I gotta say i was very impressed with that old 4runner, did very good on the trails and the gas mileage was impressive. Out of all of them id take the 4runner

I enjoy the camaraderie between them all, and that they take a little digs at each other throughout the videos I’ve watched.

I suspect a lot of the results can be explained by the fact that the first 60 miles were uphill to the Eisenhower Tunnel, followed by 200 miles of downhill to Fruita. Regardless, interesting results and a great video.

There's aren't many things that I love more in this world than cheap Toyota 4x4s.

I’m always happy when my 5.7 tundra gets over 17 mpg. I do a mix of city and hwy and usually average about 14.5, but I’ve gotten as high as 22.5 when going downhill with the wind at my back😅

Okay….These cheap vehicle/ budget vehicle series are awesome. I think it would be awesome to try a couple different stages of upgrades, resulting in multiple videos. The hunt/ purchase process is always interesting. Next, first stage, safety first. All items to be safe on road. Then they get the first off road test/ shake down. Take them to their limit. Second stage: first set of upgrades. Every car has different needs, so set a budget and allow for creativity. Level two shakedown. Then the minimum+ level. All levels are to create more off road worthiness at each stage. So many videos could be made. You guys are awesome. Great content.

It really is. Toyota really overbuilt the internals of that engine. Everything is super beefy.

@@hellkitty1014 Overbuilt, sure 100%. Way tougher than GM's 5.3, but if there is a failure, it can get expensive to fix very quickly.

I was actually shocked at how decent the fuel economy was on all 3 of them, given the tires and terrain. When Roman showed the range rover trip meter which showed an average of 55mph it all made sense. In Texas, my average road trip speeds are closer to 75-80mph where my 5.7L Grand Cherokee does about 17-18mpg. I've never driven that stretch of Colorado to Utah but I'm sure it's a lot more scenic and worth slowing down for! Great series as always! I'd love to see you continue it and show what these vehicles can be modified into on a reasonable budget. Every off road vehicle seems to have a budget build configuration that then requires an extensive modification or budget to go beyond. Usually around 2" of lift and 32 or 33" tires. Comparing them in that configuration gives a much better representation of the platform for a weekend budget off roader.

I’m not surprised, especially the 4runner (since I own one). The higher altitude makes it run lean (less air means makes the computer compensate with less fuel per stroke). Less power but more mpg. From years of tracking my 4runner it goes up 2 mpg around that altitude. So sea level would be less impressive.

Favorite series on the channel!

Our family had a huge car payment on a very nice sienna which had a transmission problem so I sold it and bought and 07 sequoia for cash with 200k miles and I save $400/mo even with the bad mpg.

Not long enough. I really enjoy these episodes so this one wasn't long enough, Now I've gotta wait another week. In all seriousness this is by far the best Car/truck review channel on KZread by far "in my opinion" I look forward to watching every episode that comes on. Thanks for all the work you put into bringing us reviews, testing, & just plain ole good entertainment. Keep up the good work.

I love those series. Had 2 Tundras the last 5 years (2010 TRD, 2015 SR5) . Now down to one and an HD. Best of both worlds 😁

The 4Runner was impressive. Just finished my first road trip on new Falkens and only got 20 mpg 02 tacoma. The Landcruiser was much better than expected. Not daily driver good but weekend warrior good enough.

​@@schadlarry I believe at higher altitudes where air is less dense and less oxygen , the ECU injects less fuel and you get less power but better mpgs. When you have dense oxygen rich air it allows more fuel injection so more power but less mpgs. I noticed this in my 1.6l civic I used to get almost 350 miles out of a tank and after I replaced a bad O2 sensor, it felt noticeably better but now I can barely get 300 miles.

I don't care, I'm still taking the 80 Series! There is a huge JDM aftermarket for those I-6s.

Love these series’….. my favorite one was the old one with that red jeep with transmission problems and Andre’s little Mazda pickup

Biggest upgrade i made was from my 97 4runner 3.4 inline to my 03 4.7 limited, sans that 404 frame not found issue - it makes way more power and gets better mileage, even with 245k miles. Having said that, when I got my 97 I said the only reason I'd sell it was to get a newer one. Rock solid, even at 16mpg hwy.

