I Used a Fake Identity to Enter a Miniature Painting Competition! :-)
Ойын-сауық
Resin Beast is one of the mini painting competitions at Adepticon, and I decided to enter! I get recognized at this convention pretty often... so I thought it would be sporting to enter the competition under a pseudonym: Bert Mabers, the Painting Wizard :-) The competition allows models from 4 different companies: Creature Caster, Bestiarum Games, Eldritch Foundry, and Parabellum (Conquest The Last Argument of Kings). I chose a model from Conquest TLAOK...

I appreciate that at 15:43 you opted to not self-deprecate, and instead used the opportunity to emphasize the value of contributing to a community! I know when people do the first route it’s often with the intent of highlighting the real standouts of the competition, but IMO talking down your own work in such a context has the opposite effect and can devalue the effort of your competitors. It’s a small thing for sure, but I’m always glad to see the different ways your positive approach to hobbying can make our space a better one :)

The end result is very cool. Perhaps (tentatively) you could set a shelf aside and now and again do a hobby project which is aiming to consolidate/push your skills or just symbolises a landmark in your journey; mount each on a plinth then at some point you can look along and admire them and remember the story. While it's clear you know what you like, and it's entirely reasonable to admit you don't want to be a painting superstar, I think many viewers might enjoy seeing you taking on some challenges to level up your skills on painting, basing, dioramas (even if you ultimately choose to pick up more simple projects again). Either way, your videos are really cool too so please keep up the good work - a second video in short succession was a real bonus this week :)

I really appreciate your super chilled, friendly approach to your videos. And kudos on the mini, looked great. I teach in a university, and what you say about grading is spot on. I sometimes catch myself out, and have another teacher second grade a submission, if I feel I was a bit too generous/harsh for reasons other than the quality of the work.

This is the coolest video I've watched in a long time. I love the idea. I love that Lyla picked you immediately. I love that Bert/Burt showed that sprue minis aren't stock minis.
I love that your supervisor keeps popping in to check your progress.

It was greating catching up for a few minutes with you Brent. The pieces in the case this year were stunning!
The people are clamouring for more BERT! LOL
Amazing job, and a great video! I do have a little bit of critical feedback on the miniature too. The miniature was phenomenal, but I would have liked to see a little more color variation in the brickeword. A slight tan, a faint gray-red, just something to break up the surface. Fantastic job as always, you actively inspire me to be more positive about my own work, while still being able to see the flaws.
Lyla's laugh was awesome! Great video!

agreed! I couldn't think of a good color to make it that would make it more visible without pulling focus... In the movie the whole scene is pretty much just black, so that didn't really help...
Great video Brent. Love the sprue steps idea. So easy, yet elegant
I honestly think it was a good idea to do the disguise, if only so you can remove a possible influence factor from biasing an independent study. If Alex Eisner hands you a physics formula, you're likely to review it a lot harder than if Albert Einstein hands you the same thing.
@GoobertownHobbies
Ай бұрын
oh I think there's a real conversation to be had about influence in ANY competition that involves subjective judgement. Obviously the winners here are phenomenally talented and hard-working, but anonymity does make things easier and cleaner for the judges. In this case each entry got assigned a number (mine was #72) and it seemed like a pretty good system.
Fun video, loved Lyla's reaction though.

So one of the cool things they talk about over on the grimdark compendium is using different kinds of varnish to paint with texture, when you were talking about the battle of helms deep I thought that you were going to use a speckling of ultragloss to simulate the drops of rain hitting the stone, maybe mixed in with some very dilute black or blue ink.

Brent, really cool video as always ! I think it's a pretty healthy experience to attend to one or 2 contests once in a while, it helps growing as minipainter, gives tons of opportunity to get incredible inspiration and also get reviews on our work :) I attended 6 contests since I started minipainting 2 years ago, and won 3 times. Of course these were local and amateur contests, but still, it's a very rich experience to have under out belts^^ Congrats for giving it a shot, and hope you'll try another one when you fancy it ;) Cheers from France !

This was great! I love that you were able to use old sprue for the base. I’ve been using it to elevate models in place of layers of cork, especially if it’s just going to get covered with putty/texture paste anyways. Your model looks great, especially considering the time crunch you were under! 🤘🤘It was great getting a chance to chat with you at the con too! Apologies to everyone’s eyes for my love handle sneaking through in ceremony clip. At least it didn’t seem to throw off the white balance on your camera. 🤣🤣🤣

You made such a cool model. I suddenly felt the same child-like wonder that I did looking at 'Eavy Metal model photos back in the 90s.
i love this, i do wish you had the time to do something with the back arm to make it look more like he was reaching for the next arrow, but that's a small nitpick that doesnt affect the final opinion. Beautiful work for the time you put in, the shield and hair adjustment really serve to illustrate movement, and the colour composition really works for a woodsman type character (special shoutout to that orange accent choice, really made the greens pop)
