Is Xylitol Safe?

Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used in many products from chewing gum to protein powders. Unlike artificial sweeteners, xylitol does not have toxic break down products, and is generally well tolerated.
In animals, especially dogs, xylitol can be very dangerous as it may trigger the secretion of insulin, dropping blood sugars to dangerous levels. In humans this is not the case.
We should still use even naturally occurring sweeteners in moderation only. We are not meant to consume huge amounts of these.
We also have to keep in mind that sugar alcohols do have some caloric value. In general, I recommend to count them as 1/2 carb, so 10g xylitol = 5g carbs.

    Thank you!! Erythritol is OK to be used in moderation in my opinion. There was some controversy because of correlational data with people that had heart disease. However, it was never established whether erythritol is a protective factor or just a correlation or a negative factor. Data from Japan shows no increase in heart disease after the introduction of erythritol.

    I like what AudryGregis said in the response to xylitol about Sally Norton saying it doesn't create much oxilate in the body. I'd probably go with Xylitol before erythritol because the findings are 'inconclusive'. IMO more like illusive! I've decided it's a no for me and I won't suggest anyone take erythritol anymore as a sweetener because if it can affect a healthy person by 90% in regards to clotting, then I'd think it's best to be avoided until more research is done. I love Japan and the example they give for health! If people in America thought Natto tasted good like they do we'd probably still be healthy even with the introduction of erythritol for a good thirty years ahead!! 😊

Because I have a dog and need to use xylitol for biofilms and dry mouth and sinus problems... but I’m paranoid about my dog getting into it. Can you reassess this post recent study. They used 30g similar to the erythritol study and also the same group that conducted that study. Typical piece of xylol gum has 1 g per piece. How much do you absorb from gum is it 100%? What are your thoughts?

  • @JonasKuehneMD

    @JonasKuehneMD

    19 күн бұрын

    The absorption and metabolism is not clear. One study found: “Xylitol, on the other hand, was poorly absorbed in the present study. This contrasts with results showing absorption of at least 50% in healthy subjects [14]. In contrast, the previous study used a test solution consisting of xylitol with an equal amount of glucose, which is different from the current design. The addition of glucose might have affected the absorption of xylitol. Moreover, the authors estimated absorption by aspiration and analysis of ileal content (i.e., disappearance); of note, they did not find any xylitol in plasma samples one and two hours after ingestion [14].”

    Thank you!! I agree😁. Xylitol may be beneficial for lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.From www.scirp.org/journal/journalarticles.aspx?journalid=2435 “Xylitol mice had also showed the lowest total cholesterol level (4.20 ± 0.90, p = 0.000) than the other groups, but highest in HDL level (2.72 ± 0.14, p = 0.000). In conclusion, these findings proved that xylitol has the potential to reduce body weight, lowering the blood glucose but yet increase the HDL level.”

    In one study xylitol has shown to increase platelet aggregation shortly after consumption, and thereby risk of a blood clot. This will greatly depend on the amount of xylitol ingested, and some other perimeters. There is also natural xylitol occurring in our blood. It is also found in small amounts in fruit and other nutrients that we consume from nature. Out of caution, I would suggest to decrease the consumption xylitol but we do not currently know what safe levels are.

    I recently watched Dr. Eric Berg here on YT mentioned that it's high in oxilates

  • @audreygregis8721

    @audreygregis8721

    Sally Norton, the oxalate queen, who published her book "Toxic Superfoods" would be a much better person to listen to. From her book, "Note that while the toxicity of xylitol infusions has led to discontinuation of their use, the limited available research suggests that dietary xylitol does not create much oxalate in the body." Xylitol is fabulous for teeth. If there was that much oxalate in dietary oxalate, it wouldn't be good for teeth, as oxalates love attaching to teeth for the calcium. I'm a prime example of that. The funny thing, Dr. Berg did a video a year ago that chewing xylitol gum was good to remove tartar. This is why I don't care for him. I learned from Sally Norton, tartar is oxalates. So why is Berg saying xylitol is high in oxalates, yet good for teeth?
