In my final year of High School in Australia, I went on a school service trip to Cambodia, and part of the trip was visiting S21 and the killings fields in our first week. Our tour guide who we had for the first four days of the trip, whose name was PK, was a great guy who was happy and cheerful the entirety of the time we had him. His uplifting and spirited behavior even continued when we were at S21, however once we entered the prison block with the room full of photos of victims, his demeanor changed. Passing into one of the rooms, he abruptly stopped talking to us and began to gaze at one of the pictures. Shorty after looking at this particular photo of someone, he began to talk again, albeit through broken words and quiet sobbing. Our tour guide, PK, was a prisoner of S21, and one of the photos on the wall was a picture of his cousin who had been killed right in front of him during this time. After he moved on we all quickly looked at this photo (and many of the other photos were of a similar nature). This body, starved, abused, mutilated, void of any humanity left. Every bone in his body was tightly wrapped around dirty and punctured skin. Hundreds of bodies covered in scars, bruises, and marks of violence. The atmosphere of our entire group was utterly traumatized for the rest of the week and I still think back to the sound of him crying. Once back on our bus, he further explained that he survived due to his ability to fix the typewriters that the prison guards and other members of the Khmer Rouge used. As such, they kept him alive until eventually he escaped from S21 when Vietnam invaded. Another couple of details to add to the killing fields: towards the right side of the main memorial are a set of sugar palm trees. PK told us that Khmer Rouge soldiers would collect these leaves and slash victims throats (as their leaves are very sharp), amongst many other methods of killing via blunt force trauma or knives as a means to save on ammunition. As briefly seen at 38:30, almost every skull had coloured stickers on specific locations of the skull to denote a range of info from the age of the victim to the method of their death, to even the number of times they were attacked. It would also be an understatement to say that many skulls had numerous stickers on them, indicating that they were attacked several times by several different methods of force. Thank you very much Spanian for publishing this video in such a professional, considerate and informative manner. Watching this brought back many memories of my trip in Cambodia, including all the people that I met over there.

By luck both parents were flown to the same city Oakland, Ca where they finally met and had me and my sister. Im so fucking thankful im alive right now. My grandpa is still alive at 95 today. The hardest legs of the trip was visiting an orphanage for disabled children affected by the agent orange chemical used in the war, and visiting the S21 prison and Killing Fields. During my visits I didn’t show much raw emotion. Maybe because I was in real shock or cause I was with other students. But fuck man watching this video really brought it out of me. Well said, Spanian. I visited in 2022, found the most devastating part was that the prisoners were told they were going home when they were driven out of the prison, so they left with a smile. Little did they know, they were being taken to the killing field. This led to all the other prisoners also thinking they too would get to go 'home'' one day. RIP to all lives lost.

My parents also lived through this. It was something that they always avoided talking about. Most of my Fathers family were executed during this time. He only has his 2 sister and brother that survived. Most Cambodian Family's you meet will have similar stories We were the lucky few that were able to escape and relocate to the US. I is always hard to see these videos but I am glad it is shared. I vist Cambodia almost every year and I still haven't gotten myself to visit these sites. Thank you for sharing. Love your Vlog.

Thankyou for showing S21 and the killing fields with the respect they deserve. I hope you managed to talk to the survivors too. You will never forget a trip to these places. What I can’t understand is even with everything that has happened even in our lifetimes - the genocide, the land mines the poverty. Cambodians are still some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere ever! I will be heading over for Khmer new year this April and will be back again in December as I work voluntarily with an NGO doing a bunch of different stuff building houses, working in school, working on cattle farms. Cambodia is a magical place and I think you are finding that now. In the utter and total chaos and insanity in Cambodia I find peace I can’t find Australian. Thankyou for giving this piece of their history the respect it deserves but there is so much more yet to find. Have a blast mate

Twelve minutes into the video, I had to take a break and gather my thoughts. I once worked with a guy who lost his parents in Cambodia in this era. I didn't understand a lot about it at the time, but I went home and did my research and it hit hard. The absolute devastation humanity is capable of doing to one another will never cease to shock us, and we must remain aware. As you said, it won't be the last time. This is a great piece of work, bro.

Brother Spanian, it's amazing your compassion and your love for Cambodia and it's people. My father is Cambodian and he still remembers the last time he saw his parents by the river. They told him to run and go as far away as possible. He walked 2 weeks until he reached Vietnam. Till this day he's never seen them or 9 of his 13 siblings ever again. Watching this brought tears to my eyes, tears which for some reason I never had when I went to the museum myself. I think Cambodians hold in the pain very well, the darkness remains but we've learnt to be happy and appreciate what we now have.

This is the most powerful video I have ever seen a KZread channel cover. Absolutely heart breaking the suffering that people have endured. The amount of human genocide that humans have inflicted on each other is just sickening. Thank you so much for your work on this. Total respect.

It's so important for online personalities to release videos like this and show this side of humanity. I strongly believe that in order to enjoy life and what it has to offer it's important to visit places like this to understand where humanity has been and what it's capable of. I visited Auchwitz and had the exact same reaction as Spanian did here... Going into it I had read everything about it, watched every documentary and film that you could think of. But nothing prepares you for the physical experience of going to a place like this. Actually being there and sitting with it - taking in the surroundings and trying to possibly understand how such atrocities could happen.

Spanian you are amazing lad, one of a rare breed who take in the history and actually listen and understand what your seeing/reading, I want to visit Cambodia and this gave me and many others an insight you’d never see anywhere else, thanks lad, showing your emotional side is also something many men needed to see Love you mate

Portrayed the atrocities with grace and respect mate, and highlighted the incredible resilience and strength of the Cambodian people. Important that these things are taught and shown. Thank you, and thank you for being vulnerable too.
