Washing curly hair everyday for a week. I do something I don't know if I have ever done and that is wash my hair 7 days in a row. Each washday you will see how I maintain a healthy scalp without over cleansing it, how I balance protein and moisture and how I prevent damage throughout the week. I will discuss the good and the bad and provide tips for those that want or need to cleanse their hair daily.

Such a fantastic video. I was dying at your exhaustion... thanks for taking one for the team! ;-) I am curious if you were to redo the hell of 7 days washing, what it'd do if you kept with the exact same products each time. I'm also curious about night vs day washing but I'm new to you so maybe you've talked to that. I feel like there should be (post Pandemic) some mega curly hair in person conference. We are a big economic force! :)

I am so happy you made this video!!!!!!! My hair had been so damaged from the lack of moisture from not washing my hair everyday! Flash back to 4 years ago I bleached my hair, it was beautiful and I love it but I could not wash my hair every day because it was so hard to brush even with product! So I only washed my hair once to twice a week and my hair was breaking so bad and I couldn’t figure it out! I tried everything!!!!!! Different products, different techniques, but I didn’t try to wash my hair everyday (like I used to) because I thought that would make it dryer. But no my hair is so much healthier from washing everyday!!!! I have fine low porosity 2a 2b hair. Also I only use salon products!

I have occipital neuralgia, so washing my thick, long and curly hair is a lot of work every day, but it makes me feel so much better with washing my scalp and getting warm water on my overactive nerves on my head. Washing my scalp every day makes a huge difference with my migraines. I have to use a lot of product, but I live in AZ, so my hair dries pretty quickly and it keeps me cool in this very dry heat!

I generally wash every other day but that doesn't necessarily mean shampooing. Sometimes I cowash or just rinse. My scalp starts to itch by the end of day 2 or beginning of day 3. My hair is in good condition and otherwise has no problems. My dermatologist said I should wash as often as I felt I needed to. As long as I wasn't losing clumps of hair or my scalp wasn't inflamed. Although I am glad I don't usually have to every day. That is a lot of work.

Do you find when you rinse with water your hair gets built up easier?? I have a very dry scalp too, but if I do oils my hair looks greasy so I can only do it as a pre-poo, even though my hair would like it to be a daily thing lol. I've been thinking about rinsing more often too though.

I have 2c-3a curls and I was washing everyday just because of the oils. I’ve stretched it to 2-2.5 days. I love having fresh curls that I can wear down. My 2nd day hair isn’t cooperating yet. For the first time in 32 years, I actually love my natural hair. I used to tie my hair in a bun every single day of my life in my school years. It was so unmanageable. I also had no access to the information that’s so readily available now. I’m too excited to get my natural curls to their full potential to wear my hair in a bun anymore 😁

Thank you, Jannelle!!! I have 2a-3a hair and I tend to wash it every day because it is so fine that every single time I've ever tried to refresh my hair, it gets so tangled, frizzy, and dry that I end up just having to wash it. I hate having to do this because it takes so much time and energy, but I've literally tried so many ways of refreshing, and just none of them work. You wouldn't think someone's hair would be even drier if they didn't wash it, because it's counterintuitive, but I find that maybe washing it puts moisture back into it or something? Because my ends are so dry, but they always look better if my hair is washed. If I skip a day or two of washing my hair, I just have to put it up in a ponytail, and because of the fine density, that sort of destroys any curls that were there before, but I still do that a lot because it's a lot of work to do a full wash day every day.

I have just FINALLY stopped washing my hair everyday. I tried to break the daily wash habit off and on for years. In the last 4 months or so, I finally broke the habit, figuring out exactly what to do so my curls looked nice without daily washing. My hair was thinning due to too much washing. Now I wash on day 3, or sometimes every other day. I found when I tried to make it to day 4 it was not good. The 3rd day is my sweet spot.

Jannelle, that was a lot of work for you. Thanks for that. For years I washed my baby fine curls everyday because I didn't know how to apply products in a way that I get another day or two. Also, having such fine hair makes it harder. I am getting better with this and can actually go 2 or 3 days. For me, it's all about the styling products that I apply after washing. Too much and I have to wash them out next day. Not enough, the same. I just tried a line that has been redone, called Alaffia. I only used the curl defining gel for wavy to curly hair, and I was really happy with results. Today is day 4, and I could go longer without washing, but I need to because of my schedule coming up. Very low priced also. Only thing...none of their products contain protein and my hair likes protein.

