Bulletproof For BJJ

Bulletproof For BJJ

We help BJJ players of all levels build strong, mobile and injury-proof bodies.

The problem for most BJJ players: they’re plagued with injuries and struggle to find balance in their training.

They love jiu jitsu. But after a few years of ups and downs often end up broken, disheartened, and quitting altogether.

The journey isn’t easy. After 25 years on the mats and in the gym we’ve seen the highs and lows of the sport. But we know jiu jitsu has the power to change lives. We don’t think any BJJ player should feel too broken to continue, or lost on how to stay in shape on the mats.

So, we created Bulletproof For BJJ.

Founded by Joe Worthington and James Tomlinson, Bulletproof For BJJ was created to help elevate the level of performance and enjoyment for all BJJ practitioners.

Why do you not want to bring your head forward/down and do a rep by looking upwards/back? Wouldn't you get a deeper stretch and contraction that way? Plus I suspect more ability to fight vertebral compression during rolling. Just curious as to why you specify keeping your neck straight

Got heel hooked by a fucking visiting white belt from another gym in the gi.. He ripped it so hard I didnt have time to tap and just heard a snap. Damaged meniscus and lateral ankle sprain. Trying to do my best rehabing and taking a break from jitsu, but its frustrating and slow.

I tore my left meniscus pretty bad in high school hyper extending my knee over a hurdle. my parents didn't want to do the surgery (I thank them now) and it I finished the track season on it. Well kinda. I would try to do workouts and my knee would just throb with the worst pain. A year after the injury I got an MRI where I found out it was torn and that my bones hand been knocking on each other causing chipping which created even more pain. It took about 2 years total from injury to completely heal. But that was because I brutalized the injury for a year before stopping and letting it heal. Feels great now! I haven't had an issue with it in 13 years.

the Pedro Sauer vs Lance Batchelor match was NOT a good example at all because Lance won ... you clearly ignored the visuals, listened to the biased and incorrect commentary, then only saw what you wanted to see, at no point in time whatsoever did Lance ever feel in danger, he even said so in Black Belt Magazine, and yes given Sauer's background with the Gracies and given the Gracies countless and shameless examples of arrogance, cheating and spinning reality to promote their brand, I'd pick Lance's word over Sauer (who was clearly associated with those Gracie frauds) every single time ... the reality was that Sauer was a top dog world class bjj representative at the time and he was LOSING to an untrained bodybuilder who wasn't even a pro level bodybuilder and before that match, outside of Utah at least, nobody even heard of the guy ... he still got the upper hand, Sauer was losing stamina, losing grip strength and before the match would be won by Lance, the referee (Sauer's very own student and also the biased and delusional commentator of the video no less, very convenient ...) stopped the fight and pulled some sh** excuse out of his ass that Lance would've had his arm broken instead of telling the truth that Sauer was on the verge of losing the match ... I know bjj clowns everywhere refuse to admit this reality but even if they chose to, it still wouldn't change the reality that for a top dog world class bjj guy, it even took him THAT LONG to not even convincingly submit a random generally unknown "meathead" who was not only completely untrained in grappling, but even in combat in general ... you 2 should take off your bjj colored goggles pronto and give credit where credit is due, Sauer lost that match and using that as a "good example" as to why technique can overcome size is delusional and borderline blasphemy to say the least, if you really wanted to come off as credible and use a great example, you should've picked oh idk Fedor Emeliananko submitting Hong Man Choi or something ... now you made yourself look like a bunch of ignorant bjj fan girls who have no credibility whatsoever to speak of ...

