IBM 5100 PALM demo to display character symbols using DCP

Ғылым және технология

This is a demonstration on how to enable the DCP (Diagnostic Control Program) of the IBM 5100, then use it to enter a brief PALM machine code sequence of instructions. This program displays the full set of characters built into the display card and projected onto the CRT.
Also showing how key presses are processed in the Level 3 interrupt and scan code results stored in registers, which can be read as memory offsets.
NOTE: This video is a practice to a longer upcoming video about the tape unit (in terms of lighting and avoiding glare on the screen and how to show both the screen and what keys are being pressed).
The program that was entered is described in greater detail at the following link:

Apparently you ALSO have IBM 5110s...your computer lab is truly a magical place. Seriously! Please do some narration and explanation in your videos, we welcome this!

I typically record these at night while everyone else is asleep, so I don't get to do "real time" narration (for the sake of just keeping things quiet). We have no idea how much longer these systems will run, so I tend to just always record while using them. I'll add some cc comments to try to clarify a few things. I am working on a longer video of the IBM 5100, to show how the tape-file system works (and more features of the DCP, where you can save/load contents of RWS/RAM to tape) -- I'll try to make that one a narrated version before the upload.

YOU have an IBM 5100! This is VERY cool...those machines are now VERY hard to get ahold of. How long have you had it? How did you acquire it?

We don't have IBM sales numbers, but the estimate is between 5000 to 30,000 units (of both 5100 and 5110 combined, not each) were ever built (this is from CORE newsletters, which was a prominent retailer of IBM related peripheral accessories). This makes them about as rare as SOL-20s (which also only had about 20k-25k sold). And absolutely, to find one in full working condition took a lot of patience. The journey started at one of the consignment shops during one of the VCF West one-weekend-only event and meeting folks who worked at IBM.

@@ForgottenMachines I haven't finished the "cc" commentary yet, but in the Description of the video I've added some links (the last link is more details of how this 5100 was found); may need to press "More..." to expand the Description. But the quick answer is "within the past year" :)

3M or Verbatim DC-6150 tapes should work (it's what I've been using). But, the newest of those tapes is from maybe mid-1990s, so even un-opened they are still quite old (and some of them I have opened brand new and they still won't work reliably - for example: out of a pack of 10, maybe only 6 work). I don't know any shop that is still making those tapes.

@@user-cf7to8zv3x Well it is confusing when it says 150MB capacity. The capacity depends on what system the tape is being used in and how it stores data. Those DC tapes were used in some external storage solutions throughout the 1980s. But on the IBM 5100, the tape runs "continuously" at a high speed with a clutch to actually engage read/write - in other words, it is not the most compact or efficient use of the tape media (but it is relatively fast and reliable as far as small tapes go). Anyway, my point is: I tested this, those DC 6150 tapes as used on the IBM 5100/5110 can only store about 420KB (so they are actually 600ft of tape, or double the capacity that the original IBM DC-300 tapes could hold; recall they were rated to hold about 207KB even in the original IBM manuals).

16KB memory (2x8KB). On the lower right of the screen is "12000" (approx) bytes remaining. The system code consumes about 4KB of RWS, so 12KB is the normal remaining available memory for a 16KB configuration.