The 4runner surprised me. The others did not. I'm actually pretty impressed that you got nearly 16 mpg on the 80 series. You're effectively regeared on that 80 which helps on the highway, but obviously does not help with power on the hills.

I have a (newer than nathan's) 4th gen 4runner and I really resonated with his comments about it being underpowered. I did some small power upgrades like bigger exhaust (headers back) and a cold air intake with a tune. It gave me the extra power I wanted and some extra fuel efficiency. Factory MPG is 17-19 city/highway respectively and I get 18-19 city and 21-22 highway with that little bit of extra power

The V8 is the one to get in the 4th gen’s.

I have a 1998 Toyota 4runner with almost exactly the same millage. I do have a lift and slightly bigger tires but it is driven on flat land in Texas. I get about 15 mpg on a good day.

I’m stunned the FZJ80 is getting such incredible mileage!! In the mountains! At altitude!! I live in Malibu and I average 8 mpg in town and roughly 12 mpg on the freeway. Granted, I have 35’s, winch bar, and a laden drawer system in the back, but I’m still floored by how well Nathan is doing. Thanks for this great series. I hope you make Land Cruiser vids for the rest of the year!

My 21’ TRD ORP gets 21-22 highway and 19-20 city. It’s all in how you drive them.

@@trailrunnah8886 yeah I’ve called a lot of people out on Reddit over the mpg’s and posted pics to prove it. Those claiming they get 15-16 are driving them like their V8’s and they’re not and won’t built for that.

@@KendrasEdge757 exactly! There's no getting around that. It's a slow vehicle, so if you just drive it gently you can actually get pretty good mileage. I've had people on the forums call me out saying that I'm lying that I get over 20 mpg. It's like no, I just don't drive like an a-hole, haha. I think a lot of Tacoma and 4Runner owners come from Subarus or other little cars where they're so used to just flooring it all the time.

I traded my 15’ 6,7 powerstroke on my 21’ 4Runner and first thing I noticed was the power difference lol but I know it’s just a 4ltr v6 built for reliability and enough power to get you around. I’m good with that. My toy/ticket days are over. For the most part anyways lol

15.7 due to the altitude. in 1996 I drove a brand new 80 series from Memphis to Chicago and it did a worst 9.8 and best 12.9. 75-82 mph. My 2003 120 series does 10-15 around southern WI on 33" tires.

Interesting, I flew down to Reno NV from WA to pick up my 80. On the way back I averaged 15mpgs and that was going over 5 mph than the speed limit.

Being a 2nd gen Tundra owner,I am partial to it. But having worked for Toyota for 20 years through the 80s and 90s, I spent alot of time in all of those vehicles and my father in law had an fj80 we regrettably sold after he could no longer drive. Fact is you can't go wrong with any of these trucks,each has its own niche and fills it nicely.

Regarding the 4Runner going up I-70: at least it's not a 22re! As a kid I would visit my Aunts and Uncles in CO and took many rides up to the ski hill in a '91. I was young, but I still remember the frustrated look on my uncle's face as he rapped that thing out in 2nd gear in the right lane!

Please continue this series!

I want you guys to do this again with old Ram trucks. I have a ram 250 from 1991 with a 5.9L gas v8. and it gets 8 miles per gallon completely unloaded XD

Those throttle-body-injected engines were the worst for fuel economy and not good for power either. The Magnum 5.9/360 in a 1996 2500 4x4 with the small, stock tires would do 12.5 MPG in highway driving punctuated with climbs up bad roads. Similar truck with a 12V Cummins and 5-speed would do 13 MPG with a slide-in camper and enclosed car trailer.

Really enjoyed this series. Another idea is a cheap Isuzu challenge. I saw an old Rodeo on the trails the other day and it was doing quite well. Kinda forgot about that brand.

I think for me one thing that sticks out is how much better automatic transmissions are currently. They have at least twice the number of gears as these old trucks, but always seem to know the right gear to hold for the most part.

People make a big todo about gas prices here in California, but my local prices are only 35 cents more than what it is there for the same octane (We don't have 85 here).

Definitely surprising numbers. Something about the altitude helps with the fuel economy. I was visiting out there a few years ago from the east coast, was able to get 22 in a first gen Taco, and 25 in a Suburban.

Yep. With Toyota using 4.10s and 4.30s exclusively, it made for a thirsty beast. But was super quick for the era and even kept up with the forced-induction trucks from Ford.

