Thank God Hulu picked The Orville series up for another season after FOX didn't want to do a 3rd Season. This Star Trek parody is actually better then some Star Trek shows, and you can tell MacFarlane and his crew love making it, probably more so then he is about Family Guy these days.

This is ABSOLUTELY the Star Trek show that the various licencees of Star Trek have failed to deliver. Between the Jar Jar Abrams' abominations and the absolute dreck of Discovery and Picard, The Orville is the ONLY worthy successor to Star Trek. This show needs many, many more seasons.

It's not a parody. They don't try to make fun of Star Trek. They use the same tropes, to the point where it's basically a rip-off, but they do it with respect and come up with even better quality than the original. The comedic moments are there, of course, and they are on purpose, but this is not enough to call it a parody.

I think that's the key to what makes an actually good story: The politics and pressing contemporary issues are present, but you're not told what to think about them or how to take them. You're given the situation, the characters and the reason why each character thinks how they do. The story provides the material, the audience takes different things away from it and has the discussion.

I felt Bortus in this episode but man, Klyden got me. With Klyden being a traditionalist and also someone who was altered, there must have been a lot of self hatred and confusion that he had to battle with. He's a proud Makklan and he's instilled that into his child but how does one separate "being Makklan" and "being Male". Topa, who knew the consequences of their decision, still wanted to be female. Klyden must feel that that is a rejection of his culture but also of him as he is happy in his gender; maybe the writers will touch on that in a future episode. Maybe Klyden isn't as happy with himself and had questions through out his life; maybe there is a sexism/stigma towards those born female and seeing Topa's acceptance is confusing. Klyden has always been a bit of the outsider on the Orville and it would be lovely to see a Klyden POV episode in the future. So many layers and such amazing writing; I don't want this series to end!!

  • @jackanarchy99

Klyden comes from a place of self loathing. Having been told his entire life that males were superior and females were inferior, and knowing he was born female just made him hate himself so much more. That being said, it does not excuse his entitled, sexist and racist beliefs. The guy was a Karen through and through, which I believe Klyden was a play on that.

  • @eventingirl001

@@jackanarchy99 I’m not saying that it excuses his behavior; I’m glad the writers didn’t make Klyden one dimensional in portraying that side of the argument. It wasn’t “just because”, the emotional pain is understandable and sad but inexcusable nonetheless. I hope that he gets an arc to accept his gender (whatever that could be) and his child’s gender.

  • @superexoticshrub

I don't think Klyden was truly happy. He made a comment that "Topa may never be happy, but happiness is better than despair." I think that was Klyden basically admitting that he's not really happy about it. But it's a kind of sunk cost for him at this point. To admit that he shouldn't have been changed would invalidate his entire life. We see that kind of 'digging in' a lot with points of view that are, if not necessarily religious, at least as dogmatic as religion can be. Invalidation causes a defensive reaction. People who fall for doomsday predictions, for example, often don't break out of it when the prediction fails. They irrationally become *more* convinced. My guess is that Klyden does have the self-loathing Lewynd mentioned and has buried it by embracing tradition to convince himself that it was right and that he wasn't living a lie.

  • @Loisdz8zh

Hopefully, the Orville will touch up on this if they decide to bring Klyden back. Even if he doesn't change his mind altogether or at all, they should at least address this. After reading your comment, I never really thought of it that way. Of course, I can't forgive him for telling his own daughter that he wished she was never born. But the show should try to get deeper into Klyden's views and answer the question of "why?"

  • @vandalg282

    @vandalg282

To be fair, no one sees the other side. What if Klyden was completely okay with it all? No confusion, no self hatred, but instead, love and pride for his culture, traditions and upbringing. Klyden loves being Klyden, he enjoys being male, he doesn't regret who he is, merely that he remembers. But pride and honor matter above all else. I get it, in a word as castrated as it is currently, the opinion is seen as sexist, however, its an entirely sexist origin of said species. Who are we to impart our human views? Which was the storyline through and through, it changes of course when Topa agrees, however Klyden isn't wrong. She will be shunned, and life will be difficult her, especially since she can't go back to her home world and she's weaker than the males.

