    I work in corrections and it’s important to know how to physically defend yourself but another one that’s even more important is verbal defense. Verbal judo is super important in law enforcement too. Being able to talk someone down is pretty important in my eyes. In my profession you always try to avoid physical conflict

  • @JR-ju3kj

    @JR-ju3kj

    4 жыл бұрын

    Very well said. I think that knowing how to deescalate a situation is something that people who learn how to fight should know how to do as well-regardless of their profession but absolutely, with some professions and jobs, it`s basically a necessity to be able to talk someone down. My brother worked as a security guard and bouncer for a time and that was something he learned how to do pretty quickly. Vin Diesel, who worked as a bouncer for many years before becoming an actor, has talked about how in those kinds of jobs, you learn how to read people and I`m sure in corrections, law enforcement, the military, government agencies, etc, it`s exactly the same. A lot of people think that fights in real-life are like the movies and they often find themselves in for a rude awakening so people should avoid physical conflicts at all costs. If all other available means have been exhausted and there is no other choice, THEN, yes, people should fight and defend themselves and that`s why it`s so important to be able to fight as Jocko was saying. One of the best ways to avoid fighting is being able to fight.

    Just from real world experience, people that can handle themselves seem to have an "air" about them that just kind of makes people think twice about trying anything or picking an actual fight. People will see a person and think they might have a chance of starting something or beating them, but then the little voice in their head starts talking about how that person could also probably put a hurting on them that makes it not worth the chance. My boss used to have one of his friends who was an ex-special forces soldier come in and teach the people at our office basic self defense and anti-terrorism stuff, because if you work in an office building now of a certain size they have protocols they have to follow now, and I always remember he told us that you should never go looking for a fight, but if one comes looking for you you need to be prepared to handle it.

    I have to disagree with Jocko, as much as I admire and respect him, I don't think "most" men want to fight. I think he thinks they do because "most" guys he hangs with are fighters. His world is not the regular world. In high school, I'm guessing that only 15-20% of guys wanted to throw down for almost any reason. But the reason for the fight matters, so it's a more complex question that just wanting to fight or not. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to throw down badly whenever I saw injustice or unfairness. I saw three dudes bullying a little Asian kid for being Asian. I saw red, my veins pumped, and I powered through those guys like a helicopter blade, their blood was flying everywhere. But if a guy just wants to fight me because I accidentally bumped into him or something dumb like that at a party, no I don't want to fight. So, am I a guy who wants to fight? Yes and no, depending on the situation.

It will teach you what you need to survive against an untrained opponent pretty fast. So if youre someone who cares about that and doesnt like martial arts but needs the basics I would highly suggest it.
