Jiu-Jitsu & Mental Health: How BJJ Community, Exercise and Friendships makes life worthwhile.

Спорт

Is Jiu-Jitsu your Therapy? The world is a better place after a good hard roll. There are so many layers as to why we become addicted to this crazy thing and why it is so unique. The connection between training partners, the shared struggles, the trust and the mutual understanding that people outside Jiu-Jitsu just don't understand.
Deep Bonds are formed and the journey is a shared adventure, which is the antidote to modern societies isolation and lack of community. Mental health, anxiety and depression make us feel dislocated and alone. Office work, zoom calls, drowning in emails and bills it's hard to feel happy.
You go to BJJ class, meet new people, strangle them, get pummelled and then go for a meal after.
The connections you make help to balance the ups & downs life throws at you.

Right on time with this one. Felt off mentally the last few days, did not want to go to class this am. Went anyway. Totally typical class, lots of struggles, hard work in rolls…now I feel 100% better mentally. Saw the boys, got killed and killed some myself, and the mood just changed for the better.

Im a married guy with kids and zero friends. I train BJJ 3 days a week and I definitely gain a lot from doing it. I feel down when I can’t go for whatever reason (kids, sick, etc) it’s just an overall beneficial and fulfilling part of my life. And I can’t imagine not doing it.

Personally I finally found my Jiu-Jitsu academy after trying to live my passion in normal civilian life in the walkable center of town. I found that uninitiated people are sometimes shocked, scared or angry when you randomly choke, throw or jointlock them in public. Sometimes they even get police involved and cause all kinds of stress. My life got so much simpler once I found a group of like-minded people and my mental health has improved significantly. 😊

BJJ has done alot for me.. By getting over break-ups easier, helps put your life into perspective about what important and whats not, I do not care for material possessions or want them like I once desired..

My former gym is now closed due to some illegal activity with the instructor so i havent been to class in about 2 months. I have since found a new place to train just havent gone yet. My wife can definitely tell a difference in my mentality. Ive known for awhile that jiu jitsu is good for my mental state of mind

For a lot of people, myself included, BJJ was a rising tide in life. It elevated everything: physical appearance (minus the cauliflowers), health, stopping addictions, more confidence, overall gentler with people. On top of that, being able to beat the 💩 out of someone is a good skill to have in your back pocket. Great pod fellas! -Memphis, TN, USA

Okay, it's scary how well timed this video is for myself. Been shoulder deep in major life changes led by alot of self discovery. Yes, it's a huge positive that it's something for you and you alone in your family unit. but that's just step one. Bjj as a whole can show you how to lead a better life. The lessons you learn on the mat can be directly carried over to life. Not talking subs and sweeps but the skill you gain to self reflect and look at things objectively. On the mat we check our ego, look at what we're doing wrong or maybe just need to do better and take the steps to address it. Eventually you look through others perspectives on the same problem and you've gained objectivity. So, what you have is personal/situational reflection. This plus implementing the lessons you find through the process is the very thing that leads to personal growth. To maximize your "jiu jitsu", take this same method of growth and apply it to life. Not just work or how you conduct you daily home habits but just sit and reflect on yourself. How you're feeling and what's driving those feelings and pull on the threads that pop up. Check your ego and explore those uncomfortable threads and see where they lead. With out doing that you won't grow. This is how you rank up your mental health game using jiu jitsu. Also rest rounds are only a waste if you're not trying to find a way to stay productive during them (reflect on your last roll or study other rolls happening during your rest). Unlock your mind and unlock your growth OSS

BJJ hasn't been helping my mental health, because that's fine. But I've definitely noticed that while I'm in class that I'm like a giddy child because I'm having so much fun lol

Cheers from Brasil! Another great talk, guys. I still don't roll; in this gym you just start to roll after you complete the 60 first fundamental classes (and yeah, this works form me as a method plan), so I'm about 2 months training basic movements and basic drills. I should get my first stripe (30 classes completed) next week. This first phase is important, feels like schoolyard, small lessons for big kids. It's nice but at the same time it's not much organic (and it shouldn´t be, I guess), so I'm still not getting that imense stress relief that is so spoken about jiu jitsu. Maybe I'm too concerned or anxious (ironically) to get this vibe. I wonder if actual rolling will inevitably ignitiate this stress-relief-energy, because will inevitably be more fluid. Thanks for the content. It's helping me a lot.

@@BPchadlite Don't get me wrong. It's been a really cool experience and the learning process is happening step by step. Otherwise I wouldn't be training at least 3x or 4x a week. We had a taste of a roll at the end of a training day and it was pretty cool, even us early white belts not having much tools to work with. It felt different, something like "ok, this is real; now I have to really solve this problem", because both partners are equally engaged in attack and defense strategies.