The fact that Haveena and her colony exist is proof that humans are NOT the ones pushing their views on anyone. The moclan government is. Haveen is older than Bortus or Topa or anyone else on that ship basically and her parents believed way back then that it was wrong to alter her. So that sentiment existed long before the Orville crew. There are other females on the colony who are older than Topa(as they are adults) proving that there were more in hiding(or more who un did the procedure) and there are males fleeing their planet to get to the colony in order to protect their daughters. All of this proves that it is not an issue of human moral intervention on a species that is different. Its a conflict the Moclans have been dealing with for generations. Topa and Haveen just gave them the courage to fight for their existance.

This episode was great, but even better was when Klyden finally returns and apologizes, saying "The last time I saw you, I said some very hurtful words. Topa responds, "I Understand, Its okay. And I had tears when Klyden responded, "No, it is not." Because its true. Its obvious Klyden loves Topa, always has, but stuck in his ways could not accept his daughter. But in the end, he came back. But still acknowledges it is not. A nice touch is at the end when Klyden invites Kelly to dinner. Season 3 is a master class in story telling, and Paramount should take notice. Orville is not Woke, its just the fact that the characters and stories have real emotional weight to them even if the setting is futuristic SciFi.

@@pavelstaravoitau7106 Orville is most definitely not woke. Star Trek often highlights societal flaws via satire, or by reframing a race as a different species to make the viewer examine an issue from a different angle. But woke is something completely different. Pay close attention to Klydens motivations based on his dialogue. Klyden is damaged by Moclan culture but his actions in regards to Topa are actually originate from his love and desire to spare Topa that pain. His damage blinds him to how he is hurting Topa. But Orville is not woke, there are multiple examples of string men, and excellent examples of strong women. The women of Orville do not need a weak man to appear strong. They are simply strong characters who happen to be women.

I say this with no exaggeration or hyperbole. The Orville is one of if not even potentially the best TV show ever. The writers are so talented and the actors are at the top of their game. How they could make a cis heterosexual man like me empathize with Topa and transgender people is brilliant. How they introduced a new character developed that character and gave them an end that is simultaneously tragic and beautiful. The story arc of Ensign Burke was so satisfying and well done that they turned a character I didn't like into one I actually cried for when they passed and in the story it's a lynchpin for the entire season and possibly the series and is nothing short of genius. The only true tragedy is if the show doesn't get a 4th season if the writers and cast are sure they can continue the excellence and the magic that is this show. It's a beautifully made work of art that will go down as one of the finest things ever made for entertainment. I hope they are able to commit and create a season 4 especially with the same level of quality. If not at least they gave us the best finale ever in television.

This show is so good at the story telling.. Instead of just making an episode that relates so much to trans gender-ism (idk if that's an accurate term) they made it part of the story. Star Trek discovery attempted this by adding 2 trans characters. One is shown to have some engineering skills, where as the other is just trans and that's all the character is... and they force it so so much. If there was a show trying to make a funny character, and the only thing the show did was have characters say "that guy is funny" without actually having them say anything funny or do anything you would say that's not a good comical character. Orville planted this seed seasons ago, and built up the tension that lead to this episode and it made it feel significant. It wasn't a shallow attempt to just touch on a social issue. Well done

Gender identity is a real thing, She knew she was always a girl and, didn't fit in just like trans people. Trans people similarly know what their gender identity is from inside. We're the ones who don't understand them and do the things which Klyden and Mowclans did to Topa.

It is a good episode as it doesn't necessarily fit one side of the Trans argument. While it seems to be pro-trans, it can be easily argued that Topah was forced to become trans which caused later confusion and desire to return to her original gender.

In fairness, it has never really been said how fast Moclan children grow. Also it turns out part of the episode was filmed prior to covid shutting production down. Almost 2 years had passed between the beginning and end of the episode so the actor playing Topa had grown some.
