Guess what team i prefer to coach. ;) - but yeah, Chaos was my way to go too. Mainly due to the variety of models and the freedom of colour choices.

@@amimeebee sadly i never got any lasting opponents to play Blood Bowl with. I love the models from that line, including the new ones. I've scratch built and bought more teams than the amount of games i played.

What a rad combination of ideas. History lesson, painting challenge and a highlight on the female sculpts all jammed together in one fin video.

I built half of my actual ultramarine army with female heads (Statuesque, Stormcast plastic and stormcast heads from forgeworld and some sisters of battle). Easy test: if you are to angry about "the wrong heads" on the made up plastic toys, than I am not willing to play with you. So much less stress.

This is one of the things that drew me to the Imperial Guard. It doesn't matter who or what you are. As long as you can hold a lasgun, can follow orders, and love the Emperor, you're in the Guard!

I noticed, in just the two and a half years ive been in the hobby, there are now more of my fellow girls hanging out at the LHS. When I first started warhammer, right after covid, The only other time I saw another gal in the shop was a wife/gf following her husband around as HE looked at stuff. I know from being the only girl at one point, that coming in to a shop full of dudes can be intimidating. Now, with the new edition launch, We've had 3 or 4 completely new gals show up to paint and build. Its always great to see new faces and create a more welcoming hobby space! :)

I've played WoW and Diablo 3 online with my wife for a couple of years now. I've tried to interest her in Blood Bowl or Necromunda and she's expressed mild interest, but not interested in building and painting minis. So, since we just watched the Barbie Movie Sunday, I'm painting up a Malxbuu Barbizons BB team. Even if she doesn't want to use it, I probably will.

That's an excellent point. I highly doubt that GW is pro or contra inclusion. The only thing they are 100 for is green and Space Marines just sell well. The best way to get more female representation would be simply to get more girls into the Hobby by beeing are more welcoming community.

@@GoobertownHobbies ^This. If you're completely new to Warhammer, you have to _know_ that Sisters of Battle or mixed-gender Guard kits exist. Whereas if you know nothing about Warhammer, you can very easily find the 40K starter boxes (or subdivided starter bundles). THESE products are what a person is most likely to see when they think of starting to collect 40K models. The fact that the starter boxes haven't had a recognizably female or female-coded model in _over twenty years_ is a problem. A woman/girl has a better chance of finding models that she can personally identify with in an Age of Sigmar starter box than a 40K one. Despite 40K being THE most recognizable part of the Warhammer brand.

The Escher Gang kit from Necromunda is very popular among kitbashers, for this very reason. All female sculpts, their punk aesthetic lends itself well to Chaos conversions, and their loadouts are pretty close to the standard cultist loadout options.

I think a starter box that has Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar would be pretty cool. You get the contrast of Hedonistic elves and Holy soldiers, you'd get the wytch cult which is awsome, and the variety you could put in with the sisters would be cool add a few Imperial guard as well I think it would be awsome!! Always excited when I see you've posted a video Brent very nice

@@PainandPastries I put that in the "FOMO battlebox" category. There have been a few of those, but they don't have the influence of something like indomitus. The Warhammer stores weren't running demo games with piety and pain, they were using necrons and space marines

@@PainandPastries my memory is hazy, but I don't remember it being a particularly good deal either...

I remember discovering 40k because my boyfriend at the time played back in 2009-2010. I used to go to Games Workshop and watch him play. The first time I went in, I felt uncomfortable because there were NO women around, but I ended up making so many friends (one of them even paid for my wedding dress when I got married in 2020, lifelong friends now). I would sit around and build Space Marines for the demo models while everyone played, and then I got a whole box of Tyranids to paint. When I got my wisdom teeth out, I remember begging my mom (under heavy medication and not talking properly) to go to geedubs so I could hang out with the guys. We had a whole audience of people cheering for me when I pit my Nids up against his Kreig army and very nearly won (I did not). That guy and I broke up ages ago, but I'll still treasure all those times. I still have all my Tyranids and definitely miss playing. Your videos bring me joy and I appreciate them so much.

Would have loved to have seen Sisters of Battle in the indomitus set, really seems like a missed opportunity to give them some more spotlight. They're one of my favourite factions.

Oh, such a video is actually waaaaay too easy to make! The only hard part was scrounging up artifacts from the various sets ;-)

To be completely fair on the female necron point the necrontyr did have women and several necron characters in books retain more feminine names and voices from their pre metal days.

​@@GoobertownHobbiesThe Infinite and the Divine book has some great necron women! And I think twice dead king too? Not sure, haven't read TDK yet. With that said, 40k books are obviously pretty niche compared to the 40k starter sets, but any small victory is good!

Dark Eldar+Black Templars and Brettonians+Lizardmen--the start of GW's golden era, when the rules weren't overly bloated and the minis were still affordable!

Really like your movies, when I watch them I have feeling that they are made by very positive person who is real passionate of miniature painting.

As fun as the "No Girls Allowed" bit is in this video, there were originally no rules that there couldn't be female Space Marines. There were female Space Marine models in the earliest iteration of the setting, but the boys' club that made up the gaming market didn't buy them, so GW stopped making them. I have no doubt if they made them today, they would sell, and things could change. Games Workshop loves to rewrite their lore, after all.

