Paul Stanley said that 'Detroit rock city' was one the best songs he had ever written, released in 1976... it was overshadowed by the ballad 'Beth' that became a huge single that year. Stanley said the lyrics were a tribute to a Kiss fan in North Carolina, who was killed in a car accident on the way to a Kiss concert. Kiss wanted to immortalize Detroit in gratitude for embracing this band from New York City w/ 4 guys in makeup & costumes... Everybody thought Kiss were clowns, but they blew away audiences on tour and they were playing arenas in Detroit around 1975 and the Midwest, before they even had a hit record. Their big double-live album 'Alive!' was recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall in '75, and that became their first major album... By 1977, the original Kiss was a global success and had become a pop culture phenomenon.

you should watch the 1999 movie "Detroit Rock City" where kids playing in a rock band are KISS fans and the movie shows their frustrations and adventures on their journey to make it to the concert. The movie is set around 1977 which makes it even more enjoyable to watch. and this song features in the movie, pretty sure KISS themselves are also in it from memory at the end. watching the movie might give you an idea of the hype and excitement around this band at the time.

The original album track has an 'opening' and an 'ending ' ( literally ) that this version edited out . Perhaps they did it to save space or perhaps due to the 'graphic' nature of the end to the story of this track . Either way - you should go directly to the album cut from Destroyer and listen to it again , just so you can experience this as it was originally presented .

  • @Unolewaya

I totally agree that listening to the “Destroyer” cut is a must. This cut is from the “Double Platinum” album, and, while still awesome, it’s subtly different. For those who rocked to the original “Destroyer” version first, those subtle differences were a bit of a shock to the system, but we quickly got used to it.

KISS is my favorite band since i was 7 years old and i'm 49 now, they have so many songs you have to react to. 70's songs like Black Diamond, Cold Gin, 100 000 Years, Strutter, Parasite, Let Me Go Rock 'N' Roll, C'mon And Love Me, Rock Bottom, God Of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud, Love Gun, I Stole Your Love, Shock Me (Ace Frehley singing with a killer guitar solo), Hard Luck Woman, Sure Know Something. 80's songs, Shandi, A World Without Heroes, I Love It Loud, Creatures Of The Night, War Machine. And the non-makeup era has alot of good songs too, All Hell's Breakin' Losse, Heaven's On Fire, Thrills In The Night (one of my favorite KISS song ever), Tears Are Falling, Who Wants To Be Lonely, Crazy Crazy Nights, Reason To Live (beautiful power ballad), Hide Your Heart, Forever (great power ballad too), Unholy (heavy song with Gene singing), God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You II, Domino, I Just Wanna, Everytime I Look At You. The comeback album they did in 1996 with the title track Psycho Circus, We Are One and the last two records, songs like Modern Day Delilah, Say Yeah and Freak.

The album version is arranged differently because the crash leads right into King of the Nighttime World, with no break between songs. I have SOOO many Kiss ‘albums’ from original vinyl, to cassettes, CD’s, bootlegs, compilations, etc… if I’m not mistaken this is the version from Double Platinum, they needed that abrupt ending since the car crash & KOTNTW weren’t part of Double Platinum. Now it’s also possible that this version is on Smashes Thrashes & Hits… but it’s definitely not the version from Destroyer. Im exhausted.

Heard my first Kiss song at 7 years old and yeah, it rocked! Dressed up like the "Star Child" for Halloween. These guys are arguably the first Jewish metal band...they had incredible and ridiculous shows and after parties. They couldn't quite evolve with the 80s, but kept rocking anyway. Chaim Witz and Stanley Eisen are the 2 most famous members. 🤘

I am a lifelong resident of the metropolitan Detroit area. KISS was the first band I ever got heavily into, and my first two concerts were KISS concerts (I was 14 for the first one!). You have NO IDEA how hyped we get when they play this song! My parents actually took me to the concerts (along with a few of my friends)...my stepfather actually made his way down to the front of the stage to snap a couple photos of Gene Simmons for me. Shout out to everyone that was at the January 20th (Paul Stanley's birthday) show at Olympia Stadium!! Many years later, the band held a promotional meet and greet at a smaller theatre...it seemed like every musician I knew from the local Detroit music scene was there, and I was surprised to learn that nearly all of us had been at either the January 20th show or the second of the two shows they played that year...I'm talking like 50 or more of us! Let me add a little more context to the comments that others have already shared...KISS released their first three studio albums from 1973 to 1975. They built up a VERY loyal cult following in Michigan, and a few other places (but especially in Michigan), but their album sales were very low. They decided to go for broke and record a live album in Detroit...it was called KISS Alive, and it was the album that broke them out everywhere. "Detroit Rock City" was released on their fifth album, "Destroyer," and it was meant to be (in part) the band's way of paying tribute to the fans that "got them" before anyone else...even their hometown fans in New York City. The version you listened to is slightly edited, and features an ending that's different than the original (the original version ends in a car crash, and leads into the next song on the album). God bless!!

If you look into the KISS history, you will find they were a huge deal in Detroit in the 70s. It started with a high school football team who listened to kiss to motivate before the games. They had a big deal where KISS came there and there was a huge parade and all the guys from the team were wearing the KISS makeup...

When I saw the lineup of reactions for today, my first thought was, that this is my favorite trio that you r hit since I watched my first Rob Squad Reaction. I know everyone who commented on the ‘God Only Knows’ reaction mentioned Paul McCartney, and the fact that the song was used in the movie Love Actually; I Only Wanna Be With You is just pure classic. And I’m sure many commenters mentioned the cover by The Bay City Rollers, and the song was used way back when, as the theme song to the HBO series “Arliss” with Robert Wuhl. But finishing the trifecta off with Detroit Rock City?!? C’Mon now! EPIC! You need to realize that in the mid ‘70’s, KISS fans were often derided because the band wore garish costumes & makeup, and weren’t considered elite musicians, and were considered gimmicky. To have you two appreciate them, as well as every other genre of music, such a diverse variety and the pure joy you both exhibit when you lock onto an element in a song that emotes a specific reaction… I’m rambling, and feel like I lost what I was saying… but I’m sure you get it.

Was at a KISS concert in Knoxville Tennessee 1988. Ted Nugent opened for them. What a night!!!! Detriot Rock City was the last finale song that night with indoor fireworks. Awesome!

This is one of those songs where the only thing better than blasting it in the car as you're flying down the road is being in a stadium full of fans as they play it live. Keep on rocking, folks - keep on ricking!

Was on 2 week vacation, and just getting caught up… Add the movie Detroit Rock City to your movie watching list… it shows how beloved Kiss was in the late 70s, and how some of the parents reacted. It’s a must watch! Thanks for this reaction!
