Dick Whistles I love it to be totally honest the only thing I don’t like is the heat it throws off on really hot days but probably not a concern where you live. I think the T120 is perfectly slotted power wise between the Street Twin and the new Speed Twin. I don’t think you’ll ever regret having more torque then you really need! 😉

Great review Dick, My partner has a T100 and loves it. I try and borrow it whenever I can... superb power delivery.. There is only one snag that i can find, chain adjustment!! the exhaust covers (at close range) the chain adjusting screws on the swing arm. Also when your thinking about putting a new front sprocket the clutter under the chain cover has to be seen to be believed.

It's 2023 and I've just seen your review. And, that's a great review. Covered everything and put the bike through it's paces. I'll be picking up my brand new T100 2023 Chrome edition in Cobalt Blue in a few weeks. I've ridden all four Bonnevilles (T100, T120, Street Twins 900 & 1200) and this was, and is my favourite. I'm also 5ft 7" and 28inch inseam and currently riding a CB500F. Looking forward to get going on the T100.

Hi Dick and Fannie! I’m back again enjoying your videos! With gas prices in the States being f#*king insane, I’m once again pondering the probability of learning how to ride a motorcycle. A friend at work own a Honda CTX700, which is an intriguing bit of hardware that I am looking into. Hard to argue with an automatic transmission and 65mpg. I’m thinking my wife might like it for herself, so… The bike for ME is this Triumph T100, hands down! Thanks again for all your previous advice (haven’t forgotten about the Honda Shadow and Yamaha V Star you suggested for tandem riding). Been a couple years, but your bike channel is my absolute FAVORITE!

@@DickWhistles Haven’t ridden anything yet. My wife DEFINITELY wants her own bike. Harley is the only one she mentioned… to which I said they’re very expensive. Realistically, I’m looking Japanese because of value and reliability. It’s a simple choice from my perspective. My boss at Michigan Medicine (U of M Hospital) likes Suzuki, so he added the C50 Boulevard. I’m looking almost exclusively at cruisers. We’d like to travel, so those seem to be an excellent choice. After trying some out, that could change, but I doubt it. I’m thinking Springtime is the closest we’ll come to making that happen. Still love café racers, but I’ve got to research this realistically. I can still dream about multiple bikes, but I’m not presently seeing a need for something bigger than 800-900 cc’s. Thanks for taking the time to respond, Dick. I appreciate the work you both do very much.

Dick - I have this bike - the heated grips and cruise control are fitted - cool add on. The engine in the T100 is a better suited motor to the Bonneville than the 1200 in my opinion. A cog down on the rear sprocket would help on the missing 6th gear and better suit a torquey motor in cruising. I have an Africa Twin Adventure and a R1200 GSA. I rate the Triumph as 1st class in its own area of operational use as I do the other two bikes in theirs. Full marks to Triumph on the design of their T100! Great video mate.

