I looked this topic up because I’ve been thinking lately: if curly hair is the driest hair type, why are we told to avoid watering it everyday? We’re encouraged to moisturize with oil, but dry hair needs hydration. That only comes from water. If our bodies are dehydrated, do we drink a bottle of oil or a bottle of water? Just random thoughts I’ve been having about this. So thanks for talking about it.

that’s not how it works. when we say moisture we don’t mean actual moisture. we mean conditioning. the reason curly hair is considered drier is because it tends to be high porosity and have less sebum on it both of these properties let moisture ESCAPE, and that’s why it’s “dry”. if your hair is dry don’t put more water on it, instead focus on sealing the cuticles and sealing in the moisture that’s already there. scalp however does need frequent washing, a clean scalp = healthy scalp = healthy hair

@lambsauce8937 you're partially correct. I'd would advise those with curly/kinky hair to wash more AND seal their cuticles to keep that moisture. The scalp needs to be cleaned regularly with water and the hair needs the moisture from water. If the hair is highly porous then the moisture can only return on wash days so adding more wash days increases the moisture in the hair

I started daily washing this year, took a min to find the right shampoo and condish but this is THE best black hair care secret. @@amateurastronomer9752 Yessssss to everything you’ve said! 🙌🏾 I think we’ve been lied to our whole lives. It doesn’t dry our hair and scalp out nor makes our hair brittle. It make our hair stronger, add a ton of body w/ a lot of movement, promotes crazy growth, smells sooooo good, makes it thicker, less tangling, etc. The daily washing changed my hair texture too over a period of time…it’s straighter. Btw, my hair is natural (no chemicals and dyes. We as black people has to clean our scalp pores just like the finer hair textures on a daily basis in order to obtain the best out of our hair. I know it brings out the best in mine.

I’m so glad I watched this because I decided to make this change last year and started washing my hair daily, sometimes I’ll skip a day if I’m busy but usually everyday then putting coconut oil in my damp hair and let me tell you for the first time in my life my hair has grown past my shoulders and I see clearly the growth every month! Love it and never changing back!!!… also they say that we must wear protective hairstyles to help our hair grow, i STOPPED doing that and leaving my hair out on a stay at home day or i tie it in a bun loosely for outings and my hair breakage has reduced immensely. I also trim my ends every 3 months so this has really worked well for me.

The results leaves my hair healthy, and bouncy. I wash my hair 3 times a week, once a week deep condition, and once a month clarifying, i also cut my dead ends off which helps with the growth, and the bounce. I have decided to try this and I have been co-washing everyday and I must say my hair is much more moisturized, less shedding and breakage. Detangling with a widetooth comb or finger detangling, use a conditioner with a lot of slip. I think the misconception comes in with African American ethnic women that we aren't able to wash Co wash daily because we are assuming that is going to break or strip our hair, but if you detangle properly let it air-dry leave in conditioner and may be seal with the oil and you can do clarify shampoo once a week to remove the build-up and deep-condition. This has helped me. For reference I have 3C 4A 4B low porosity medium density fine textured hair. At night I do about three jumbo twist and tie my hair up with a 100% silk scarf.

People should do what works for them. I’m black/Cherokee with 4c hair. I personally don’t wash my hair everyday, because I don’t think it’s necessary. I may do a water only rinse if I’m sweating or under a lot of stress. I co wash mid week/one week prior to wash day week. But usually this is three weeks after my last wash day that I do these in between cleanses. my wash days are every three weeks on a schedule, because I calendar when I need to do my next protein treatment. I cannot fathom doing a wash routine everyday and incorporate 30 min deep conditioning and trying to squeeze in a day to do a protein treatment--then, applying the LOC method to begin the styling process. My products will empty fast! I think It’s too excessive on my hair strands personally, and definitely would cause more harm than anything good. I deep condition every wash day so a wash routine for me has to make sense and serve a valid purpose.

Is anyone doing this lately? I’ve been interested in washing my hair everyday, but I don’t know what to do afterwards… How do you moisturize your hair afterwards? How do you dry it? Do you leave it wet? How do you go to bed and take care of it when you wake up? I want to start wearing my hair out more, but I don’t know what else to do with it after washing except putting it up in a couple braids (my hairs really curly, and I struggle with a lot of fairy knots and splits). Any insight? I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now.

Is it even possible to wet 4 type hair every day, I’m talking about 4a,4,b and 4c types? Maybe it just depends on your porosity which is how fast your hair drys idk I think I’ll try this experiment, with my 4 type hair but just wetting it everyday or every other day and then putting oils after just to see if my hair can actually benefit from it.

