2017 Triumph Bonneville T100 Review

Ойын-сауық

This my initial review of the 2017 Triumph Bonneville T100 - the newest of the Bonneville range with all the style and coolness of the T120 but with the 900cc "High Torque" engine giving lighter weight and nimbler handling (as well as a cheaper price!). Huge thanks to the guys at the Triumph Factory in Hinckley for letting me borrow the bike for an extended period.....more longer term reviews to follow!
I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-
GoPro HD Hero 4 helmet camera
GoPro Session (4) "B" Camera
Nikon D7100 DSLR for static and video shots with various lenses
Lavalier microphone and sellotape for in helmet audio - £9 from E-Bay
Power Director 8 for the PC (for video editing)
Lavalier microphone for in garage audio - £20 E-Bay
My current motorcyles are:-
Honda CRF250L
Triumph Street Triple R
BMW R1200GS
Ducati 899 Panigale

I test rode one of these yesterday. What a lovely bike. Looks really well made. Smooth low revving motor and lots of information on the digital display. I might have to get one.

Great review TMF and to your usual high standard. On the 21st April this year, I will have been riding bikes on the roads for 40 years and I wish to treat myself; this might be just the ticket. High torque and low in the rev range, perfect for real road riding. Looking forward to regular updates. Have a great weekend 👍🏻 Regards SBK Pete

Great review as usual. I have just ordered mine. My first "big bike" After much deliberation on which bonnie to get I decided this has more than enough power for fun on the roads. Now comes with 64bhp blacked out engine coveres and wheels as standard and a brushed not chrome exhaust. Can't wait. One thing you bring up and I did think in the showroom. The single plastic clock really let some models down. If they changed this to the double clocks on all I think there sales would go up.

TheMissendenFlyer I reckon, although there are a lot of good options available at the moment. My head says that the Tracer 700 would be a sensible choice for my current mix of highway commuting and urban riding, but my heart is saying otherwise - T100, Street Cup, new Ducati Monster 797, Z650???

Wonderful review. The color combination on your test bike is stunning. I'm looking forward to this spring when I can hopefully demo the T100 and the Street Scrambler. I have a 2014 T100 that will be traded in this year on a new T100 or Scrambler. Love the looks of both along with increased torque, ABS & traction control which my 2014 model does not have. Interested to see once you have a crack on the new Scrambler, if your 1st preference will be for a T100 or Scrambler. Keep up the great work!

Torque is so much more fun than horse power. I can understand wanting to wring the throttles neck on the track but like you say in the real world torque is nicer. I have now stopped looking at hp figures, I look now for how much torque and where in the rev range is it.

The T100 is a great little bike but if you are going to go 2 up a lot then the T120 may be a better option. If you are two up less than 50% of the time then personally I'd go with the T100 - nicer handling than the heavier 1200cc to my mind....personal preference though of course, many chaps just like to get the biggest most powerful bike for bragging rights of course!

Excellent review,, good that Triumph have given you a long-term loan for a more in-depth look. I'd be interested to see how you manage the weight, not so much when it's moving but when it isn't. I would have to wheel it down an alley and up over a step to get it into the shed, so perhaps you could include a bit of manual handling in a later update.

I do like the idea of that light Clutch, I think I could manage that with my hand. I also like the Torque in preference to a high revving engine, it looks very good too. I would have to sit on one to try the height, I can't ride with my legs too bent as I am very long in the leg (my legs always been a problem for me with any vehicle, I can assure you long legs are not an advantage) A remember very well how bikes used to be back then, Mrs F and I are planning a trip to Austria on my Honda it was risky riding from Southampton to Brighton then in the hope it won't break down. Many thanks for a great review, look forward to the follow up.

Hi, what is your personal observation of the front braking on these bikes. They all seem to suffer with this not quite there feel. Even the Enfield interceptor has a similar gripe. Is it the because it's a single disc, disc size, 2 pot caliper as opposed to 4 pot.the make and model type. Delivery system? Your opinion would be appreciated.

as the owner of a 60's triumph twin, you've got to be impressed with the styling job Triumph has done. Everything from the headlamp brackets to the clutch and primary covers and the " errrr Red Cap where the spark plug is" are a direct copy from the meriden twins. In my biased view that is nothing to complain about.

I saw one today while the STR was in for it's fettling at Triumph. Much better thing to look at in the metal which seems to be a running theme these days in terms of brochure picture vs real world viewing. Not my cup of tea and dismissed it outright based on pictures but seeing it i definitely appreciated it. About the bar end mirror point. I was relieved of quite a substantial (relatively speaking) amount of money today by Mr Triumph for bar end mirrors for the STR while it was in for service. They look excellent but bugger me, they are useless as a mirror! I was a bit disappointed

I rode one a few months ago. I currently own the previous air cooled version and just had a ride on an original 1970 Bonneville. They all are the same yet very different. I still like mine best. This latest version does everything better...but I think it has also become a bit too smooth if that's possible. Some of the character has gone away but it may only bother codgers like me. Riders of modern bikes won't find it the least bit disagreeable. I'm sure the fans of the Meriden Triumphs had similar thoughts about the air cooled Hinckley.

Enjoyed the ride, thanks! I've owned a T120 for the last several months. Glad to hear that the new T100 is a worthy stable mate. The stock mirrors on both bikes might truly be a bit retro and stalky, but they look like they do for good reasons. With them, you can look back and to the sides without looking down. Those long stalks dampen vibration very nicely. The mirrors themselves are set slightly inboard, and are not the widest points of the bike. Last, at night, your elbows can be used to prevent your being blinded by the headlights of following traffic. Rear view mirrors on bikes are most useful for preventing a merge into an occupied lane, not for looking directly behind. Correct technique is to look while swiveling your head, and then glance into the mirror to confirm that a lane change or merge is safe. FWIW.

I think that I like my T120 better than this one, besides the price is really tempting. But I value a lot a pair of good and strong brakes and in that aspect the T120 is a winner here. I also understand the elimination of the passenger grab rail , the rear looks much more cleaner but in fact I am a fan of that utility and I think, on a modern classic ride like this, it is something to have back there, looks nice to my eyes and is useful. So, another thing that Triumph shorted in the offer. The T120 has cruise control but it should have heated grips and this winter I’ll instal it on mine, it’s important for comfort. Another feature that is important for domestic maintenance for cleaning and chain lubrication, is the central stand, couldn’t see if it is present on this T100 from stock but for me it’s another indispensable asset on a bike as the Bonneville, because it’s just a very practical thing to have. Once more, a very good review on the Bonneville T100. Thank you for that. ✌️✌️

How does the t100 compare with the street twin?

Well it's a much classier machine in terms of the high level of fit and finish - the ride is very similar as far as I can recall although as you've gathered I prefer the T100 by a country mile....

TheMissendenFlyer I see. I have had a test ride on the street twin and the t120, wondered where the t100 slotted in.

Think T120 style with the ride of the Street Twin - best of both bikes!

How do you rate it with the R 9 T?

+John Heaney ....having not ridden an R9T on road tyres, at this point, I much prefer the Triumph in terms of handling and refinement, the BMW comes very close on looks and quality (maybe even exceeds it) but in my opinion the Triumph trumps it (and in this case that's a good thing!).....