Nice review! Enjoyed your perspectives on the Bonny T100, especially since I rented one about a month ago, on a short trip out to Los Angeles. My personal bike is an FJR1300, and I wanted something distinctly different, for a day up in the canyons north & west of LA. Wanted to share a few impressions of the T100; this is the first time I'd ever ridden a Triumph. Overall? Very pleasant and enjoyable road bike. Let me get this out of the way -- the individual bike I rode had a bad, ineffective rear brake -- I know better than to assume all T100s are this way; it was just a problem with the bike I took out. The single front disk was fine, understanding that this isn't a sport bike set up to do stoppies. This is a splendid and lively bike for in-town and country road riding. Was very curious to see how much vibration the 900cc twin cylinder produced, and it was surprisingly smooth, at least up to about maybe 5,000 rpm. Smooth power delivery too, so it's pretty easy to ride at slow to moderate speeds, with a tight turning circle, as you mentioned. Clutch operation, on my rented bike (roughly 2500 miles on the clock), was delightfully light and smooth, from a stop in-town, and during shifting. But the clutch had an odd quirk, that I never got comfortable with in the few hours I had the bike -- once underway, the clutch's engagement point seemed to change, and require more release than I expected at the lever before it engaged. In super-tight, first-gear turns on mountain roads, the combination of an ineffective rear brake (again, I'm sure THAT was unique to my bike) and the sudden change in clutch engagement made for an attention-grabbing few moments. The gearbox itself was delightfully smooth, shifting up or down, and neutral was easy to find. Handling was nice, with a sense of stability yet -- to me -- NOT a heavy feel at all (I know in your review here, you said it did have a heavy feel). In fact, it seemed quite flick-able, even though perhaps a touch top-heavy. Keep in mind, I'm comparing this, in my mind, to a 650-lb. (295kg) Yamaha FJR1300, which certainly feels heavier and has more overwhelming straight-line stability. There unfortunately were really strong, gusty winds in SoCal the day I had it out, gusting to about 30mph (48km/hour), and those did definitely upset the Bonneville, pushing it around within my lane on the road. Disconcerting, but not dangerous. It did make freeway riding a chore, with the combination of wind blast at 70-80mph speeds, and the sudden gusts. Mirrors were OK; nothing special, and did begin to vibrate at around 3,000rpm. Gearing was pleasantly tall, on the 900cc engine -- with the 5-speed gearbox in 5th, 70mph was indeed about 3,800 rpm. That's only slightly faster revs than my FJR, which of course is a 1300cc engine, with a 9,000 redline. Further underlines the T100 engine's relaxed character. Gas mileage during my roughly 120 mile ride came to a bit under 50mpg. Good, but not insanely good, when I consider that my much larger (and more powerful) FJR normally gets in the mid-40s, or more on the highway. What didn't I like? I already mentioned the two-faced clutch operation (superbly light and easy pulling away from a stop and during ordinary shifting, but enough of a change in engagement point when moving that it was disconcerting). Finding the side-stand and getting it down at a stop required more attention than I expected. An initial push on its little extending tab would start to move the stand down, but the spring wouldn't help bring it to its down position -- I had to push it with my foot essentially all the way to its open position, to park the bike. And the gas cap is an acquired taste -- the combination of key-locking and twisting it to remove it was a pain, and (to me) wasn't quickly intuitive. A stylish flip-up cap, perhaps disguised to look like a classic screw-in type, would (IMO) be preferable. Bottom line? Buy this bike for the right reasons, and it'll delight you. It's a nice experience for non-competitive riding, with a classic vibe to its looks and operation. Sure, it's not super-sophisticated in terms of things like suspension or high-rpm engine power, but there are lots of times I'd trade my FJR when I"m stuck in traffic for one of these! If you like the sort of Harley-Davidson type riding experience, enjoying the ride more so than enjoying the sporting performance, the T100 and its 1200cc stablemate, the Triumph Bonneville T120, deserve a look. Thanks for your time!

Good review! I'm pretty keen on t100 or t120, however apprehensive due to tubed tyres which would make roadside tyre repair impossible, corrosion issues that seem crop up here and there and the gearbox failures, which result in bikes getting stuck in gear, that I've been hearing about lately. It is a gorgeous bike as you said though and I definitely agree - calling a 900 small is just wrong. On normal roads and under normal conditions, anything 300cc and above is sufficient. 500cc and above is plenty. I've got an XSR900 and the power/torque on this is beastly. So beastly, that I usually use around 25% of the power band under normal riding. Ideally I would have both, sadly $$ does not agree.

I'm interested in the bike also but apprehensive due to all the things you just mentioned. There was a 2018 T100 on cycle trader that the father was storing for his son that moved away, and the chrome was pitting, the Aluminum was tarnishing. Not sure if the bike was put away without it being waxed or they just have bad chrome jobs. Its just hard to tell if the problem is wide spread or just a few bad apples.

@@DickWhistles The T120 is the most enjoyable bike I've ridden. In my eyes, the perfect blend of mechanical character and refinement. Never buzzy. Lovely sound without setting off all the car alarms in the neighborhood. Comfortable for long rides while also sporty enough to pick up the pace when that perfect stretch of road presents itself. I've heard the T100 is plenty for riding solo, but just prefer the extra torque/hp (and twin front discs), even at the expense of weight (though very well balanced). Only shortcomings are zero wind protection for high-speed highway touring and suboptimal agility and ground clearance for truly aggressive corner carving. That's what a second bike is for.

I have a 2018 T120 and a 2009 T100. Love them both. The T100 definitely has a lighter feel than the T120, but less grunt. If you like relaxed riding and don't ride freeways at 65+ mph, the T100 is great. If you do ride freeways at speed, or if like me you like to blast up to speed just for fun, then the T120 would be better. But in the end, both are really nice bikes with nice ergonomics for the older or more traditional rider because of their upright riding position, and the vintage styling is really pleasing. If I had to get rid of one it would be like choosing which child to put up for adoption - a really hard choice.

Also, did if feel nice and planted at those high speeds, like you'd be OK on shortish range touring commuting, ie, for NYC going upstate? Lastly, can't recall if you've rode the Guzzi V7. If so, comparison? Cheers.

