    First thing I'm doing if a car(any car, officer better HOPE I register those red/blues first) neutral and kickstand down, right hand goes straight to my hip. We dont get many bike thefts here but ive personally witnessed two(both were fleeing felons running during community service) and that officers attitude wouldn't fly around here either because everyone carries and everyone's proud in my state. Log truck just ahead of me in the left lane - throws off a wood chip the size of my forearm. It hits the ground and goes under one of the trailers exposed duals, gets launched at me and I see this thing coming directly at me. Like in the movies - you see it all happening in slow motion. I tip my head down just in time as it wacks into the top of my helmet. Had I not ducked it would have hit me square in the face. Oh, and a bumble bee hitting you in the face (open face helmet, no visor) is so much worse than a butterfly. Just sayin.

    One thing I'm always thinking about when approaching an intersection is not just my own line of sight, but also the line of sight of potential left turners I can't see. I assume that if I can't see them, then surely they can't see me either, due to the car just ahead of me to the left. Sometimes if I have enough room to catch the car ahead of me before entering the intersection, I'll actually accelerate so that we can pass through together with me just ahead of their front tire so they can also see me. This way I'm now visible to the left turn lane on the other side along with the much more visible car. It's like using the car in the other lane as an intersection blocker and then when safely through, stop pacing and create some MOE padding again.

    Love this part, focus on being seen by other cars when you're driving in spaces where lots of cars will be. If there's a situation where it's difficult for them to see you, keep your stopping distance and prepare to avoid obstacles. Even on the highway bit earlier, none of the five or six semis I saw on the road saw him at all, he was entirely within their blind spots for 90% of that video, and only fleetingly in them for another 10% As an Australian, seeing that many trucks moving that quickly on a highway that wide is insane to me. You can road trip this country, and you'll see trucks like that all the time of course. But that's the only vehicle you see for the next 10 minutes - 1 hour, very easy to predict for. There are sections of highway that are like this in Aus very close to major cities, but genuinely easier and more fun to avoid them and travel the country by back roads or underused sections of highway (really, "highway", it's often single lane of traffic each way and narrow af)

    15:16 There was an issue with unmarked police vehicles in Colorado a couple years back with people impersonating officers in unmarked vehicles and stealing money from people. and due to that regardless of the state I'm in, I won't pull over. I won't speed up, but I will do my best to keep moving until I'm able to verify if it's a cop or not. Either from calling 911 or being able to determine very specific details on the car itself. But if someone pulled up to me like that, I'd politely ask them to call in another officer. They could follow me, but i won't stop. and will fight back if people try to stop me. I don't trust people and refuse to do so. Too many people will willingly screw over others for their own personal gain

Surprising how easily something will snap and I had Sidi crossfire mx boots - not much can stop a twist fracture, the force has to go somewhere so something is going to break. Luckily here in the UK the air ambulance and all the fixing up is free. But I’m still not walking perfectly and have reduced ankle mobility 9 months on but also pain in foot tendons, , Achilles ie places not seemingly affected due to the fracture. Also as i said on original video, if you dont have license plate mount, dont ride until you do. Around here helmet is mandatory on motorcycle. The people here saying the biker was trying to run from the cop because he "reved" must not frequently try to recover from low speed full lock avoidance out of balance. No idea how tall that rider is but anything shorter than 5'8" and he definitely can't flat foot a 636 to catch it falling over. That officer is lucky he's not paying for new plastics, bars and a wrist or ankle fracture after a civil suit. A missing/improperly displayed/obstructed etc license plate is a non-moving violation, not criminal. And while it's a primary violation in every state i know of it doesn't justify attempting to injure or cause an accident. Don't know what i mean? try it. Roll a bike about 3-5 mph, full lock left as if to avoid a t-bone, and listen to your throttle come up as you trail brake to keep it upright. If he wanted to ditch the cop, he would have long before this intersection. If the cop wanted to pull him over 20 miles ago, he would've made enough space that one traffic light wouldn't have helped... I consider it a courtesy if an officer initiates traffic stop from beside a vehicle towing or riding a motorcycle or any other situation with limited rear visibility. But, I would expect the next step to be that we leave the roadway or at least the path of travel before making contact, with the well lit patrol car blocking traffic, behind us. I would never expect an officer to block me into a path of travel like this one did, especially with a discrete, poorly lit unmarked vehicle in a busy lane of travel. Basically this guy puts both himself and the rider into the lethal triangle by "working" on the traffic side of the patrol car. I likely would have attempted to pull in front of the police vehicle, and make the next available right turn to a side street or a parking entrance. That's still what they tell you to do right?

