Ink and watercolor sketch of Algonquin Park river rapids

For this drawing I use an Algonquin Park photo taken last year on a canoe trip. It's nice for a change to go from buildings to natural subjects.
Hope you enjoy this video in real time.
Thanks for watching.

Hey Jim, sounds like Alberta Canada, warm temps the other day, snow was all but gone, and 3” of snow on ground now. Thanks for these sketches, very helpful for simplifying scenes like this.

Yes, here in Ontario we’ve had up and down weather all winter. Thanks for watching. When sketching on location it can be harder to focus and simplify, this is why I’m doing the indoor drawing, to “train” myself.

One of the most relaxing and pleasant things I can do with my iPad is to watch and listen while you draw. I wish I had the confidence to go straight in with ink and hope that one day I can as the ink work looks so much more natural than with ink over a pencil under drawing. Many thanks for sharing 🙏

You are too kind Graham. You could always do a very rough light pencil sketch with a few lines to get position, perspective etc. and then use this as a vague guide so you mind is free to let the pen create. Hmmmm…. That’s good, I may do that when I’m having a hard time getting things strait.

Subscribed! Your sketching is beautiful! So far I’ve seen your Intro video and this one, and I’m very impressed by your personality, style and skill. Wow. I hope more and more folks will discover your channel, too; you deserve it. Personally, my favorite subjects are nature-based, but I can see in your video thumbnails that you have a real gift for old buildings, so I’ll watch those too. Keep going, and thanks for sharing your art!

Wow! Thanks so much. I’ll probably do more “nature” drawing as well.

Another great video, 🙏🏻… can you explain how you hold the pen? Seems pretty far up the barrel. Does it give you more control somehow?

Thanks bbq. Holding it higher does a few things for me. It tends to make my grip more relaxed and prevents a sore hand after sketching for a while. The resulting lines are more loose and “ sketchy” which is what I want from this style. Flowing curved lines are easier with the wider arc you can get. These are always hard questions, I have to stop and think about why I do things a certain way, when drawing I get into a rhythm and don’t really think about it too much. Thanks for making me think :)

Looks great! I think you mentioned in one of your other videos, but what kind of pen are you using?

It’s a Pilot Metropolitan with a fine nib. I have used fine liners and dip pens, but no other fountain pens yet so cannot compare.

I remember your mention of moving to the fountain pen from the ballpoint, can't recall the reason. Flow, intensity, ?

I’ve never really drawn with a ballpoint pen, but have used fine liners. I had this fountain pen for writing and decided to try it for sketching and loved the feel. It feels smooth on the surface and the ink flows nicely. As I haven’t used other fountain pens yet, I can’t compare, but this one feels good to me. Same with the ink I fill it with, flows nice, nice and black, but I haven’t tried others.
