I really appreciate you videos. Your channel helped me get back into doing small laser shows. Some of my 'noob' stuff on my channel. Received my variance license 3 months ago. Continued success and safe, spicey beams!

Glad to hear that a passion has been reignited! Lasers have a quality of light that no other can beat! I want to eventually get a white light ion laser going and do a show laser with that. I have a small 300mw ArKr but it needs the right optics. " n00b " stuff was I think when I enjoyed doing shows the most as everything feels so new and exciting, I slid into repairs and custom lighting development since. I am a natural engineer and I must do and build. It was an amazing 7 or so years doing shows though! Keep sharing the light!

Remind me to bring the 2-part urethane silicone next time I come over. We can pour a new gasket real easy. But I agree, nobody does off-the-cuff like Zenodilodon!

Two of the guys who invented the disk or "active mirror" laser, Steve Jacobs and Jack Kelly had their offices right down the hall from me. Steve died of glioblastoma maybe 8 years ago now and Jack is retired. Both really nice guys. No one wanted to touch Steve's office and it was kept shrine-like with all his various optics and awards for ages in his memory until recently. He drove a little red Mazda Miata with optics related vanity plates whose message I regret to say I cannot now remember.

That's awesome! Thin-disk is really cool and there are some crazy optical arrangements with concave mirrors and multiple pump beams. I have to make it out your way one of these days. I hope you're doing well!

Way cool. It amazes me when seeing the state that some folks allow their lasers to exist in. you mentioned that when you bought that one, the cover was off, and it was all dusty. for shame! I had a FOAF who would always show me his new lasers, which happened a lot, because he chose to ignore every single manufacturer recommendation. so he always had a new laser, because he'd scratch up the lenses, run them until the host was hot to the touch, and then keep running them. he'd double the battery voltage, every dumb thing imagineable. This thin disk laser of yours seems to be a bit of an enthusiast device, so it is extra surprising to me that someone would expend the effort and money on a device like that, and treat it like garbage. Excellent video. I always learn things on your channel.

These lasers and many others that I show on this channel may seem like rare enthusiast items, but to some degree that's how they trickle down through the market. Many lasers that aren't red, green, blue Laser diodes are often used in the industrial, laboratory, and medical fields. They are parts of devices that large companies purchase for much currencies. The machines are magical boxes and find there way to recycling facilities. There is somewhat of an active sabotage of such things, such as universities cutting cords on Lasers and other equipment and so on. Liabilities and so on. But, some of these devices are stripped down for parts and some sellers do specialize in finding certain types of stuff for resale. This Laser was probably either poorly stripped out or opened for evaluation and then never closed after failing/being end of life. Who knows the history on some of these things... but that's half the fun!

What's with all the oil all over everything. Is that silicone sweating out of the seals?

The liquid is sweating out of the silicone. I am betting it was a slightly improper mix ratio. I do hope it's not a persistent issue. I have another camera as I burnt out the one I normally used. This new camera has a different mic and lacks any video features/video options... you get " Fine " and " High ". Why not both?..

There were a bunch of these on Ebay about 7 or 8 years ago mounted on active heatsinks and part of an Alcon laser eye surgery assembly complete with optics. They were all up for auction at the same time staggered a day apart (at least 20 units or more) and some could be snagged for as low as $250. The last ones went for quite a bit more than that. I bought two and the only problem found were defective Peltier devices between the laser and heatsink which probably caused beam stability problems. Both units easily put out over three watts @ ~20A/2V. I used a Wavelength Electronics TEC driver for the crystal, and a Newport pump diode driver.

I need to work on mine more. I get a good 14W of pump Laser light, the Thin-Disk looks ok too. I should probably do an extensive wash of all the optics. I just broke the DIY 30 Amp driver range, though it's linear and not DC-DC. This means more high powered DPSS stuff is to come. I also have a Lightwave Half-Note here that eventually will get a video of its own. The driver you used for the TECs, that's the PID1500? I have 2 of those but found it pretty effective to just role my own with LM393s. Have you any information about the PID1500s? I think I have the figured out but it's always nice to get a second opinion.
