IBM 5110 Interactive Star PALM and internal QIC tape capability presentation (VCCC2022)

Ғылым және технология

This is a capability demonstration of the IBM 5100 and IBM 5110 systems from 1975/1978. The demonstration uses a VCCC2022 "Christmas Star" entry as a reference example and presents some updates to the 5110VEMU emulator (broader disassembly, pre-load binary from command line).
PART 1
00:16 D.I.Y. PALM machine code entry
01:15 Saving machine code to tape
01:43 Loading machine code from tape
01:58 Review of the machine code

Greetings! As you are one of a few people who actually use 5110, I want to ask if I see a blank plane on the cassette slot, does that mean it is a Model2 5110? What is the major difference between model 1 and 2 except the cassette drive and APL/Basic?

The internal cassette drive is really the only difference between Type 1 and Type 2 (or "Model 2"). So yes, a blank tab cover where the cassette drive would normally go means a Type2/Model 2. And you can't just add a cassette drive to the system - the BaseIO card (next to the internal processor) will lack the hardware needed to drive the cassette. The Type2/Model2 was really meant to be used with the newer (at the time) disk drive system, OR it was meant to be used as a terminal into another IBM mainframe system (using some communication cards).