Still driving one today. She is very hard on the gas but reliable as ever.

I drove my Kia sole from Vegas to Dallas, and I got 28mpg so relatively speaking these trucks weren’t too bad

I’ve got a 2021 Tundra SR5 with just over 15k miles and I would LOVE to see 17.6 mpg. Love the truck anyway

The best I ever got with my '70 C-10 was 17 MPG. It's got a 307 V8, quadrajet carb, 3.73 rear end, 3 speed manual. I was going 55 on the highway, though.

When you get larger tires sometimes it's good to re-gear the difs

Topping off your tank with fuel will eventually kill your vehicle’s evaporation canister. For certain this happens in an 80 Series Land Cruiser.

Speaking of a 4Runner getting 22mpg, it was amazing to me that the '03 V8 AWD could get 22mpg, while my '95 S10 RWD could only manage 16mpg. Toyota for the win.

For sure MPG have lot of variables. On my recent mpg video with my 5gen 4Runner Limited I got 21mpg on almost 50miles run here in CO. Pretty happy with the mpg having 33in tires and fulltime 4wd. I think its decent compared to newer Turbos Ford uses or Cylinder deactivation GM or even similar size Honda Pilot or same powertrain Passport uses which allow them to run on 3 cylinders.

I had a 2008 Tundra with the 5.7. Best vehicle I ever owned, but yeah, it loved gas.

My 2007 5.7L Tundra has 315,000 miles and delivers about 20 mpg on the highway at 55 to 60 mph, it drops to about 16.5 mpg when I am traveling at about 80 mph. Not bad for a 17 year old Tundra that I paid $5k for, and still does 0 to 60 in 6 seconds.

In Minnesota, 3rd Gen 4runner can get 26 mpg; the 80's series Landcruiser with 4.10 differential can get 17 mpg or with the 5.41 differential(I think its either 5.41 or 5.46 differential), you get 14 mpg; the Tundra can get 18 mpg. I've driven the 4Runner (used to own one until it got t-bone). My uncle's 405k miles Tundra before he switched to e-85. A friend of mine own 3 of these 80's series Landcruiser. One of them is one each different differential. The third one, he is doing the diesel model swap of Japan model

That has always been the motto of Lexus basically. You buy a nice luxurious beast truck, that will last forever so long you take care of it and you never ask what kind of mileage it does. You just fill it up, don’t look at numbers at the gas stations and you don’t question them. Also, my 08 Dodge Durango with the 4.7L flex engine, does 17 on the highway best case scenario, worst? Maybe about 14. Not towing, just going. So yeah. Toyotas aren’t too bad.

True, you don’t buy these for the mileage 😅. My 06 LX 470 gets about 10 city/15 hwy. 33’s, 310k, still runs great

I’ve got 22-23 in a 5.7 sequioa all day long. And a 3.4 Tacoma I’ve gotten 20 before on 33s…. But normal driving in my area they both usually average 14-16 😅

Love this series, I’ve had a couple Tacoma, they aren’t great on fuel

2020 4runner i typically get 13 to 15. That's hills mostly almost no flat but still pretty bad. Oh and San Diego gas prices usually 4.50 to 5. A gallon

You guys should do a cheap nissan and cheap Honda offroad tests also love these series

Honda does not have enough.. OR competition in this segment. Nissan would work, except, something tells me the fan base for old Nissan is low, so they would not draw in as much interest. (I would watch)

@WW-wf8tu to a point honda doesn't I see where your coming from I would like to see them do every company that can compete in this if they can..honda has the older passports Ridgeline the older crvs with a spacer kit and bigger tires are pretty capable too

I think Andre should sell his Colorado and buy the ‘08 Tundra from TFL. He would be much happier with the Tundra for what he does, not to mention having the reliability.

Yes, they’re thirsty, but as someone who dailies a 100 Series and whose wife dailies an FJ Cruiser, while you spend on gas, you save on insurance, repair costs, headache, etc. totally worth it.

I drove my two Sequoias (01 and 07) a total of 400,000 miles. Averaged 13 mpg...😢, but never had a single problem. Like a Swiss Army Knife.

To bad Nathan didn’t buy one that meet the criteria, as there are several for sale in the Denver area and even one in Boulder currently. Was surprised at the MPG of all.