    At 4:23 mark, in front of the truck-trailer, there's a car merging onto the highway causing the truck to move to the left. The truck driver knows he passed the video bike, checks his mirror and only sees one bike ... then the second bike shoots past the video bike going even faster then the truck. The truck driver checked the left lane, only sees the first bike he passed, looks ahead to see the merging car, moves to the left to let the car on. Nobody expects to have a bike come up hauling faster than anyone else on the road. So who screwed up? The truck driver who wasn't checking his mirror every millisecond or the rider going full tilt?

    I believe you are wrong, if you watch from the beginning the second bike doesn't take off past the biker recording till the truck passed him... seems to me those two were riding together and his buddy in the back thought he would fly up on the guy pulling the trailer and make a scene for flying past them so fast. Since the truck driver was angry enough to pass them the way he did, and then see a biker coming up on him, it's only natural that he continues his road rage by trying to push the bike out of the left lane onto the median. happens all the time in Texas.

    Question for @DanDanTheFireman, so on 13:36 the rider is behind the white pickup in the far-left part of the lane where the semi with the trailer can't see him... would it not make more sense for the rider to stay in the right part of the lane where he is visible to the semi driver? Way back in 2006-2007 when I took my riders safety course, we were taught to stay in the right part of the lane when riding in the passing lane so that if a vehicle is trying to move in, they can see the motorcycle rider more clearly as to reduce the chances of something like that happening. what are your thoughts sir? And also, love your videos, please keep making content, you have saved my life more than a few times at this point with all of your safety talk!

    Just the way I see it - it’s up to you, you rather rely on them checking their mirrors by you being in a better place for them to see you or …. Would you rather be in a better road position to be able to manoeuvre out the way if they start pulling over. If you in left hand side you got more of a safety cushion and have more time to react. I personally would rather rely on my own ability to keep myself save then hoping someone checks their mirror. Because if you on right side and they don’t check. You got less time to do anything about it. Each to their own. Stay safe buddy.

    Good call on that left turner. I wanna be dumb n say speed would've saved him but it would've made it worse if the car was turning sooner. A red stage swerve or a better position on the right would've been best if not slowing down.

    Can I suggest something to add to all your good regular advice? The incident at the roundabout at 2'06", you don't have many of these in US but they blight Europe and UK and maybe worth considering for your audience here. Like your regular 'side of vehicle/open lane pattern', also mention the 'open roundabout pattern'. In this case, car drivers will ignore you if you take a weak position and are on the inside of their road, they see the roundabout is flowing and they are trying to merge. They will be focused on trying to merge with the traffic one side while you are on the other. That's what they do, no point guessing or assuming they can look in two directions at once, they can't look in two directions at once, eyes don't work like that. So, if on a motorbike, be incredibly cautious if you go for the inside line and keep an eye out for traffic behind, get ready just to shoot off in to the roundabout if you need to. Better to take up a commanding position in the center of the road when approaching a roundabout (sometimes it's called 'position 3' here in UK, as if there are 3 mini lanes in each lane). That way, cars will have to see you if they are looking towards the oncoming traffic. Position 3, towards the centre of the road, is usually the safer option in any situation, it aids both your visibility of the road ahead, but increases visibility others have of you considerably, the one exception is in the 'outside' lane of a motorway when in traffic, better to be in position 1 of the outer lane rather than be right up against the central reservation/median, no one can see you there other than in that lane and they think they are going fast so don't bother looking!

    The rules for these stupid things are a little different here. There are at least two in the Portland OR area and there's one that I know of near me. The footage looked to me like it was in the US, and here you're actually meant to stop if there are cars in the roundabout before you merge, you're meant to merge on the end of the line. You're supposed to look both ways two or three times before pulling out. The driver maybe was distracted etc, but he should have definitely been watching in front of him, he had no business trying to merge there.