Every time some bodybuilder gets the better of literally anyone in a bjj school, even a white or blue belt 90 lbs girl, they be like "HE CLEARLY WRESTLED IN HIGH SCHOOL OR SOMETHING" or "HE GRAPPLED BEFORE" or "THAT PERSON IS NO WHITE OR BLUE BELT OR A TERRIBLE ONE" ... bjj is easily the most petty kid stuff "martial art" I've ever seen when it comes down to coping with their style losing, especially at their own game

Surgeon told me to avoid the scope surgery for my meniscus years ago. He suggested seeing a physical therapist instead to recover and strengthen. His thinking was that most people who get it scoped end up tearing it again and most times its even worse. Ive never had any issues since then

It’s refreshing to hear a surgeon give solid helpful advice and have a vision of recovery without necessarily needing surgery. I’m going through a similar situation albeit a little bit different. I went through a lateral tear about 4 years ago from a combination of heavy squatting and snowboarding. 3 months later i had my MRI which confirmed the tear. I had talks with an orthopaedic surgeon but somehow we lost contact and during that time my knee began to feel better and better on its own. Fast forward a year later and it’s feeling 90 percent. I’m squatting heavy, kickboxing and rolling. Things were great up until 2 months ago when i went through a violent movement while rolling bjj and further tear (not yet confirmed by MRI) in the same knee. At this point i am now experiencing clicking, catching and locking multiple times a day. Me being stubborn I am still lifting, kickboxing and bjj but my quality of life has significantly gone down and the pain I’m experiencing isn’t something I can see myself dealing with long term. I am now in talks to get a surgery in the near future with an ortho surgeon. I just wanted to share my personal experience. For those going through meniscus problems

Great episode! A couple weeks ago, I came home from class and my knee was black from bruising and a bit swollen. I don't know what I did in class, it was a bit weird. I took a week off, kept it elevated, and it is much better. Still has some bruising but at least I am comfortable going back to class and rolling.

I had this exact same issue, the research your surgeon mentioned has been around for about a decade or more. It’s crazy that many surgeons still just recommend going right into the surgery even now. It took about a year for my knee to feel normal. It was a tough year lot of clicking some swelling and lock ups. But keep rehabbing and don’t get discouraged. It’s been a year and half since the flap tear, and I have no knee pain, and am training with no issues. It was a rough journey but I am glad I went this path.

This sounded far less of a discussion based on established facts regarding the CJI and ADCC and much more of a hit job/therapy session for JT to air his personal animus against Craig. There are totally reasonable and grounded criticisms about Craig, but almost zero of the points made by JT fit this bill. He comes across like a jaded ex gf taking the most cynical interpretation of craig possible.

Separately discussing advisable recovery periods/methods of a couple degrees (light to bad) of finger/thumb injuries, wristlocks, overextended armbars, shoulders (kimura/americana), neck sprains (or being stubborn in chokes), ribs, groin, ankles, knees (knee/heelhook), toes. Pete was and is a BJJ intellectual. Maybe you didn't take to his way of teaching like I and countless others have. Pete has an exceptional way of teaching. Many of Petes best guys that he trained through to Blue, Purple, Brown and Black left the club and created clubs themselves then quikly stopped crediting Pete with training them. Other students let him down by not applying themselves due to whatever personal reasons. Many students became the best in Australasia while Mick Wilson became Australia's first world champion. Daniel Cherubin trained from an early age with Pete, from beginner to Blackbelt. Daniel trained from 12 to his mid/late 20s with Pete or around these ages. Pete is the least appreciated contributor to the growth and spread of Bjj world wide. The first federation of bjj outside of Brazil was in Australia, not America or any place else. Pete was over in Brazil training bjj years before the first ufc. What was the year the UFC had it's 30th year anniversary and in what year did Pete's club have it's 30th year anniversary? Pete was on the Mats with his Students everyday, 5 dsys a week minimum for over 25 years and closer to 30. He once told me that he couldn't take his students money if he wasn't on the mats training and working with his students each day. Many of his contemporaries of the time were travelling the country and the world doing all sorts of general self defence seminars. Roger Gracie and many other legends like Renzo share memories with Pete from childhood, teen years and 20's. I couldn't disagree more with your assessment of Pete's ability to articulate and convey technique to his students. I respect your dedication to your training in general and focus in life James, I consider myself along with Mick, one of your first two real mates you made on the Mats. I hope your achieving all you've applied yourself to James, your one of the good guys.

I’d push back on a few points here. While controlling the weight through the negative of the rep is definitely good, I would argue that doing so on the other part is counterproductive for the purposes of BJJ. You want that explosive movement because that is how you develop power, and developing power is generally better than hypertrophy unless you’re specifically training for hypertrophy (i.e. bodybuilding).
