I used my phone UNDERWATER! This is what happened 😥

Ғылым және технология

I think "water proof" phones are splash and dunk proof but using them underwater is begging for trouble. The Blackview BV8800 in this video is certainly no exception! I think 1ft or less might be safe(ish)?

They should use case mounted speakers and microphones that work using induction instead of direct connect. That would prevent water from getting past them.

Working in the materials industry, my guess is the IP waterproof/resistant rating is done with DI or fresh water. I can almost guarentee that its definitely not tested for pool or salt water because of their corrosivity. Glad to see you cover this!

Can you explain, please, where the logic link is between corrosivity of pool water and its higher ability to enter the phone in comparison to fresh (tap?) water?

There is no such thing as deionized water once it contacts energized circuits. It gets ionic contamination from galvanic action almost immediately. It may just take longer than with pool or salt water, the end effect is identical.

Yet more renewed interest in this video, to watch you explore a phone and how to tear it out. For once not knowing by heart how do do it. This feeling is so familiar to all of us who've once tried to disassemble a phone. Except you do it right, you have this huge experience that tells you where the screws, the clips and the connectors are, and you have the exact right gesture. Us, we keep searching for a while scratching our heads: how does this bloody thing come out?... In a way, it was comforting to see that you too can break something during the tear out. Another very familiar situation to all of us. Except that you know how to put it back and have the tools for this... Great video. Thanks.

I believe the "hole" under the cameras is the pressure sensor not a mic. That would explain the membrane sensitivity... It would be nice to do the same test on the s98 since that one doesnt have that. Maybe it would be "more" waterproof/water-resistant. Also i couldnt find any teardowns for that model... Would be nice to see whats inside and the build mode. Anyway nice video.

I will say. back when i was a leak detection specialist. I had an older ulephone armor 7 or something. and i used it quite a bit for an entire summer as an underwater camera documenting structural leaks in pools/water parks and such. and it never had any issues. After seeing this, if i do get one of these phones. i will probably just use that old one as my underwater camera.

Water pressure at one foot of depth is .443 psi, so at five feet, you have 2.165 psi. Apparently that's enough to blow through that microphone membrane. Phone is probably only waterproof at the surface. Purchase a GoPro for great underwater video. Have a great 4th.

Paused at 2:45: When I heard the clicking sound I was thinking it was bubbles of air popping out of the microphone opening/grid, and the most likely reason for that to happen is that air is replaced/displaced with something else, which in this case may be water.

Fortunately my yard wont fit one so I might be saved on that expense. haha :) Thanks again for the videos! BTW are you using the Quick for all your hot air needs? I was trying to move around a Metric 01005 and Metric 0201 with my Quick and it was blowing all over the place at 1% air flow. To small to hold down without moving it at all. I was able to get lucky with enough flux and holding it far enough away but I am not sure I could do that again without another hour of fiddling around for each one. Getting quite frustrated while dealing with each one, cant even flip them around easily and every once in awhile trying to move them around they definitely go flying into the nether! Also, Any idea why in the heck they use the same numbers for metric *and* Imperial for different sizes of each?!?!? My goodness that is frustrating!! Thanks for the videos!

It's interesting that they went backwards with the construction design 🤔 my bv9800 pro has the microphone glued in to the bottom of the frame on the left side of the charger port so there's no way water can get through, everything that goes to the exterior of the frame from Factory is sealed with white sealant the only thing that wasn't glued was the speaker which had a foam seal around it but since I replaced my screen after smashing it I used 1215 threebond sealant on speaker, microphone , charger port. They done so well on the bv9800 but went backwards on the bl8800 I guess this sums up I will be getting another tried and proven bv9800 as a replacement. Btw when you get a replacement screen get the one that's already pre installed in to the frame for the small difference in price it will save you a lot of hassle because you can just swap everything straight over.

SAME PROBLEM, but I really don't deserve it! I have the same model, I loved it and I never took it for a swim. My earpiece got really quiet and I tried to wash it. A streem of water didn't work so I placed it in a bowl of water to soak it. 10 minutes and it was all wet inside. I turned it off, took appart and dried over a fireplace for over 5 hours. My screen went bad in the same fashion as yours, you didn't brake it. Today I took the display off and took a look under a microscope all around the circuits. I do mot see any water damage on any component or a trace, the damage must be internal to the screen. I am waiting for the followup.

I have a Samsung Galaxy J4(2018) which has no ratings at all but it has survived numerous drops, full-scale thundershowers in which I got drenched but except for one occasion the phone actually to me it was going to shut down so that I could give it time to dry because some water had gotten into the charge port. Note, I said the charge port not the microphone... For a device with no ratings and a supposed waterproof device there's no comparison.

Electronic devices and water don’t do well together, no device is water “proof”, water resistant at best. I wouldn’t dare to risk my phone anyway. I guess things are easier here in europe where the customers is protected by some consumer law. If an waterproof phone is leaking, then it's not the consumers issue (new phone or money back). I would stay away from China devices. Try to hock it up to some sniffer /network analyzer. Wouldn't surprise me if it connect to some Chinese server on a regular basis and push up some snapshot of your file index, position data, contacts, phone calls, sms, etc. My last China android device did that (back in 2013 maybe) . (Was implemented in the Linux kernel ). But China have gotten a lot of criticism from governments, and telecom companies have boycotted em because of this (the attitude towards the consumers privacy) , so it may have changed now 🤷‍♂️.

A couple years ago on a Christmas Day I was cleaning the screen off on my IPhone 11 and it ended up in the toilet (clean bowl) I didn’t think twice I grabbed it out right away figured we’ll it’s already wet I rinsed it off in the sink Lysol wiped it down and was still using it till my daughter wrecked her phone now she’s using it I got lucky on that one it still works infact I had to use her phone yesterday cause my iPhone 13 kept dropping calls (8 in a row) it’s only a month old hopefully it’s not a common thing and doesn’t continue to happen

So, im not gonna lie lol, ive repaired phones before and I trust mine (iPhone 13 Pro Max) it isn't marketed to be "waterproof" it is though marketed to be water resistant up to 3 meters for 30 minutes, I have tested this and it is indeed true, ive seen no signs of moisture intrusion, but I also don't actively submerge it on a regular basis, I will leave it out in the rain for cool weather Timelapses but that's about it, its only been in the pool twice and that was for maybe a minute or 2 of filming total. Only reason I trust my phone is because ive seen how they've sealed it and was impressed.

It is a new phone, the only thing that prevent water form going in a glue, witch is about 1mm thick near the face ID, Glue with time will crack and seal will be lost (after about a year, year and half).

ya, the sound is the air bubbles escaping and that air space being filled with H20. PS- Every time you use a metal screwdriver to pop connectors I cringe and pucker.... dear lord you're a MONSTER!! PS again- Ever put your phone in a plastic bag and used it? it works fine, why don't they just use a plastic actual waterproof membrane? It still transfers sound vibration but not water..

Doesnt matter.......is they say its ip68 or even ip69 rated, at least you expect it will be as good as any other phone with this rating. I had samsungs, oneplus etc phones with ip68 rating, and they did fine under water. Of course not for hours, but taking a photo or video was never a problem. Yes, you are right.....phones arent for underwater usage, but this is just crap, specially for a rugged phone like this with 2 ip ratings. regards.....
