Lightspace Venus RGB 22W Show Laser Main PSU Issue and Routine Maintenance.

Ғылым және технология

In today's video I am repairing another Lightspace Venus 22W full color show laser. The issues I will be fixing include issues with the power supply that runs the laser heads and control systems, minor galvo tuning, optical alignment and other misc routine maintenance.
If you have questions concerning show laser repair please do leave them below in the comments section, I'll be happy to help out!

Thanks for these videos, they're very practical and informative, much appreciated. You mention around 21:07 another video about tuning the galvos. Please could you put a link to that video? That's something I'm keen to have a go at on my homemade 4W laser. I got cheap 25kpps galvos from China and I'm still learning how to get the best out of them!

That lasers guts where so sexy! I have a cheaper blue/green show laser, the blue is more like a uv and makes things glow there is just a single diode for each color. I always wondered if the 2 colors should be aligned when its just making a straight single beam because they are not but I guess I found my answer now and I should adjust it. I really want to run DMX to it to see what can all be controlled via dmx vs stand alone mode, sadly it doesnt have anything like ILDA, but like I said its a rather generic laser and close to 15 years old now.

Hi Z, do you have any 980nm diode pointers from the website which shall not be named lest this comment be insta-memory-holed? The black and chrome host looks exactly the same as for any of the other few dollar cheap visible pointers. If so do you know the power output with new batteries?

Why not use a graphite plate to project the laser on to for alignment? It would absorb a lot of light wouldn't this make alignment easier and saver? Of cause keep it away from the optic because of dust.

What do you do in terms of eye safety when working on a laser like this? Given you have red blue and green lasers running at the same time, are there any glasses you use that protect your eyes from all of them while still allowing you to see enough to adjust the beams?

  • @Zenodilodon

Brightness control and a huge degree of awareness. There are dual lens goggles that will cover most of the laser output from these units, however use of a very bright shop light is almost require to see what you are working on with them. www.survivallaser.com/details/p556088_20873596.aspx

I know it’s different from what they do in government labs and labs in academia… but when working on this type of stuff every day… a great deal of constant awareness is a necessity. similar to working on high voltage lines. you take all the precautions you can but it still comes down to constant awareness. Sometimes you just can’t use beam stops and glasses, it would slow down work to a point where it would be completely unsustainable. It would be like high-voltage lineman trying to use drones so that they could do EVERYTHING remotely. Sure it’s totally possible. But would be a bit slow and costly but you only get one chance. Well 2 I guess if you still have the use of both eyes when starting 😂 Don’t get me wrong …….I use every safety precaution available to me in my lab. But sometimes you just have to lock the big metal door and play with fire. It’s just the nature of working with lasers or high-voltage power distribution. At least with high voltage work… If you mess up ….. it will be easier on the cleanup crew because the little pieces will be much lighter than one big human body

@@hullinstruments Reminds me of the one guy who rebuilds Teslas. He was terrified of the batteries and wore a whole suite and did everything very by the book and maliciously when he started. After a few years the majority of the over caution went out of the window as he grew used to working with the batteries.

BANGOLIN 🤣 even comes with its own cistern flush handle on the side! I've never seen that vent pattern on a capacitor before, and I love the pink resistors! I assume they're an own brand fire-proof version? How come looking at a laser say 50mw can damage your eyes, but this 22w of output is ok? You didn't leave your email address!

Hey i have a question about laser safety. Often times these show lasers are directed directly in the crowd in the eyes of the people wich seems like a pretty dangerous thing to do with such a powerful laser. I have two theories why its not dangerous 1. Beam divergence (the beam gets wider as the soure moves away from you and once it hits the eye of the viewer its not concentratet enough to damage it) 2. The beam is movig so fast that it cant damage anythig because the exposure is so short for any given point. Are my theories correct? And if the 2nd. Is correct do these lasers have safety measures to turn of the laser if the galvos break and stop moving the beam?

  • @Zenodilodon

    @Zenodilodon

Your theories are both correct however sometimes they are nudged in favor of the viewer. There are several layers of protection that can be implemented into a Laser for audience scanning. The most basic one is a half circle lens that goes on the front of the Laser which increases the divergence of the beam. More complicated systems can have something such as Pangolin PASS which is calibrated for the venue and laser to limit the radiation to a safe maximum permissible exposure ( MPE ). MEP is determined with a 7mm photosensor ( Same diameter as the human eye at full normal dilation ) which sets brightness at the correct % depending on laser scanning speed. Good Laser systems do have galvo amps that will send out a fault signal if the galvo stops responding, is moving to slow, or is scanning at too narrow of an angle for more than a very short duration. In the industry there is a saying " Their is NO safe Laser " and properly built equipment comes with an external interlock/remote shut off port of which a button sitting by the Laser technician can be connected. If there is any seen fault that could result in an injury the Laser can be very quickly disabled by the technician. I hope that answers your questions!

what gleu do you use after alignment

  • @Zenodilodon

On top end gear like this with matching metals I don't use any glue after alignment. If it's good machining quality and brass on brass or so on ( no thermal expansion miss-match ) the alignment holds pretty well. If glue is needed I tend to stick with West Systems epoxy or a UV cure glue. West Systems is just about unbeatable!

Great tips & tricks, Zen. Shame about your camera. Oh well, par for the course, eh? I just ordered a $50 Raspberry Pi global shutter camera (arriving Saturday) to help eliminate harmonic banding and blanking of scanned imagery. Don't have an RPi4B? No prob, Bro! I'll send you one of mine, if you're interested. Wow! That's one used and abused projector. Looks like an elephant sat on it, with the bottom cover bent at the feet. 😣 Q1: Is the translucent beam blocking material a PTFE, aka teflon sheet? Q2: I like those knife edge mounts and would like to replace my el cheapos with them. Haven't seen those on ebay nor aliexpress. Would you happen to know a source to share? Q3: Whose galvos are those? Can't be Saturns inside a non-Kvant projector. Too big and wrong X/Y block for C506. EMS6000's in an old X/Y block, perhaps? Thanks for sharing another great video! 😎

Herm, I would kill the camera lol The foot impact happens most likely in shipping or tear down if they stack units. I think they are about 60 pounds! The translucent material is snagged from big screen TVs, it's the the diffusing layer. The galvos are PT-40 Pros, they work pretty well actually!