I’ve always had scalp issues since I was a baby. I had bad itchy dandruff and my mother always told me dandruff was a dry scalp. Turns out it’s an oily scalp. I used to use medicated shampoo to deal with it. I came to realize that daily washing solved the problem entirely. Even every other day washing makes my roots and scalp feel gross and start to itch and smell. Then I have to shampoo twice to get the excess oils out. I’ve heard other curlies say they shampoo twice on their wash day. It’s my opinion that shampooing twice every other day is the same as shampooing once every day. I use natural products (like proper natural, not just the sulfate free stuff that is still filled with chemicals). It took years to find natural products that worked for my hair. The brand I use is Oneka. I shampoo in the shower, then I apply the conditioner as though it’s a leave-in. I find that allows it to moisturize all day and not just washing it out. It also helps control frizz. My biggest problem though is that my well water is super hard. I’ve been trying some of the curly girl method this past week and it’s only been making my hair more frizzy. Also, a lot of the products for curly hair aren’t actually natural. They say they are “clean” but they are still mostly just chemicals.

I noticed with my hair that, when I gently get all knots out of my hair every night b4 bedtime, when it's time for me to do my wash routine for my hair, then hardly any ever falls out & trust me, I used to lose too much hair then desired... Please try this on a video, as you will be amazed & have more hair on your head... Now when I detangle & I come to a knOt that seems impossible, I then "gently work upwards on the strands, instead of going just downwards". My hair is low porosity & I sometimes get many of them evil suckers, so there has been times I put a drop of Argan oil, Rose hip seed oil or Jojoba oil & this has helped me... I was my hair every 5-7 days, depending on IF my head is itching, then I do my natural overnight mask, then wake up, eat, take meds, then washing routine begins... Great video as always, thank you Jannelle, hugs. 😘 🌹🌈💞🎵🌷🌺🌼🌸😆👏👍💫🌟✌ 💛 ☘️ ☘️~"1 & all please take care of you & for others that need you through all these difficult trying times"~ 😘 ~"Love, Hope, Peace, Kindness, Dreams, Inspiration, Laughter, Joy, Give, Live & Let Live"~

This doesn't happen to everyone, but while in "transition", if I applied gel with aloe on my damp/wet hair, I'd get flashdrying. It feels like a ton of water pours out & your hair suddenly feels dry and rough. Also causes wet frizz, which means your end result will be frizzy too. Its very common on highly porous hair or if your hair doesn't have enough moisture (or is imbalanced). Hope this helps! 😊

When you say that you scrunched in your leave in conditioner, do you mean that you don’t wash the leave in conditioner fully out, before you style it with gel? That doesn’t leave your hair feeling heavy?

It’s called leave in conditioner because you’re supposed to leave it in. You don’t wash it out till your next wash day

I don’t use a lot, just gently tap my fingers on the top and that is typically more then enough for me! My video on how I fix protein overload, which I uploaded 2 weeks ago, I use the product and show how I apply and how much if you’d like a visual!

Tina Cross ohhh yeah is definitely try with wayyyy less! I use so little of most products for the same reason, fine/medium density. My hair gets weighed down way too fast and panics 😂

I washed my hair every day for five days in a row and I totally over moisturized my hair. I was using bouncecurl products and I kept trying new techniques and my hair hated it all and hated the wash everyday . The most I can do is 3x a week. It’s an issue for me because of Covid and I see patients . I don’t work w Covid patients but I work in healthcare and I feel like I want to wash my hair but when I do too much it kills my hair

I think the only time hair would actually enjoy so much moisture every day is if you’re a swimmer and pool chemicals strip all the moisture out. Hopefully you don’t have to continue with daily washes for too much longer.

Maybe switching to less moisturizing products would be better? If you use them everyday you might be able to get away with lighter moisture.

That was my biggest worry! Especially because we had a few really rainy days that week so it was moisture everywhere. I kept it pretty balanced which I was super surprised by!!!

u can get hydral fatigue from washing your hair too much?

  • @DicedTomato41

Yes it's possible if the hair absorbs water easily. If hygral fatigue happens, a protein treatment might be a good idea.
