Building a Retro Modded Bluetooth Speaker Phone.

Ғылым және технология

Over Thanksgiving my sister brought up how cool it would be for someone to make an old clear plastic wall phone into a bluetooth speaker. About a week later I found a busted up bluetooth speaker and from there I was committed to making her vision come to life. The hardest part was giving it to her for Christmas... It just turned out so flipping good!

This has Ibanez Jem written all over it! I'm mostly into the more retro builds as I specialize in vintage reproductions. Mostly acoustics these days but used to do a lot of electrics and my specialty was double cut Les Paul jr, and various fender designs. I Was 3-5 years back ordered when I finally closed my books and quit taking orders... But I have built a few Ibanez Jem reproductions and they are such a sick guitars. Obviously the vintage ones are quite expensive now, and good accurate reproductions always brought a lot of money and were a lot of fun to build. I made it a point never to take orders for instruments that I wasn't excited to build or passionate about. So turn down a lot of rock and roll style flashy stuff. But the jem is one exception. The chartreuse green yellow and pink go perfectly with this phone. And I think this phone is beautiful. Just Google those up and you'll see exactly what I mean. So even though the past 10 or so years my focus has been on more classic designs... As I deal with vintage reproductions of acoustic guitars and also violin family instruments.. so I've always aired more towards the timeless retro stuff but the Ibanez Jem is one flashy exception that I think is a really beautiful guitar and was very important to how rock and roll music advanced and developed. In other words... To compare it with the car world...Obviously 57 Chevys are a beautiful and timeless design... But there's also a place for those funky 1988 mustangs modded out with the big fat tires in the back and a wicked paint job. 😂 Certain things like that are becoming old enough to be considered vintage.. and are becoming timeless as well.

Too Cool! Using the HV transformers to run the "sound activated" neons was ingenious. Sounds like it has good fidelity for what you have to work with. Nice Work!

I had a bright blue Cicena "Roxanne" neon phone in the early 90s that lit up my entire bedroom with sky blue "neon" (Hg vapor / phosphor) light that would flash whenever someone called. It may have been the most late 80s early 90s thing to ever exist.

What an odd button configuration for the board, determining the different resistances, total pain in the butt way to determine what function to express, coders these days! 😅 Would some clear nail polish have covered the crazing, or would it have fogged the plastic? Great project! I look forward to next year 😁

@@JotticunChapter2 The plasma pens are about as simple/powerful as you can get them honestly. They crank out 20W and use like a dozen parts. I am thinking about doing a part 2 for the ZVS circuits as there is a new style I use. The catch is thus far I, nor JP has been able to make them small enough for the plasma pens. The hardest part of the build is the size, You can get more power and for much easier with a larger tube based build.

@@righteousone1 Yeah there are lots of false claims when it comes to pointers and diode modules for engraving. Legit companies such as Coherent, Laserglow, Laser Quanta, Melles Griot, Lightspace, Kvant, etc will put out rated power. There is a huge difference in promised output between the low hanging fruit of pointers/generic modules and the higher hanging fruit of laboratory/industrial market. It goes the other way too, the 532nm/405nm cheap eBay pointers rated for 5mW put out 50-100mW instead which are eye hazards for sure without any warning.

Great mod job, Zen. That is SO AWESOME! Loved watching your sister's reactions! Truly a labor of love... speaking of which, I was beginning to sweat over the expectation that your moment with that clicky li'l slider was going to turn this into an adult video. "SD card playback" Soo... it's also an MP3 player? Was also shocked to see you using what initially looked like a Raspberry Pi 3A, Lordy mercy! Even Googled the part #, but teven Google doesn't know what da Zen knows... That's gotta be sayin' something!. So, I'll have to let you slide on that matter. But, beware of the slippery slope, my analog friend. Oh I love switches with a good tactile feel. You hardly find them anymore in consumer electronics :/ It can do MP3 yes, that was a nice touch because it allowed the device to play music right away, esp with knowing coppyright and auto detection I figure kill 2 birds with one stone and also have the phone play something I could 100% use while she was figuring out how it worked. The module came from a Tech2Tube speaker. I'm not 100% digital, more to the point I think we have just used it to create solutions to the extent that in respect we lost common sense and individual control due to the plethora of options catered to us. I like simple systems, a smart house for me would probably be a network of strings you could pull to activate a switch in another room. Sure it's a pain to set up but no updates, service fees, or possible invasion of privacy.