I think one of my favorite lore tidbits from the Horus Heresy series is this one point where Malcador is chatting with Rogal Dorn. While Dorn is complaining about how most of the brotherhood of primarchs is such a disagreeable bunch, Malcador just casually mentions how he had advised the Emperor to make the primarchs sisters instead of brothers. Dorn takes it as a joke, but Malcador says he's only partly joking. So, there's your canon excuse for genderbent primarch art, people. It totally could have been a thing.

It wouldn't be very realistic to have female minis because women aren't real. Hope this helps

@arlenneylon4755 Birds certainly are real. They are just not alive in the biological sense. What you really need to watch out for are the fish! Birds 'eat' fish...or so the government would have you believe. Fish are our lizard-people overlords in disguise. Travellimg by airplane dries out the lizard-people's skin, so they transfom into fish so 'birds' can carry them in their beaks when our secret masters want to go on vacation. 😜

my biggest problem with the "space marines are warrior monks and sisters of battle are warrior nuns" thing is that sisters of battle dont get to be warrior nuns who are also romans, or vikings, or knights, Mongolians, or blood thirsty barbarians, or plague ridden zombies, or Egyptian sorcerers, or evil bat man, or crazy glamrock girls, or just be in tactical gear. They come with 1 look and just different paint schemes like every faction except space marines, orks and guard do. I want viking sisters of battle on wolves :o

Oh my god, I never realized before but this is EXACTLY my issue with them! They have different orders, each of which had a Saint as a founder and a special holy relic, but that mainly just gives them different colour schemes. They don't really have different archetypes and cultures like at least the most popular SM chapters... Possibly because they all seem to share the same relationship with religion. Maybe I'll do a Promethean Cult inspired Sister killteam someday. They could live my Salamanders diorama when I'm not playing. 😊

Having Space Marines as the mandatory poster boys really does make it difficult. It means that no other Imperial faction can be in the start box, so you're stuck with all dudes for at least one half of the box. If you want female models in the other half of the kit, your options are basically Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Slaanesh. Slaanesh tends to be a little too racy for mass appeal, so I doubt we'll ever see them in a starter box. And Tau and Eldar are maybe a little too clean and "Good-Guy" at least in appearance, meaning they don't offer quite the same contrast with the clean look of Ultramarines. So Drukhari really do hard-carry that starter box representation as things stand. Which is unfortunate.

I feel like the best bet for female representation in a starter set would be SOB or some sort of cultist faction (though you'd probably have a bit of a hard time deciding on the makeup of the set in terms of demons, given that you can't really find a convenient middle ground between the different chaos aesthetics in the same way that you can with the CSMs being decked out head to toe in heavy armour. It would also be a bit weird for traitor guard to get women before regular imperial guard. I feel like the biggest challenge with putting guard into a starter box is either having ridiculous amounts of infantry or needing to pack in tanks that usually cost a lot in comparison to the other contents). I guess that Custodes could work, given that they can take Sisters of Silence, but I feel like it may send the wrong message if your sole female representation comes from characters who ruin everyone's day with their presence.

Of course, this is a problem that could be solved: make it possible for Space Marines to be women. It's just that easy. (You could also just put someone other than Space Marines in the starter sets for a change. But we know GW will never do that.)

Thanks for doing these kinds of vids despite all the backlash they receive. Really shocking that there's only a single female sculpt across this many years and editions.

Your “FUNDAMENTALS” video gave me the confidence to jump into mini painting. A couple years later and I’m very grateful you’re repping the hobby with content like this.

I started getting back into the hobby at the roll out of AOS. Unlike when I was a teen, I had a partner/ wife who was becoming interested in the hobby after seeing me build models. She got excited and wanted to join in. My teen self couldn't have been more happy with the fact a girl was willing to play Warhammer with me :P When looking to build a army and start in the hobby, she did not want to touch 40k based on how "dude bro-eeee" it seemed. She couldn't find a faction/ army that spoke to her. However, she was able to connect with AOS. This was down to the inclusion of female models in the Nighthaunt model line. Sure enough she grabbed a some banshees and Lady Olinder and was hooked. Now she plays Gloomspit Gitz based on how "cute" and "derpy" they are. The fact my partner wants to share in the hobby, makes me so happy. I can't see why others wouldn't want that? I am 100% behind the point of this video, great topic to cover. Outside of tournament/ competive players, we all connect with/ choose factions based on athestics, lore, design, representation. We see ourselves in fantasy and can connect with the models we play with. It only makes sense that 40k adapts with the times. At some point the sodgy males in the community will become dads. On average half of them will have daughters. Why wouldn't you want to share this hobby with them? Again great vid, keep up the good work.

Those Dark Eldar were my first Warhammer models, and I only started a year and a half ago! The head with the crazy hair was the first head I used, obviously. Great video, and I agree completely; it’s past time to retcon the “no girls allowed” lore.

