Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that it's because it's on a subordinate clause. When it's the case, the main verb goes to the end (I'm new to Dutch, but something analogous happens in German). Bijvoorbeeld: Ik heb een vriendin. Of Ik ben gelukkig, omdat ik een vriendin heb. Doei!

  • @brucenator

1:17 Om te zeggen in welk jaar je geboren bent... I'm not a native Dutch speaker, but I've been studying Dutch and Dutch grammar for quite some time now. I think you're on the right track, but I also think the grammar is more complicated than that. There's a lot of grammar packed into this one clause. Some of this you may already know, but I'll try to break down my understanding of the grammar. Common word order: Ik ben geboren in Nederland. Ik ben geboren in Nijmegen. Ik ben geboren in 1990. The question would be phrased: In welk jaar ben je geboren? When the subject+verb (je bent) comes at the beginning of a question, it is always inverted (ben je), but that is not the only reason for inversion. The subject+verb is also inverted whenever the subject+verb is preceded by a word, phrase or clause other than a coordinating conjunction or interjection, _regardless of whether it is a question or not_ . In this case it is a question, but inversion occurs because the subject+verb is preceded by the prepositional phrase 'in welk jaar.' Another example of inversion is in the continuation of this sentence, 'je kunt' is inverted to 'kun je' not because it's a question (which it's not) but because it's preceded by the clause "Om te zeggen in welk jaar je geboren bent." 'Kun je' is also a choice. Many native Dutch speakers prefer 'je kan' and 'kan je' over 'je kunt' and 'kun je.' Om dit te zeggen, kan je dit zeggen. Additional grammar: many verbs with je/jij drop the *t* when inverted, namely when the verb form ends in a double consonant: je hebt > heb je; je wordt > word je; je kent > ken je; je verkoopt > verkoop je, etc., etc. Here, the entire question is used as the direct object. If you're having trouble as to why it's the direct object, just think of that entire phrase as 'dit'. In welk jaar ben je geboren? Weet je dit? Weet je in welk jaar je geboren bent? (I'll get to 'om te zeggen in a minute.) When you're using the question (In welk jaar ben je geboren?) as the direct object (in welk jaar je geboren bent), then _prescriptively_ the verb (bent) should always come at the end (Weet je dit? Weet je in welk jaar je geboren bent?) Geboren is a centuries-old form of a verb that has otherwise fallen out of use, so it is actually technically considered to be an *adjective* and is used as part of compound adjectives such as blindgeboren or eerstgeboren. So _prescriptively_ when the verb goes to the end, the adjective should come before it. But _descriptively_ "je bent geboren" is still thought of in the same way as the present perfect form of the verb (voltooid tegenwoordige tijd), so some native Dutch speakers may choose either word order (geboren bent or bent geboren) when this combination comes at the end. In this case, it's not only a dependent clause, but a beknopte bijzin (a dependent clause without a subject). With 'om te zeggen,' *om te* makes it subjectless. "Om dit te zeggen..." = "To say this..." But who is doing the saying? The subject isn't specified, so it's a clause without a subject (beknopte bijzin). It takes the place of a dependent clause that has a subject, such as "Als *je* dit wilt zeggen..." Again, when using the question as a direct object, think of the entire phrase (in welk jaar je geboren bent) as *dit* . The word order is different, but grammatically it's the same: Om dit te zeggen... To say this... Om te zeggen in welk jaar je geboren bent... To say what year you were born in... There's also grammar explaining why you should use _welk_ instead of _wat_ , but that's a whole other chapter. Hope this helps!

I find the prominence of very wordy terms in Dutch for basic, widespread grammatical concepts like "adjective" (bijvoeglijk naamword) and "verb" (werkwoord) to be quite tiresome and an eyesore. Why not just use the simpler terms like in most other European languages? Even German with its notorious emphasis on explicitness and Handschuh-words uses universal terms.