DirectorLJ interestingly enough, I rode the T100 again with my wife as she was looking at it. Check out my video, “She Said, He Said” Episode One. Watch the whole thing, as Fannie gets the hang of the electronic throttle. Your upstate rides, would you go up 87 or old 17? How far do you ride upstate, Adirondacks? West to the Finger Lakes or more “upstate” as in downstate, Westchester and Orange Counties? It would probably get tiring going many hours up the Northway, but on the slower country routes it would be a blast. I can’t remember the vibes being too bothersome (just present), and he way it is tuned you don’t miss the sixth gear as much as you do on the 2019 Street Twin (Scrambler). It’s a perfect commuter/Sunday rider. You could definitely do light touring on it. You’d just need to be patient and open to more frequent stops to stretch the legs and fill up (not a huge capacity tank). I did ride the V7, check out that video. “It’s not Sheet Metal It’s Muscle” I wouldn’t think about touring or doing long rides on the V7. Hope that helps a little. Drop a note when you decide. Ride safe.

chris barrett I’ll start by saying, I never buy a bike considering resale value. The T100 will retain the most value of the ones you’ve mentioned. Followed by the Suzuki and the RE. Being 15 years old the Yamaha is at bargain basement prices and you should own it until it dies. If you were comparing a new FZ6, than the RE would be the least valuable at resale. No one sells their Suzuki SV so you could command a good relative price, but the Triumph would still command more money (percentage wise though the Suzuki could make more money at resale than the Triumph). Thanks for the comment.

Dick Whistles Thanks! Yeah, I’m just looking for reasons to buy yet another motorcycle and since about 1966 I’ve wanted a Bonneville, just because they are so conceptually perfect I think. In that respect I think the T100 make Bonneville more sense, the T120s, especially the speed twin, are cool but the 120s stretch the whole, “through a leg over and ride around, pretty fast if you want, but maybe not”, concept these bikes embody to me. Plus the 120s get sort of expensive for the type in my opinion. RE650s too; but really, they’re not the same yet. Great channel, thanks for your channel!

Low miles for an '06. I like bikes with low miles, but for some it's a red herring for possible issues. I like the carbed 865s. $3000usd is a good price for any motorcycle these days as long as its running and doesn't have any lingering issues. I'd have a mechanic look it over. If you can't check the oil for colour and consistency, have a look in the gas tank for rust or foul smells. Check the idle when its running and turn the idle screw on the carb and see what happens when you starve it to see how rough it gets and how open it is to begin with. Look to see if the tires are cracked or perished. An '06 Bonnie will have a lot of rust, check around the spokes on the rims. Let me know if you pick it up. What colour?

dry509 for the money and the reliability, I’d go SV650 every day of the week. If you are not adverse to buying used, and you’re not looking for a modern retro, (I assume since you asked about the GS) get a 2005 Yamaha FZ6 for a couple of grand and ride it until it dies. Best bike I’ve ever owned (still own it...) I have a lot of bikes. My daily rider is a Royal Enfield Classic 500 (not an option for you if you want lots of highway miles). The Triumph is good, but not worth the money. If it was the same money as the SV, I’d but a Triumph. But for $3000+ more, the SV is a superior bike (actually for the same money, it’s probably superior). Look at the X version of you like modern retro styling. Spoiler (I just bought a Triumph, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find how why... I will say, however, if I did not own the FZ6 and the GS, I would have purchased the SV over the Triumph. Bhavinder Jassar that’s a good question. It is tame for a 900, but I would not characterise it as a “beginner” bike. Truly, the difference in the 1200 and 900 is obviously 300 CC's, but as for performance, a 900 will hit 100 or more mph, like the 1200, it just takes longer to get there. Also, the 1200 will go higher. And come on, obviously the 6th gear will definitely lower the rpms even at higher speeds.

karlosh I don’t always think riders need to be flat footed (unless they are new riders). My GS is taller than my inseam, and I’m very comfortable on it. American riders “learn” to put two feet down when stopped. European riders put one foot down and that is extremely forgiving on taller bikes. If ground clearance is an issue, than you need a taller bike. If you primarily ride on the road, then I agree, there is no reason to compromise on fit. Thanks for the comment.

BTW I have a T120 and LOVE it. Used to have a 2001 Kawasaki W650. Loved it as well - I chose it over the Bonneville T100 of that year, a much better Bonnie than the Triumph! But the new Bonnies are SO much better. I would have gone with the T100 if I hadn't already had the W650. I was wanting a pretty significant increase in power, and the T120 definitely has it.

BobHunter1977 nice. I felt uneasy on the T120. Didn’t feel comfortable with the frame and geometry with the increased power. Thanks again for the comments.

Aside from the cheap looking pinch-weld tank, aesthetically, the bike works. As with all examples of this genre, the question that springs to my mind is: When is a bike “retro” and when is it simply obsolete?

If they redesign the fuel tank without that ugly pinch seam, the bike would look a 1000 Times better.

@@DickWhistles You were easy to understand is what I meant. Unfortunate the T100 doesn't include the upgrades, aside from the motor, of the T-120. Adding them individually isn't smart money. Maybe that 1200 motor is just too much for the frame whereas the 900 is the sweet spot.

I might also mention that the last comment I got on this video was complaining that I was tearing around country lanes on this bike... Good thing, I don’t care about any of it.
