Strutter!!!!!! I like your point on the guitar solo, Alex. It is meant to continue the "ride" of the song. In grammar school, I remember all my friends talking about KISS' upcoming appearance on Paul Lynde's Halloween Special. That was a big deal because, without cable TV, we only saw bands on Don Kirshner's Midnight Special, etc. Younger teens couldn't see much early in the evening. KISS lip synched Detroit Rock City, but also did a 5 minute Q&A with Paul (in another vid on YT). Margaret Hamilton (Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch) also appeared. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ma6FtZR7k83af9o.html And I anxiously await your once a month egg nog drunken reaction to Trapeze's Medusa!

Kiss was one of the first bands to do a show spectacle with lots of pyrotechnics, flames, costumes and sets. Yes, the music was simple, but you knew you were going to be entertained when you went to their show.

I see a lot of comments of people calling KISS clowns, couldn't play, saying RUSH wrote better lyrics. KISS has always been about simple raw rock and roll. They ain't RUSH. KISS plays bangers, and they have been doing it since 1973.

The big problem with this track is simply this: it's an abbreviated version, not the original full length opening track on the album "Destroyer." It has an introduction that's been deleted and the transition to the next track has been removed. It adds a bit more to the song, especially since it was about the death of a fan outside one of their concerts. Hit by a car. This album debuted in 1976 when I was a 19 year old rocker, and the Kiss phenomenon was just taking off. I remember going to the county fair on a date and saw four younger teen dudes dressed as Kiss, well as best as they could, and they had the older adults and senior citizens in an uproar. Thought they were satanic. My recommendations would be "Love Gun," or "Hotter Than Hell."

They said that there were so many wrong chords and notes and bad harmonies that re-recording was their only option. Then again I am old and my memory isn't as sharp as it used to be so maybe I got some of this wrong.

@J D to the Army K.I.S.S. was know to stand for Kings In Satan's Service,, we were all told by all adults that heavy rock, or most rock, was the devils music, so we knew it. Truth be told, ass kicking rock is good ass kicking rock,,, all people are devil worshipers until they face the fact that we are all Duality of Soul, (good and evil) and learn what side of the soul we should try and exercise in humanity. We can look into society today and see a whole lot of problems as people have forgotten this, as it is much easier to blame society then it is to confront your own soul, confront it, then help the side you choose to help. I think even as time went on,, all or most members of KISS went through these lessons as they Unmasked.

Imagine being 10 and discovering THIS! 70s KISS is legion, and while I am sick to death of the song, their first hit Rock n Roll All Nite is their most enduring song.....but temper expectations. You'll hear why it endured but why you could get sick of it. Have to check it out from the ALIVE! version, though. I could go on all day about how great their deep tracks are, but while the track I recommend isn't my fave, it's been in every setlist they've played since 75. Good job, guys....keep rockin'!

Your first reaction to I Was Made for Lovin You was honest and it made me realize that it really was a good song, the prejudice about the "Disco " groove was because at the time, alot of Kiss fans were horrified because rockers were supposed to vilify Disco...the arch-enemy. Founded, only, 4 years prior to DESTROYER's release (and recording for about 2-2.5), this album "broke them" to every rock fan, from 5-50, in 1976. Radio would not play them - you NEVER heard KISS on the radio, back then! ...You should have heard the ORIGINAL version, with the "sound effects"/"movie" intro. and outro!!!!! THAT is the first thing you heard when you dropped he needle on DESTROYER!!!!! ...but it only ramped-up from there! ['King Of The Nighttime World" ..."Flamin' Youth" ...and on!!!!!] -Dude!!!!! I grew up with them loving them as a kid and I still do today decades later (back in the days I was fascinated by the concept of them appearing as some supernatural/alien/demonic beings and nobody knew who was behind those masks, today it's mainly for sentimental reasons), I guess that's the common explanation for most people being KISS fans today, you either grew up with them being omnipresent in the 70s or you never got into them. KISS always defined themselves about their presentation on stage with all the fire and the blood spilling, Ace's guitar catching fire and exploding, Peter's drumkit being lifted up in the air and so on. A KISS concert was like a carnival with rock music. Don't attempt to dive deeper into the lyrics, most of their songs are about sex, partying or heavy drinking, the only great (kind of) KISS lyrics that come to my mind right now are probably the ones for 'Beth'. But if you ignore the lyrics and you're just looking for solid bangers that are not really technically brilliant, just tight and enjoyable I suggest Black Diamond, Sure Know Something, She, 100,000 Years, Creatures of the Night, I Love it Loud, Domino or Strutter.

Saw them live and I remember being so impressed as I watched Paul Stanley give 110%, Gene too in his character, but Paul was more active giving it his all in those heavy heeled shoes and make up, up in a riser above the crowd, doing it for the fans. I just remember thinking how hard he's working full speed ahead at every moment and he wasn't a young man anymore, but it was like watching a rock and roll athlete like someone in shape because they haven't let up. This was in the last decade. He was so professional and you could feel he wanted to give you what you came for.

