    One of the most forgotten and under appreciated games ever made. So there was a "ZSave" option on the original? I never beat it as a kid. It was only some years ago when I found an emulator with autosave that I was able to go through and beat it. Those scorpions got me every time! So quick!

  • @voidstar1337
    @voidstar133728 күн бұрын

    Yep, Appendix C of the original manual is all about ZSAVE. You could even name your saved games. The code of the game is exactly 8KB (the initials of one of the developers is the last two bytes), but the runtime of the game needs a bit of RAM to function, so the game still requires a 16KB RAM system. And true, I think it was mostly under appreciated in how they did the audio effects with a 6-bit DAC. Combined with the torch and endurance (heartbeat) mechanic - many games have time limits, but I've yet to see one that has a reason for the time limit (that is, integrating into the gameplay a natural time limit due to just running out of resources-- and yet, the game could still technically be beaten without a torch). For all the fancy modern gaming, and yet every dungeon is just miraculously illuminated.

    Couple Qs: What's causing the flicker on the right edge, and what's that display on top of the speaker?

  • @voidstar1337
    @voidstar13373 ай бұрын

    It's a "CPU Utilization" graph, an idea borrowed from the prior Caliope player. It might only appear in VGA output, as I think there were some tricks to drawing that far to the edge (but I could be wrong). The little LED display is from TechDungeon, I'll add a note about it in the Description.

  • @mortarmopp3919

    Odd. The "graph" simply appears as a flickering line that seems to keep time with the music.

    Added more time offset stuff in the description to more easily get to the other demo'd titles. Top down racing isn't for everyone, but the "zoom in/out" scaling this one does is interesting. A kind of Pole Position remake would be great, someday!

    So um, I'm the girl who made the song at 3:37. I think you got the name confused, because that one name's actually is "Melody of Certain Feelings" and it was originally named MELODY.ZSM, meanwhile the song called "Feelings I Usually Keep Inside" is a different one altogether and that's the one meant to be FEELING.ZSM. I did provide the ZSM files for the later to the person who made the Melodius program so i wonder why the song names ended up being mixed up x . x

  • @voidstar1337
    @voidstar13373 ай бұрын

    I was experimenting with other ZSMs players and some of them didn't support long filenames. So I had to adjust those to 8.3 filenames and since Melodius sorts alphabetically I wanted them in a specific order. The original names were spelled out (long filenames) in both the ones you mentioned. And at some point I swapped between the two titles and forgot to update the description. So just a mix up in preparing a demo and testing the system with multiple players.

    you should do a climb up survival. galdrogs on level 2 and live to tell about it 👍

  • @mikepadget9777
    @mikepadget97773 ай бұрын

    strategic hack is to climb up from 3 to 2 after defeating everything BUT the wizard's image and take everything with you. climb up to level 2 using the vision scroll to find a long dead end and drop everything but a few things like hale flasks (never under any circumstances should you ever use an abye flask) then wait for the enemies. by the time you get through, the wizards image is eliminated with a single ring hit and the galdrogs on level four are easy peasy 👍

  • @voidstar1337
    @voidstar133728 күн бұрын

    @@mikepadget9777 I think from reverse engineering the code, someone did determine that it's true, the abye flask had no benefit. But I view it differently: being able to down an abye flask is a signal that you're ready to move to the next level of the dungeon.

    3M or Verbatim DC-6150 tapes should work (it's what I've been using). But, the newest of those tapes is from maybe mid-1990s, so even un-opened they are still quite old (and some of them I have opened brand new and they still won't work reliably - for example: out of a pack of 10, maybe only 6 work). I don't know any shop that is still making those tapes.

  • @voidstar1337
    @voidstar13377 ай бұрын

    @@user-cf7to8zv3x Well it is confusing when it says 150MB capacity. The capacity depends on what system the tape is being used in and how it stores data. Those DC tapes were used in some external storage solutions throughout the 1980s. But on the IBM 5100, the tape runs "continuously" at a high speed with a clutch to actually engage read/write - in other words, it is not the most compact or efficient use of the tape media (but it is relatively fast and reliable as far as small tapes go). Anyway, my point is: I tested this, those DC 6150 tapes as used on the IBM 5100/5110 can only store about 420KB (so they are actually 600ft of tape, or double the capacity that the original IBM DC-300 tapes could hold; recall they were rated to hold about 207KB even in the original IBM manuals).

The point of doing all of this is to make other people realize that these new 8-bit computers are not just for gaming. I am hoping someone will also make office apps for them, like at least a simple word processor & spreadsheet, & then able to print to a printer, whether it's an impact (dotmatrix), laser or inkjet printer. And so forth & so on. The same should be said of the Foenix retro PC & not just for the X16.

I haven't yet come across a PS/2 keyboard that doesn't work on the X16 (tried about 9 different brands of them). (the one I used in this video is the same brand as the one that is included - Perixx)
