Favorite KISS memory, in late 1985 I worked in the largest video rental store in Columbia SC. One day a bus pulls up out front and sits there for about 20 mins, then a man gets out and comes in and asks if there are any customers in the store, it was before lunch so, no. He goes to the door of the shop, waves and Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick and Eric Carr step off the bus and come in. They spent the next 45 minutes picking out movies while the man who came in first kept anyone else from coming in. The whole time the owner of the store made a complete ass of himself, he knew these people were famous but did not quite know who they were. Gene asked for some recommendations for a good action movie and the owner compounded his foolishness by recommending the movie "Runaway" which was a popular rental title, Gene took the box, looked at the back and said, "yes a very good movie" as he holds the box next to his face and points to his own picture on the back of the box. It was hard not to laugh at my boss but I somehow managed. Some small talk ensued as my boss negotiated a one week rental fee for the movies and I mentioned that I had been in the nosebleed seats at the Alive II concert in early 1978. As they were leaving Paul asked if I was going to be at the concert that night and I replied yes, in the nosebleed seats again and he said, "nope, not this time" on the way out he stopped and told the guy at the door to fix me up. He followed them to the bus and came back a couple of minutes later with two floor tickets, about five rows from the stage!

Paul felt unappreciated because once KISS became popular he’s the only one who kept a straight mind and had good work ethic... KISS was my very first concert-saw them in 96. My dad took me to see them and I was NOT ready for them!It was the greatest thing I’d ever seen in my 12 years to that point-the pyrotechnics, the theatricality and the atmosphere was on a whole other level.I’ve been to several other concerts over the years since, but nothing comes close to a KISS show with maybe the exception of The Rolling Stones concert I saw in 05.Glad to see you become part of the army. With all the memorabilia they’ve made over the years I’m tempted to get a KISS coffin or KISS pinball machine 🤘🔥

I'm 47 years old now, went to every concert I could whenever they were in NY, NJ, LI area. I have a 21 yr. Old daughter and a 12 yr. Old son both KISS Army just like mama lol. They've been going to KISS concerts since they could walk. Thank you for posting this video, they are truly a GREAT band and gave us so much. You're absolutely correct when you say they sound as good live as they do on a track. Also want to add me and my kids were at the End of the Road Tour concert and it was so special. 45 years of my life following KISS and I'm so proud to say am and will always be (including my kids) KISS FANS. Hopefully people will continue to listen and pass this band and their music onto their children

I would be very interested in seeing you take on two Twisted Sister songs. Both are on the Come Out And Play album. I believe In You and King Of The Fools. Two fantastic lyrical pieces I think you would "feel" more than hear. Also, Billy Joel Goodnight Saigon. It's a song about Viet Nam and is so powerful and real. Everybody's forgetting young Elvis in the '50s (LONG before Hendrix) when network television wouldn't even show the lower half of his body due to his "Gyrating" on-camera... "Long" hair... Black leather pants... There's the early inspiration (or at least the roots) for the artists you're all listing when it comes to white Rock...Chuck Berry was the MASTER of movement in about the same era... Crazy-legs and the duck walk that directly inspired Angus (AC/DC). Before Gene's tongue, there was Elvis' curled lip... I'm not sure that would have got the same reaction from Pink, though. =)

Back in 1977 at age 9 I saw a kiss poster at the grocery store and didn’t know who they were but they looked badass so I begged my mom to buy it for me and then soon after the first ever kiss song I heard was Detroit rock city and it blew my mind that this was the only band with the look and sound that was perfect for me. This performance was at Tokyo’s famous budokan hall where they sold out 7 shows in advance to break the attendance record held by the Beatles. They say Alice Cooper was the original with the makeup and stage effects but then he took a break performing so kiss thought how much more entertaining to have 4 Alice coopers on stage and the rest is kisstory.