If you ask any swimmer with type 4 hair, they’ll tell shampooing daily doesn’t damage hair. The opposite of dryness is water, not oil. Hair receives the most water when it’s cleaned. It’s just facts. When I first big chopped, between working out and swimming daily, I either cowashed or shampooed with zero issues. If anything detangling was easier and quicker. The only reason I stopped is because I was using too many products to style and as my hair got longer it took longer and longer to dry. Now that I only use one styler and a light leave in, I’m able to go back to washing every couple of days. I probably won’t go back to daily unless I cut my hair.

@@denyshadials5702 You're right it's very time-consuming to wash your hair every 1 once a week and then moisturize it after, iv been doing that without shampoo for 2 weeks and boyy I'm tired of it already, so for the type of lifestyle I have I think I should just wet my hair every 2 weeks and then style and re-moisturize, Before I usually just leave it alone for 2 months at a time, not doing anything to it, just leaving it in my twist and spritzing it with water and cream probably every 2 weeks throughout that time, but since iv been wetting my twist with water and actually truly moisturizing it, I find it feels a lot softer and less dry. So it's probably ok to wet your hair more often than many people with type 4 hair think, I used to be hesitant to wet my hair more often because I didn't want hydral-fatigue, (and I don't like going to bed with a wet head lol). knowing this now, I think a better routine for me would be washing it with shampoo every 2 weeks and wetting it with water every 1 once a week, that's what iv been doing and so far and it's working!!! my hair's not dry at all, as long as I moisturize it well after. I'd even go far enough to say that I don't even need deep conditioner doing this routine!!! (since I haven't been using one since I shampooed it, its still moisturized because of the fact that I'm wetting it more often).

4c girlie here! Daily hair routine: wash with shampoo, silicone free conditioner for a few minutes, finger detangle (nothing too intricate, since I wash daily, shed hairs, come out easily), spray some Aussie leave in, little bit of ecostyler all over. Shake it out. Blow dry for a few minutes on low heat just to get rid of excess/dripping water and get some airflow to the roots. Go about my day as it air dries. I don’t wash in sections, I don’t detangle with a brush/comb and I don’t stretch while blow drying. This saves me a lot of time and the whole process takes about 20 min. If you can accept your shrinkage and natural texture (though my curl pattern pops moreso than before), this is the way to go. My hair is softer and looks way better now than with any other method I’ve tried and I’ve tried them all. I’d like add I have very dense hair. I hear thinner hair may tangle more easily.

I started washing it more often because I am more physically active now throughout the week and I have to or else my scalp will be irritated from leaving sweat and dirt on it. It used to take me an hour to detangle my hair and now it only takes 10 minutes because I talked to a natural hairstylist who told me to switch my conditioner and to use a more gentle hydrating shampoo for frequent washing. I think because I’m getting it wet more frequently it’s making the process faster also. And my hair doesn’t take forever to dry because I bought a hooded dryer that gets it 75% dry when I sit under it for 30 mins and I let it air dry on its own the rest of the day. @@ChesireWaltz no. I think hormones, age, diet plays a part in it as well. But I don’t have time to wash daily. I also have realized I’m protein sensitive. Which has caused breakage on my hair. I now have been trying to use protein free products and my hair seems to be improving.

Well it’s because it strips your hair off moisture that causes damage... well that’s me personally. Even if I replenish it with oils the oils aren’t in long enough to actually make a difference. My hair would just fall out honestly

Mac Loca yeah! It takes way too much work for me. I only shampoo 1 or 2 a week, and condition, and Detangle every time I shower (every other day).

I am experiencing the same, tried 3 times weekly and once weekly. Both frequencies still had lots of breakage. I am about to try twice monthly to see what happens.

Cowash causes terrible buildup. Companies didn't create conditioner for washing. Do you skip taking showers because the soap strips your skin on oil? No, you just use lotion. Just use conditioner after shampooing.

When I first went natural I washed my hair 3 to 2 times a week and my hair was always stripped and I couldn't figure out why, until my mom and aunt told me to stop washing it a lot, and that's not even a everyday thing and it damaged my hair, I stopped washing my hair like that and started Wash my hair once to every 2 weeks and my hair was so much better, the feeling of my hair wasn't so stripped anymore.

i wash my hair every 3 days and I think that's too often. I'm going to try to wash my hair twice a month. when I was my hair often. it's too dry and takes a lot of product to get it back pliable and at a proper moisture level. which in turn equals a lot of manipulation and breakage all over the bathroom.

Same here, I tried washing 3 times a week, then weekly but not frequencies came with so much breakage for me and no length retention. I am about to try twice a month now.

@@hubb52424c hair with very low porosity should not be washing hair daily with shampoo, I have had Mang licensed hair stylists tell me, not to and they are right. Rice and oats cream shampoo is the best for 4c hair.
