OMG. Only YOU!!! LOL You made me laugh hysterically. For real. About the burning down below. LOL. I swear to god that I hope you keep reacting for a LONG time. I'll keep supporting you. Love you so much. This is obviously a beautiful song, but ever since Pentatonix covered it, THAT'S my favorite version.

I remember the night he drowned in Memphis, the truth is that city is so full of music and he was there to record and quietly play some small jazz bar gigs to prepare for a tour and test material, most of us (and music was a huge part of my career and everyone I knew) when we heard about the accident had no more than a vague knowledge of him. There is no more dangerous place to take a drunken swim or a sober swim than the Mississippi River. He had a friend on the bank who could see him one minute, then a ship passed between them and that was it. Tragic, had he been from Memphis he would have known that swimming in the river is death. He’s far more famous in death than he was in life, what a talent, what a loss.

I think the line of cutting the hair is a reference to the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. Delilah convinced Samson to reveal the source of his strength was his hair and she betrayed him to his enemies after cutting his long hair thus making him mortal and weak. (If I remember correctly. Has been a long time since I've had to read that particular story)

Originally written by Leonard Cohen, one of my favorite singer-songwriters, who had the opposite kind of voice- very low and deep. Leonard also brought in a full band with a choir for his original version. But Jeff just by himself with only a guitar is very special in its own way.

My dad, who is a poet, gave me his take on the lyrics. Clearly there is the biblical references, but he sees the entire song as what is happening in an intimate encounter between a man and a woman. The symbolism of "I heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord," as when a man finds what to do to please his woman during an intimate encounter. The fourth the 5th the minor fall and the major lift, can all be related to the process of the woman getting to her climax. Thus, her hallelujah. He also talks about there was a time when he moved in her and the holy Dove was moving too, she being the dove(the joint climax) And relating it back to David who fell into temptation with another man's wife, Bathsheba, and had her husband killed, and Samson and Delilah, meaning the power a woman has over a man in a physical relationship. So ultimately my dad saw this song as a song to put it bluntly, about sex. I would have to research what Leonard Cohen was actually thinking, to see where my dad's interpretation falls, but that was way deeper than what I expected him to say. Believe me when my 70 something year old dad is telling me his interpretation, my eyes were wide open, lol!

On April 2, 2013, it was announced that Buckley's version of the song would be inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces of recorded music. However, Buckley personally did not see the song’s success. Buckley's version was not an instant hit, nor did Buckley live to see the full measure of the reception his recording would ultimately have, due to his untimely death in 1997. The album on which it appeared did not go gold in the US until 2002, nine years after its release. In fact, like Cohen's original, the Buckley version was not released as a single until much later, and it did not chart until 2006, posthumously for Buckley.

Jeff Buckley - Grace (Live- BBC late show) OR Mojo Pin (Live) please! The Live ones is just so you can y'know.. Get a better look/sound of him in general, when you're this good of a musician, the Live videos are honestly better it often adds ON to the original/studio recording they did, especially since they have to do tons of shows on a tour, he never disappoints, trust me bestie. It's what completely made me fall in love with this man and his crazy vocals, he was so so talented, R.I.P. (edit) Also one of the hottest gentlemen to have walked this earth hands down. pause/noH/justsaying/factsdontcareaboutyourfeelings (edit#2) have to add "Lover, You Should've Come Over" (Live) also, sexy a** song.

RIP Jeff Buckley. There are a lot of amazing versions of this song inspired by this one. k d lang, Myles Kennedy, and Brandi Carlile have all done versions that I love. This song was written by the great Leonard Cohen who wrote around 200 verses. I hate that it has been hijacked at Christmastime because it is a song about an earthly elationship. David and Bathsheba and Samson and Delilah are the biblical references and they are in the Old Testament and lust seemed to be the root of those relationships. This is a song about longing, frustration, and sexuality. It's a hymn but not a Sunday church hymn.