In 79' I roadied for the rock/punk band Crimers, we covered a few KISS songs. Our drummer did the Detroit Rock City vocals and naturally sounded like Paul Stanley. Family concerns eventually broke up our band. I later worked with Psycho Toyz who covered RAMONES, Dictators, Dead Boys, ect. Our bass player Karl Fidrych went on the play with Rash of Stabbings and were a mainstay of New England clubs for years. The best of days.

KISS was the first popular band to never show their faces in public without their makeup (at least for their first ten years). Alice Cooper predated them with the use of makeup but he didn't hide his true face when he was off stage. The press in the 1970s was a bit more forgiving and really kind of let them get away with it, whereas today they'd be eaten alive by the Paparazzi and would never be able to pull it off. If you are looking for further suggestions check out the live versions of "She" and "100,000 Years" from the Alive album. At the end of "She" they go into a riff that is one of the purest sources of the original KISS sound, and "100,000 Years" contains a drum solo by Peter Criss that borders on superhuman.

KISS protected their identities for many years, wearing bandanas over their faces and covering their faces with their hands while in public. Even when Gene Simmons (the tongue) dated Cher, no one ever caught his face on camera. They took the makeup off for the first time in 1983, after ~10 years of being anonymous and famous at the same time. You should watch their live version of "I Still Love You", which is a very soulful hard rock ballad.

Great reaction! According to Paul Stanley the song is about a fan who died on way to their concert: Stanley explained that the song is not only about Detroit, but about a KISS fan who died in car crash on his way to a KISS show. Stanley said, “There had been an accident outside of an arena in Charlotte. Someone was killed coming to the concert. I thought, how odd and how striking and the juxtaposition of someone coming to a Kiss concert, which celebrates being alive, to lose your life. That was the twist of "Detroit Rock City." To change it from a song about your amazing city to something much more epic."

KISS was not seen out of their makeup in public for the nearly the first ten years of their career, in that pre internet age. That air of mystery made them feel like superheroes. KISS started with the face paint and costumes just to be outrageous and stand out. So-called "glam" rock was a thing back then, apparently in KISS' hometown of New York particularly,

I was 13 years old in 1975 when I saw KISS on tv for the 1st time on "The Midnight Special", and was of course completely blown away! The first record I ever bought was "KISS: ALIVE!" that same year. They were my first favorite band, that is until I discovered Rush on my 15th birthday, but that's another story... LOL \m/ \m/ Btw, the song "Detroit Rock City" originated on KISS's 1976 studio album "Destroyer". You should give it a listen. Actually, "Destroyer" is considered to be KISS's greatest album, and includes KISS's only #1 hit, "Beth"...Rock on...

Screaming Jay Hawkins was probably the first with the props and makeup. The guy used to appear on stage out of a coffin looking like a witch doctor or shaman. But I would also add artists like David Bowie, Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls that inspired bands like KISS to dress up in costume and makeup. And they in turn inspired artists like Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson and Ghost to continue the tradition.

Nice reaction to watching Kiss. Long before the internet and KZread, I could only dream what it must have been like seeing these guys perform live. I was a fan that was caught in the 80's, yet born in the wrong time to have seen Kiss in their heyday. So, to see film footage on KZread now years later is awesome considering the internet was unheard of in my generation. I got the chance to see the original lineup twice; reunion tour and the farewell tour, both I enjoyed. One thing that made my jaw drop was seeing Ace's guitar smoke and he had another one that had chasing lights as well. It was quite amazing to see in concert I thought, but equally impressive to see them in their prime when they were hitting stardom and watching the old live footage. Thank you so much for posting your reaction to this. Back in my day it was just magazines and word of mouth with the exceptions of two VHS releases; Kiss exposed and another VHS tape that this band produced, the name of the other VHS title escapes my mind at the moment. However, not all newer Kiss fans back in the day had access to a nearby Blockbuster movie rental nor did we own a lot in way of Kiss merchandise, either. I was always appreciative of the second hand Kiss Lps, 8-track cartridge tapes, pinups, and two or three album inserts that I did manage to proudly obtain. I wish I had kept my first Kiss collection from that time, but that never came to be. All the best! And keep posting more videos. :)