Nice one lads. Loving your channel and makes me laugh and smile at your discovery of these absolute classic tunes this 54 year old drummer grew up with. This song, Detroit Rock City, was the first song I ever heard in concert as a 13 year old seeing Kiss live and this was the song they opened with. My mind was blown! 💣 This was their Kiss Unmasked tour in 1980. The live version is SOOOOO much better ( and louder 😜) than the album version. Throw in the visuals of the stage show and I was hooked on Kiss from then on. Such a totally unique band. Keep up the great work guys. PS. If you don’t start doing some INXS, I will be pissed! 😡🙏🏻👍😂

You guys nailed it. Kiss was never a great technical band, and often they get criticized for that. That's unfair IMHO, because they never pretended to be something they weren't. They were a party band, and they knew how to write really good, catchy rock songs.

@@indyspotes3310 All the words in the comments section look like a children's book, compared to the list of memorabilia and money brought in from else where besides albums, record deals, appearances/interviews, and shows. As far as pretending to be sexy, at least he tried. Im sure Lemmy Kilmister got laid more than anyone in the comments or watched this video. He's seen more trim than an interior decorator, he's laid more pipe than a than the poor union workers during the winter and Lemmy, rest his soul was one of the ugliest men alive ever ....I also would say that Paul was more than a capable vocalist. And gene gave us something unique with an attitude and a belief behind it. Something David Lee Roth would perfect later on in the next decade . Oh and "Beth" wouldn't sound the same with Steven Tyler singing it. Does't fit man. Jim Morrison was perfect for what he did. Jack bruce? besides being possibly the best to ever pick up a bass, he sounded great, but no where near the enthusiasm and attitude Guess what?? Paul Stanley was better than them both. Kiss is the very definition and amalgamation of the mainstream success and popularity. It's ballsy to take risks by dressing like satanic knight, while your band name is an acronym for "KNIGHTS IN SATAN'S SERVICE"...(and off topic, RUSH is "ROYAL USHERS of SATAN'S HOUSE"....Kiss did that mainstream success probably as good as any band since the Beatles. Where was the dynamic singer or musician in the Beatles? Both became the biggest pop-culture rock crossover despite having the southern US and crazy bible thumpers fighting their every move...Ask anyone who's been to a kiss show...then ask them the concert they that was a better and more fun show....Ask them this if you want. What show did you see that surprised and blew you away to where live concerts after that seemed a little to safe...FOOLS EVERYWHERE... OH and i would've taken Ace Frehly as a guitar player talent wise in a split second. And give Gene his props with those 4 devil strings...But this group had no talent, besides musicians who could play enough to write hit songs better than you're favorite prog band with 4 guitar solos in a song that each are over 1 min......Who's a bigger deal? And i mean historically and financially as well. Oh and influential which was proven again recently...How many albums did "alive", and "Destroyer" , sell compared to the crazy talented and brilliant Steve Ray Vaugn's top two selling albums? Just an example but youre talking about the possible biggest rock band ever from this country, numbers, popularity, MONEY. What band from the states challenged kiss anywhere near that until at least Van Halen, in which two members where born in Europe and not until 78 and still didnt reach those kind of heights. Only argument to me is VH and they ruled the 80s more so, by the time Kiss was literally never the same band and lost their identity until they toured with the paint again at least

"12 O'Clock, I've gotta rock" is an era reflection term of an attitude of the times back in day when it was common place that we all went to rock shows/clubs and even Disco Clubs parting till late, late into the evening .. Drinking age was 18, no harsh DWI laws, no MADD.. You guys don't understand this period (1970's)of time when every band was at the height of there career and on TOUR!.. New Album releases, reading Music magazines to get info on the bands, word of mouth, corresponding fan clubs.. I live here in NY and every major venue is here.. every week and month was another major band in town.. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Alice Copper, Queen, KISS, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones Ted Nugent, RUSH , Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Bad Company, Peter Frampton,The Ramones, Elton John, Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros etc etc etc etc.. A time like no other.. You guys critique the guitar solo of this song but you have to remember this was the style and mood for this period of this era and you have the benefit to hear advancements 40+ years later..

I grew up an hour north of Detroit and was one of lucky ones who saw them at the legendary Cobo Arena in Detroit at the concert where they primarily recorded the 1st Kiss Alive album in 1976. I was 18, and we all knew that these guys weren't virtuosos, but no one fuckin' cared, because they put on an excellent show - they were loud, fire breathing, spitting up faux blood....it realky was awesome. Are they the kind of band you're going to listen to every day? Of course not...but during the day, they were innovative, loud and fun.

This song tells a story. In the first verse it's 9:00 and he's driving around town when his favorite song comes on the radio. In verse two at 10:00 he decides to make the trip to Detroit to see Kiss at midnight. He's been drinking and he floors it because he's not going to be able to make it on time unless he drives 100 miles per hour. In the last verse it's midnight and he gets into a head on collision with a semi doing a hundred on the two lane. So the words do actually fit the song

War machines a good one, plaster casters another great gene song, and he’s good on cold gin tho it was an ace song that he happened to sing.

Kiss is gimmicks, simple songs, nothing all that special musically. But they are the entertainment package. Anyone who has seen them live knows. Performances are amazing to see.
