About the blob of ink. If you are using the type of pen that has a high capacity and fills with an eye dropper then what can happen is as you use up some of the ink the air bubble that forms in the top of the chamber will heat up from the warmth of your hand and the air will expand, building up pressure and then it will explode out of the nib. Some ways to prevent that is to refill the pen about halfway through, change the way you hold the pen, or take a break after some time drawing. Some of those pens have a way to “burp” the pen and relieve the pressure. Great drawing by the way!

Thanks for posting this video. Another great lesson on simplifying a sketch. When you mentioned using a dip pen when you were young, it brought back my memory of attending Catholic elementary school. We had to use Sheaffer cartridge pens; my favorites were the red and clear barrel models.

Jim, I always love your videos, not only for how well each sketch turns out, but for what I learn from watching you. Today, I learned how your artistic skill has allowed you to work with a line that maybe wasn’t exactly where it was wanted and a blob which spontaneously just appeared. Thank you for your wonderful art and the lessons therein.

Hello, I have purchased the pen you use but Pilot says they do not have waterproof black in cartridges for this pen. Can you help me find what I need? I so enjoy your art and wish to try your technique. Oh, I did buy Platinum Carbon ink cartridges but they don't fit.. Thank you.

Sorry for the confusion. The pilot metropolitan I purchased came with a converter. I bought the waterproof platinum carbon black ink in a bottle ( Amazon on line ) and fill the converter from the bottle each time. Hope it works out for you.

Ah! another lovely one! I am mesmerized by how You sketch the trees! It looks so simple yet elegant and clean! And the ink wash looks wonderful here! I have tried watercolours and they are great, but since i have only used pencil as a tool for more than 20 years all the colour options overwhelm me! its interesting to see how you can tell so much story with just one colour! I will have to look out for this..ink wash in my local artist shop. As always thank You for the videos! Had a lovely start of the day !

Thanks for the nice comment and thoughts. There are many ways to make a tonal monochrome sketch , pencil being a great way as well, and I love drawing with charcoal. It is nice to not have to deal with the colours sometimes. Any inexpensive water soluble ink will work or just use a brown or black watercolour mix.

Very nice little ink and watercolour. I live in Yorkshire, england and we have a lot of dry stone walls around. I was once told that the wooden posts were put alongside the walls for when it snowed heavily. Markers to find your way home.

The sketch turned out so nicely, and the tone is so in place, this is great! What I love about sketching is how every single line when observed separately seems not quite right, but when you put the sketch together, the object is there, it has substance, and all the lines are where they need to be. Thank you for sharing your art and for inspiration.

I love to watch how you draw so effortlessly, live-to-paper in real time and how you create such accurate perspective, which I find so difficult. Seeing the angle at which you hold your pen and the strokes that you make, I find very helpful. Ontario is an artist’s dream, with an abundance of beautiful old, weathered barns and other outbuildings, farm equipment and farmhouses and I love how you capture them so beautifully.

Good morning Jim. I just had a thought and I hope it is ok with you. My pen and wash work is more precise and my washes fill in all the paper. I admire your “detailed loose” style and want to try something to free my style up a bit. I am going to rewatch your videos without sound and slowed down to allow me to study and copy what you do. I am thinking it will change my style and give me two distinct ways of approaching each work I do. I hope to become comfortable with my modified style to give me variety in my works. Your videos have inspired this old guy and I thank you so much….thank you!

I love the effect for the dense forest in the background! Really good as always Jim! I was curious about your fountain pen, do you use a refillable cartridge for it or prefilled? I've never used one before but I bought a bunch of India ink pens and they all dried out on me, so I'm considering a switch to a fountain pen. That one that you are using looks like it has a nice flow to it 😁
