The fun part for me as a Bulgarian is that you was having a walk in one of our parks “West Park” of Sofia if we have to be specific. We as Bulgarians like to keep our parks as natural as possible , often the park fading away into woods or rivers. Seeing you as a 2 meter tatted up guy being afraid of places i grew up at as a child is mad funny

Absolutely... But even people with his brain powers have to live and obviously being a drama queen in a regular city park is one way to do it, given the audience he has.

Nah boys dont get me wrong , these places look terrifying if you havent been there before . What i wanted to point out is the importance of the upbringing and the point of view . Im sure if i go to a similar place somewhere abroad i will be just as terrified. Gypsy slums are indeed dangerous , as well as secluded parks .

He was definitely over dramatising. Yes - the weather was perfect for a horror movie; yes - Fakulteta is a total shit hole, but he was so paranoid - even the martenitza on that tree scared him. For god’s sake - he did a convenient cashless payment a few meters before the slum 😂

Yo, bulgarian here, when Spanian visited a branch with a strange looking bracelet at 15:14 it is called a martenitsa. Its an ancient tradition that we wear in the beginning to end of march or until you see the first tree blossom the bracelet itself symbolises blood, conception, birth, warmth, friendship, mutual affection but mostly joy and hope, thats why when you hang it on the tree we traditionally make a wish or two.

The funny fact is that Sofia is amongst the least violent capital cities in EU. It's just dirty and there are lots of poor (and unhappy) people. Hence angry people. But, I'd say there are bigger chances to get mugged in Barcelona than in Sofia.

That strange rope you saw in the park, is called Martenitsa, and we ware it because of Baba Marta. We ware those bracelets around our wrist and this indicated the end of Winter and the beginning of spring. We take them off when we see a blooming tree and you tie it on that tree. Or birds which are only found during specific time of the year and not in winter. In addition those old Blocks are called EPK(Large formwork is the literal name) and yes they are still in use. Some of those old buildings were build during the Soviet regime and to this day they are still used. To us this is normal.

I loved the video and laughed many times :) The factory you mention is actually the heating plant which provides the heat for all the concrete building apartments around western Sofia`s neighborhoods. Sofia has several of these plants which support heating through the parts of Sofia during winter time. The polluted air you mention is not because if the smoke from the chimneys but because Fakulteta poorer residents are burning wood, plastic, rubber tires etc. in their home fire stoves, since they do not have central heating. Therefore, with the help of the wind, the whole western part of Sofia smells like shit during the winter or on a colder days. The West park has always been wild like that, it has a `normal` section which actually looks pretty good, it is loaded with with barbecues, portable toilets, places where your dog can play and drink water from, brand new kids playgrounds, security cameras on every lamp, restaurants, etc. Your maps app just walked you through the `wild` part of the biggest park in Sofia which was hilarious to watch. Fakulteta is named after the agronomical faculty, situated in the middle of the neighborhood, which is still active and was there before all the gypsies moved in there back in the 1930s. If you decide to visit again, bring me as a guide next time, I love walking through the West park and laughed a lot on your anxiety to go through paths on which I walk my kid and dog almost every weekend. :) Great vid! :)

Hey, I am Bulgarian. Bulgaria and Sofia are much more than this. Overall Sofia is not more dangerous than Paris and London, for example. I could say it's even safer. You saw the metro is clean, cozy and new. Yes, there are doggy areas and of course air pollution is a huge problem. 15:07 - don't be afraid of this. They are called martenitsa - we, Bulgarian, put them on our hands on 1st of March each year as a sign for the upcoming spring. It's a long time tradition for health and prosperity. And when we see the first storks for the spring, we tie them on trees with blossom.

The big problem with the gypsy neighborhoods in general is that all the houses are illegally built over the decades. The state recognizes that there are people with their needs, but in the same time they don't pay taxes and the state can not provide the full list of benefits. It is a limbo. You can't get better living conditions, because you are poor. But you are poor, because you can't get better living conditions. It is a vicious cycle for poor people in general.

So it’s ridiculous that he even didn’t check where he is going. In addition he really needs local to explain. The video itself show a life that is so far from the reality. I was hoping you were gonna visit Bulgaria soon. As a native, this video made me laugh as much as it saddened me. You chose both the worst time and one of the worst places to visit, so that was a nice combo. Sofia is miserable in general, but very much so during winter. There are certainly more dangerous slums than this, though. Fakulteta is definitely bad, but there are places like Червената Пръст (The Red Dirt) in my home town Stara Zagora, where if you go during the day, there's a 95% chance you're gonna get robbed, and if you go at night, there's basically a guarantee you'll at least get robbed, most likely beaten as well. Even the police don't go there, it's basically a lawless slum full of criminals. As much as this video made me laugh, it also breaks my heart to see how Bulgaria appears to foreigners. It sucks, because Bulgarians are not bad people. Stupid - definitely. But not bad. Loved this, hope to see more of BG in your vlogs.
