This is a brief demonstration of two aspects of the internal tape drive of the IBM 5110. The mechanism is essential the same for the IBM 5100 and also for the external tape unit (known as the IBM 5106). The first aspect is an "x-ray" view of how the cassette tape is inserted and what happens inside to allow the head to contact with the tape (by having the tape control card and corresponding connector removed). The second aspect is the operation of the belt and select-magnets that actuate the forward/reverse movement of the tape. Note that the metal enclosure around the tape head has been removed just to make it easier to identify the head.
