16:20 -- I live in a building that oversees that bridge. Unfortunately the kid passed away. 21 years old, no license, and was previously seen doing dangerous maneuvers in a road close by. It's a shame, such a waste of life. Who knows what the kid was running away from. No matter how stupid this was, it doesn't make it any less sad. Don't ride angry, don't try to impress or act cool in traffic and public roads. Learn patience, it will save you. His motor oil stains are still there on the road.

hi, i'm the rider at the 5:55 mark. first, i'm a girl. trying to thread that needle was dumb. the video doesn't do it justice, but what i perceived was the car on the right coming to a stop, so i made no effort to swerve back to the left. unfortunately, that wasn't what happened. i did a flip! i remember thinking while i was airborne "shoulda gotten a jacket with armor". you are absolutely right about the injuries. i was conceal carrying iwb appendix at the time. the tank crumpled fine, the firearm not so much, lots of soft tissue damage to the groin. going to the ER that was luckily just down the road, the doctor said they shoul've taken me to a trauma center instead. they hit me with painkillers, gave me an x-ray for my elbow, then gave me a full-body CT scan. that ece 22.06 helmet definitely saved my life. i went home same day, but couldn't walk right for a week and the bike was totaled. as a new and even experienced rider, you're going to have those moments where you think "i can make it", and you need to stop and check that behavior, otherwise, this is about the best-case scenario you can hope for. ride safe.

Stoked to hear you are okay!! Have had some "I can make it" moments in my past to be sure. These days, my attitude is, "I'll make it, where I'm going, no need to push it". That's not to say that we shouldn't have fun or push some limits on two wheels... but there are times and places for it. I am happy to hear you are well and recovered/recovering!

Now I'm on a 390 Duke, and while it's loads more fun, it's sometimes unnerving how slow it is. All those situations where I used to think, "I can make it," I now think about how I most certainly cannot make it. Probably saved my butt at least a couple of times. Do I still plan to get a KTM SDR Evo? Yes, but now I know how to properly handle situations that I would not have learned without riding various bikes with different amounts of power.

@@tsurutom Unfortunately that was either his body going limp or convulsing. I had a friend work ambulance that day. There's no speculation - sad to say, but he passed away. Yet another reason to remember that crashes don't need to be spectacular or at crazy speeds for someone to loose their lives.

For you newer riders; 99.999% of these bad situations can be attributed to TWO factors. Going too damned fast for the road conditions, and not being seen! If you want to run fast, take it to the TRACK. If you have a black helmet, black gear, black bike, then you are effectively INVISIBLE TO ALL TRAFFIC, so don’t get pissed off when no one can see you. Slowing down, and making yourself more visible (you’re not Johnny Cash!), eliminates most of these scenarios.

you cant actually go as fast on the track as you can on the road though, tracks are centered around choosing the best lines and using proper cornering techniques. few tracks have straights long enough that you can even get to the top speed of a 600, not to mention stay there or close to that speed

Thanks for this comment. Safety gear is not safety gear unless it is highly visible. I see so many all black bicyclist and motorcyclist and just shake my head. I too used to wear all black in my 20's but after many near misses am older and wiser and less self conscious these days and proudly wear the visible safety vest.

At the 16 min mark for video, biker is not okay, he died on spot, medics said, that he probably broke his neck. Rider was 23 y.o. and also didn't posses motorcycle license. Original video author needs to do better fact check.

He was speeding way over 70-km/h (official conclusion is that at the time of impact it was 70-80km/h and it is after he tried to break, before that way more) and even did not have a drivers license. Also that place is well known for traffic jams (every business day) at the time he crashed. His crash was the end of two day joyride disregarding every law, speed limit and even common sense. Guys like him give bad rep to all other riders out there. By the way he is not ok. He died by broken neck/spine the moment he smashed rear window with helmet

I was in the Latvian news (my wife is from Latvia), this happened in Riga. Greetings, Steve (From the Netherlands, in 2 months we will take our bikes to Latvia to visit my wife`s family).

