Leonard Cohen wrote this. He is one of those artists that is known for writing profound music and then people covering it a lot. He's like more of a songwriter, but he did make records and sing and stuff it's just most people know the covers more. But he's one of the best to ever do it.

I love Leonard’s writing, but his songs and music don’t appeal to me. At least not the ones I bothered to look up. This and “Dance Me To the end Of Love” in particular which I found through The Civil Wars who have an incredible cover of it. Nearly as good as this
@tileux

Leonard cohen’s version is still the best. The song is about people who are broken and aren’t perfect, so it’s appropriate that a guy who can’t really sing sings it. So many people who cover this just don’t seem to get the point of the song. You can FEEL that in how they sing it and that is just a turn off. This version is horrible. The more amateur you are as a singer the more authentically you can perform this song. Try to sing it with musical bells and whistles - as in this cover - and you’ve completely killed the point of the song. This cover is just sound - without the emotion or meaning of the original song. It’s dead on arrival. This is also the ‘non-cohen’ version. It has additional lyrics - and those spoil what the song is about. This is the Brandi Carlyle version and it’s awful. It’s so off mark what the song is trying to convey. I love Cohen’s song ‘everybody knows’ - wry humour at its best.

@@paradiddle5150 The recording process is still exactly the same whether it's analog or digital. I know it's possible to record the guitar and vocals simultaneously but it's _very_ uncommon. And highly unlikely in Jeff's case because he was a perfectionist in the studio. We know he didn't play guitar while recording the vocals to songs like "Grace" so I don't know why he would make an exception with Hallelujah.

I was at the show, and hung in the Smartbar afterwards.......I'm mid 50s , born and raised here in Chicago and at that time I was the ops mgr of the 2d largest record store in the city...a mile down the street from Wrigley. Jeff would pop in the store often when in town. I saw him live a bunch of times - but the Metro show was otherworldly- let me just say this - "more babies were most likely conceived that evening after the show then at any other moment in Chicago music history!!!!" ...When I saw JB play live I always felt this sadness and I would tear up , I'm bipolar2 and suffer with hereditary severe depression and also I believe I can foresee events before they occur .....I felt Cobains death days before it was reported by the news ....I felt that Jeff was a gift to us for only a brief moment in linear time thru the unforgiving universe we spin and swirl thru. Just an artist that no one will truly understand because he was with us so briefly ....his loss hurts as much , or even more then Kurt's and Cornells because this man was taken from us ...he didn't give his existence away.
Jeff’s version of this song is by far my favorite. His vocals and guitar playing are sublime.
THE best version of Hallelujah ever....Jeff Buckley was otherworldly....RIP This song can elicit tears whenever I hear it....the single Tele & Jeff's voice....just wow
Best version of this song ever. Period. What he does vocally is so difficult to do. While playing masterfully under it. Amazing.
9:32 Lex you have no idea how incredible his voice was. But you did noticed this "jewel box" at your very first listening.
This version is the best one of all, hands down for me. RIP Jeff, you are missed.
Sooooo glad you guys did this. One of my all-time favorites. Leonard Cohen wrote and did it first, but Jeff def put his stank on it. I’m at total peace when I listen to this. What a loss…
So glad you’ve chosen this version! For me, this will always be the only one.
The version in the movie Shrek is also a cover, by John Cale (which is my favorite version). For some reason, if you buy the Shrek soundtrack, you get a different cover, by Rufus Wainwright. The Original is by Leonard Cohen.
The beauty of both his voice and his guitar work combined is on another level. He’s legitimately amazing.
Jeff Buckley does a live version of "I shall be released" that is absolutely Killer. Check it out..
This cover of Leonard Cohen's song is a cultural golden nugget.
Jeff My favorite, beautiful song. But I wish more people reacted to Grace or Lover should have come over. He’s such a talented musician.
Almost brings a tear to my eye when I hear him sing this...
This is the version that really sent this song into the stratosphere
That 42 second pause - and the beginning - is Jeff letting his guitar sing. His own voice is amazing, but his mastery of the guitar really shines here. It’s so clean, so controlled, so emotionally and technically complex…it just sounds like he’s floating on a cloud. I feel two voices throughout this song and it seems like they are waltzing together. IMO that feeling is a testament to the amazing musician that Jeff was.
Finally folks, jeff buckley is a genius

Jeff's rendition of this song is the best. His voice is phenomenal. Gone way too soon. RIP Jeff Buckley
The way he performed this song, he just took you by the heart and played with it.
Lex is right on this one. This is very different to the Leonard Cohen original and I can't believe anybody who has heard it could confuse the two. Cohen's voice is the voice of a poet speaking/singing his words with a real rasp. Jeff Buckley has a melodic, gentle very expressive and emotional voice accompanying his equally gentle and melodic guitar. He drowned in the Mississippi taking an impromptu swim, when the wash from a barge hit him. He was working on his second studio album at the time of his death. My favourite track by him is "Forget Her".
Love your family. God bless
it's the connection between the singer and the guitar playing that makes the best version of this song.
Yay! The Jeff Buckley hole. Now it's time for Mojo Pin, Grace, and Lover You Should've Come Over.
This is THE version most people heard on the radio, especially in college towns like here in East Lansing, Michigan.
One of the most beautiful voices ever
Leonard Cohen wrote and recorded the original version in 1984. Shrek used John Cale’s cover from 1991 and Buckley’s version was recorded***(released, not recorded*** in 2007 and he said Cale inspired his version, so that’s why the Hallelujah drop in Shrek sounds similar to Buckley’s. I remember seeing a Joh Legend interview and he described Buckley’s version, “as near perfect as you can get.”

Such a beautiful song 🎵
I went into this reaction concerned y’all didn’t know it was a cover, (since many of the others had the original writer in parentheses.) I absolutely love most of Leonard Cohen’s music, but this is one of those songs that had a whole second life with Jeff Buckley. This song is one I absolutely recommend everyone READ, (or at least listen,) to the lyrics of at least once, because so many people bring their own assumptions from having heard the word in church songs to this song. *One from Shrek was a cover by Rufus Wainwright, (I believe.)
Epic record by an Epic artist that passed way too soon… Thank you for the upload!
The really stunning fact of this song was that it was recorded live. He was playing guitar and singing and he did so while on stage. It’s one of the most incredible performances, I think, ever captured.
I remember the first time I ever heard this song, I was alone in my room with a single candle going. I watched the flame dance about while being totally encapsulated by this song. The magic still hits me everytime I hear this song
As a proud son of Montreal, I can tell you that the original of "Hallelujah" is by Leonard Cohen of Montreal, one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Jeff Buckley got the ball rolling with his version of this beautiful song, and it has since been covered by hundreds of well-known musicians. One of the best covers is by another Canadian, k.d. lang. She will stun you with what her voice can do to elevate "Hallelujah" to the high heavens. Two numbers that must be first heard only as sung by Leonard Cohen are the original 1967 album versions of "Suzanne" and "The Sisters of Mercy". Accept no substitutes, as the saying goes.
This is some monumentally beautiful stuff.

Leonard Cohen wrote the song and you need to hear his version. Jeff's version is excellent though and I understand how folks say "He made it his own".