  • @donaldjames3912

    @donaldjames3912

    9 ай бұрын

    @@kitalalaris It'd be dumb looking both ways two or three times. Traffic flows from one side and you'd look for that. That's the whole point of a roundabout. Like you say, stop if there were cars in the roundabout but there weren't any, the bike stopped when they could have gone. The idea is that you never stop, and try to keep rolling to merge the traffic together. It's funny that you can actually count the number of roundabouts 'in the Portland area', clearly you don't really have them. I was offering advice to EU/UK riders. The number of times it'd be relevant to look the other way would be the number of times a motorcyclist puts themselves in a silly position out of sight of upcoming drivers, to the side (not even ahead), which is basically never but there are some motorcyclists who put themselves in a silly position whether they meant to or not.

  • @kitalalaris

    @@donaldjames3912 I just said the rules are different here, I also said that there were two that I know of, not two exactly, no need to be insulting. For your information the one I personally used most was on the south side outside of Portland out in the middle of farm land where you'd see maybe one car every 4 miles. But yes. We do have them, just not many, whether that's good or bad is up for debate. Them being so unusual though means most Americans have no idea how to use them, you definitely want to look where the traffic is going once anyways if you come up on one here because I've seen people stop right in the entry way while in the actual roundabout for no reason, it's ridiculous. It can be fully clear for them to keep on going and they'll still just hard stop. It's like they get lost and panic because there's no stop sign, apparently people where I currently live don't know what to do with that. I do have to ask though, do they really help with keeping traffic flow constant or is it a case of "yes, but actually no?"

    Hey qq as a new rider what do you do in the event you have a speed wobble? Break? Ride it out??

  • @n.o.b.s.8458

    @n.o.b.s.8458

    9 ай бұрын

    Speed wobbles are pretty rare. Best thing to do is: 1) stay calm, don’t freak out. You can save the bike but you can’t overreact. 2) lay your body down over the tank. Shifting your weight forward helps to put weight on the front tire and regain traction. 3) DO NOT HIT THE BREAKS. It’s very tempting but hitting the breaks will shift most of the weight into the front tire which is probably not pointed straight, that’s not gonna go well. 4) a slight increase in speed can help settle the bike down. Don’t punch it, just a small tweak to keep your momentum moving forward. 5) get your bike fixed immediately. Most of the time a wobble is caused by bad wheel bearings, front suspension issues or with rubber mounted bushings on certain bikes. It’s not a fluke, and it will happen again. Keep your bike in good riding shape and don’t ignore what you feel. With all of that said, I’ve been riding for 5 years on several bikes up to 35 years old and never experienced a speed wobble. However the only accident I had was due to my front tire being very old, and having almost no tread.

  • @ThomasSchratwieser

    @ThomasSchratwieser

    9 ай бұрын

    Don't brake. DO NOT. I ride an older bike, and have had a high-speed wobble once. I rolled off the throttle slowly, which stopped the wobble. I then replaced the tyres and refreshed the suspension to prevent it from happening again. There are some bikes which are more prone to wobbles than others (see: the Harley Electra Glide), and in those cases it's usually an imbalance in the suspension between front and rear, and left and right. Check your tyres and refresh your steering head bearings.

    From what I can see, the bike that jumped into the lane was just a regular bike, just coming in at an angle, but I still agree that the e-bike craze needs to chill. Also, that cop needs to go to remedial training on how to not unnecessarily escalate a situation. The biker was wrong for not having a tag, sure, but that cop was looking for someone's head that day.

    Braking for the more expensive scooters and E bikes hitting speeds up to 50 -70 plus mph usually come standard with hydraulic front and back disc brakes. However, way more weight disposition moving forward with rider on Motorcycles unfortunately. That's like comparing apples to oranges though. Rule of thumb, don't ever be in "red mode" whipping through traffic on an E-bike or scooter like your on a motorcycle cause your not! Two totally different physics, but always the same safety principles of having a way out of crashing and eating shit! 😅