Still trying to figure out how the guy outside of the gym crashed. Looked like he literally just decided to lay down for no reason 😂

@@organicgrow4440 Going through an intersection, I lost the front tire on some gravel and ate the pavement for 42 feet. The bike (2022 Harley XL1200X) is likely a total loss and I have stage 2 and 3 road rash on all my appendages, along with a sprained ankle where the bike landed on me. Replaying it through in my head over and over, and the fact my bike was in neutral, I believe I hit neutral when downshifting to first which unloaded my front end, reducing grip. No abs on the bike, either. I should have been paying more attention to the road surface.

I’ve done a bit of crash upshifting, generally from 3rd, just a little pressure under the shifter, and just for a moment drop the throttle, the shifter clicks up, and roll on again. Down shifting is similar, just pressure on the shifter, and unload the throttle, it should pop down. I don’t know how quick shifters or slipper clutches might change this though. Anyone experience this on a newer bike?

I've got an old honda shadow (86) And Idk if I just mess up the timing or am not pulling hard enough but can't ever seem to get a clutchless shift to work.

There are too many bikers in your videos that think they own the roads and get angry at car users for petty reasons. Then they put on this act even though they were a mile away from any potential crash and had half an hour to avoid it. Doing all this head shaking and revving their bike.... Like get over yourselves, you're knobs. All the time I have cars not see me and pull out, you know what I've done? I've learned that every time there is a junction, to be prepared and slow it down. It doesn't take a genius to avoid most of these crashes :/ I do not get sports bike riders either as they're always trying to act like they're in MotoGP on the road.... Like guys this isn't a track and you do not have warm slicks on and you have a thin lane, you're not going to be able to ride like you can on a track.... So do a trackday and spare everyone else from your idiocy.

On the Fortnine video: I got knocked off my bike at 30mph, landed on my shoulder, slammed my knee and knocked myself out momentarily (someone hit the kill switch but I thought I just stood up straight away) while in full armour. The only bruise was below the kneepad where I guess the bottom of the pad stabbed in. I rode the bike 2,400 miles in four days after that hit. I did not even know I had landed on my shoulder until I looked at the jacket three days later. Keep the armour in guys. Bones and muscle can mend, joints- not so much.

I think what happened in the first video is that the biker stopped for the cross walk but the guy behind him expected the biker to keep going so he checked the other way to see if it was clear and then hit the bike in front of him. This happens at yield spots a lot because people are more worried about checking to see if they can go than watching the car in front of them. Always focus on where you’re going.

Intersections in the USA are absolutely bonkers. Here in The Netherlands all intersections are designed in a way that no other vehicles are potentially going to cross your lane. So either they have a red light or a separate lane for turning on the intersection. In the USA it seems like free-for-all :')

Totally agreed on the armor bit. Breaking a bone is breaking a bone, but that extra energy (beyond what it takes to break the bone) has to go somewhere. It always helps to remove at least some energy from that impact. Fortnine is absolutely correct, and their goal with their video was the same as their helmet rating video: not to convince people to stop wearing armor, but rather to shed light on the fact the armor ratings are very outdated and don't reflect 20+ years of accident data.

@10:00 of course you can downshift. Blip the throttle. Probably can't get all the way to 1 but should be able to get to 3, maybe 2. Then when you're down to like 20 MPH, hit the engine kill switch and coast down.

The guy in the white SUV didn't turn his head till after he started to get over. This is very common and something to really watch for when riding. If they don't see you they will hit you.

I just started riding again after 20 years. I forgot how severe the attraction is that animals have to motorcycles. 2nd day out and had a lab/shepard mix come out into the middle of the road and try to attack my front tire. Couple days later I was riding out in Amish country at dusk and all within 2 miles I had a deer in the other lane that came out of the woods just staring at me, then a racoon, then a fox and countless squirrels. Squirrels are VERY fascinated with motorcycles. They come out to the middle of the road, stare at u until you're about 10 ft away then run off. Squirrels and dogs man.

When buddies clutch lever came off, and you said to rev match... Don't you still need the clutch to rev match? With no clutch, you could put pressure on the shift lever, let off the throttle, and it'll pop down... But no clutch and your rev's will shoot up and you might lock the rear wheel, no? I think I would just gently slow down, until it stalled out. Not sure if that's the best, fairly new rider myself..

You can indeed downshift without a clutch very easily! I'm a beginner and I can downshift with no clutch by rev matching!

"We can't downshift" is a great way to say that you can't do anything... Let's encourage better and more comprehensive training and practice as opposed to handing out "bike cards" to anyone who passes a course and let them rip it at 100+mph. The biggest thing regarding competency in motorcycle riding is time and experience. Many riders who have the common issues here are new or only have experience on their new sport bikes. It's awesome to have the freedom and power... but from a 90-100mph high-sider.... take this advise... practice the drills regularly, learn your bike, take it easy, and stop trying to be the fastest, coolest idiot on the block. I love DanDanTheFireman, and my ONLY criticism is that the statements that are intended to be snarky or sarcastic, are easily interpreted as encouragement for the younger or less experienced riders. Perhaps run the script past a few folks who have had traumatic incidents, or those who have ridden from youth to older age and various environments. That all said, you are doing good work and your offerings are excellent and very, very worthwhile. Love what you do, keep it up!

Almost (almost) all of the crashes are the result of going too fast for road conditions (traffic, weather, debris). I have ridden full time in L.A., Dallas; oklahoma. Excess speed kills.

I personally like to keep my phone in my jacket pocket incase something happens.. if me and the bike get seperated, I still have my phone to call for help...

Usually almost no one has common sense when they are driving, you need to learn to understand that when you drive or ride. On the road everything literally can happen, when i say everything is everything. You will see people crossing the road inmerse on their phones, drivers who forget how to use the mirrors, bicycle users who believe they own the road, etc, so be really careful. Use bright colors, always, keep your bike lights on and understand you are the chasis and keep the bike in perfect conditions.

it's not an open lane if someone is there.

You can downshift without a clutch. I upshift and downshift without my clutch on my gsxr for 60,000 miles. No quickshifter. You can do the same thing a quickshifter does by blipping the throttle. Cuz that's all a quickshifter does. It just cuts the ignition instead of throttle. But either way it's still shifting the same. Sport bike transmission is designed to be shifted without the clutch.

But the best way to learn the technique and try on different bikes is to............pull up on the shifter as your accelerating with the throttle on. Don't pull hard to break anything just pull up nice and firm.. then.......when you are ready to shift just snap the throttle closed and back open again. The faster and smoother you snap the throttle closed then open the faster n smoother your shift will be. With practice it sounds and feels just like a quick shifter.

It's the sudden close and open of the throttle that unloads the transmission enough for the gear to slip in. As long as your holding pressure up on the shifter. All you gotta do is snap the throttle closed and open when you wanna shift.

I am not a fan of phone mounts as it encourages phone use. I rather pair my PackTalk with my phone and only use it to make calls when I absolutely have to. Phone stays in my jacket.

1:02 Bennetts Bikesocial did a full rebuttal on Fortnine's video about amror being "useless", including getting into contact with people who did research on motorcycle injuries and said Fortnine misrepresented their data, so they are in fact not right. Plus as you've already starting to notice Fortnine oversimplified how motorcycle injuries occur because he took only one aspect - which is at at what force does human bones breaks - and painted that as the be all and end all criteria, when complicated things like if the bone breaks clean or is shattered into dozens of piece and can't be put back etc is actually very relevant too. tl;dr Fortnine's video is poorly researched and argued and nobody should take them seriously again - at least not until they get their shit back together and don't use psesudoscience to mislead people.

fortnines video was released on april 1st - it was a joke. The deadpan delivery though got a lot of people to do a response and raise awareness of how you can use facts to make stupid arguments.