The only model on the tabletop that evokes a female-coded concept - the Tervigon - is notable for being a breeder organism. I don't think most women players want to hang their own identity on a disgusting baby-maker. There's some powerful, uncomfortable subtext to be read into 40K here.

It was my 1st edition too. I just never got the big box. It was by my then standards already a massive buy, and i had decided i wanted orks. Those werent in there. Stealing vehicles from other armies was fun. Too bad orks now have their generic builds shoehorning everything into the same statline. Seems GW is doing a kind of backwards diversity in their stuff. Kinda sad.

13 days late, but i commend you on your excellent use of the cat containment capsules. As most people should have two cats, all board games and most tabletop games come with two capsules. If you place them out, your cat will be drawn to and contained within them, preventing the cat from attacking your minis or hopping on your table.

Wowee. It’s interesting to see Goobertown become more outspoken on his opinions recently. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, he’s comfortable with himself and his platform and I respect that. Here’s hoping Games Workshop uses a few more diverse factions in their edition boxes!

I had the 40k box for a short time, until my mum through it in the rubbish on collection day while I was at school along with all the Eldar and paints that were in there. It still hurts

Ultimate starter!!!! box Sisters of battle vs Dark Eldar. Lots of female options then and would be so much fun to paint!!! also yes it is funny that AOS has no problem with female leaders and warriors ... only 40K.

Crazy I started with this 3rd edition box. I was about 12 or 13. Of course didn't end up finishing a single miniature, but I loved every single second of going through the box

I would not mind seeing a starter-box with the Sisters of Battle representing the Imperium, or the Imperial Guard, which is slowly becoming one of my favourite factions in 40K. The Sisters already look a bit like Marines, so they could easily be kitbashed further into homebrewed female Astartes. I would probably kitbash them with bits from Space Wolves, while the design would likely go even better with Dark Angels or Black Templars.

I’m in the process of converting an entire army of space marines into an all-female army using 3D printed heads from Etsy. The heads are the only things I’m changing though because let’s be honest, the women would wear the exact same armour as the men. If anything the bulky chestplates that the men have would offer much more protection than perfectly sculpted boob armour

I feel like the crotch might be a bit to big?, That might just be due to the armor design though, But it feels very jockstrapy imo (The one’s used in sports not the fashion ones lol)

Fun (Grim) Fact I was reminded of by that illustration of a woman holding up a decapitated head in the Rogue Trader book, you can't carry a real decapitated head by the hair. Once a human head is detached the scalp will just come off if you try to hold it by the hair. Once I learned this a lot of movie scenes became unintentionally hilarious to me because I can't help but imagine the big scary warrior getting wigged out by the head falling but the hair remaining in their hand. Sidenote: Even when I started playing 3ed as a 12 year old it bugged me that they sculpted boobs into the armor. Even if you were to just put on layers of gamison (cloth armor), it's so padded you can't tell if boobs. Like, nevermind modern combat armor, even the historic armor with the least coverage will completely compress a woman's breast... On the other hand, at least I've never had to listen to someone explain why the entirely fictional universe's space pirates has to have a "no girls" sign on the clubhouse like with the child soldiers. Side-side-sidenote: There's been female space marines since Rogue Trader. They are some of the worst sculpts in GW history, but as GW never actually de-canonizes *anything* that means there are still, and have always been, FSM.

Game manufacturers need to make more women for their games in general.

If I let my cats on my workbench they would constantly batter the bits and put their paws in the paint water. As it is, I still get fur stuck to wet paint and glue.

I glued some old bits down to a baking tray :-) I had some extra wall pieces for Dungeons and Lasers, but pretty much anything should do the trick :-)

My favorite army is my Sisters. So much fun. We need more females in 40k

I’m a queer woman who’s been in the hobby for a few years now and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen another woman when walking into an LGS, a GW store, or a tournament. Would love to see more diversity across all spectrums in 40k as a game and in the player base! It’s all well and good for GW to speak out against racism and harassment but it sometimes doesn’t feel sincere when the products they are profiting from don’t back up their stated values. Thanks for highlighting this!

Do you think this is a chicken or an egg scenario? As in, would having an all female starter box have any effect on this? Are there no women because there are no female models, or are there no female models because there are no women?

I was at a farmer's market and saw a fem presenting person wearing an Adeptus Mechanicus t-shirt and I almost got whiplash with how fast I whipped around to confirm what I saw. Very much a boys club usually. Glad to see a more diverse crowd joining the hobby and feeling more free to show their interest.

Spoiler alert: it isn't genuine when big companies make a loud stance on some social issue, rather than pointing the finger at their customers they should instead look inwards at how their company encourages people of different backgrounds to participate. Instead of tying themselves in knots over who is not welcome in their stores they should instead focus on making everyone feel welcome.

ha me too. I need to get around to painting those.

I went out of my way to make a lot of my space marines ladies (didn't change the models. They're just ladies in cool armor.) because I like girls in armor, and guys only is dumb. That said I do have a Reiver Armor primaris marine with a female lieutenant guardsman (guardswoman? guardsperson?) head and a power sword. Her name is Gloria Sutherland and I use her as an elite pathfinder in my Grimdark Future army. Not sure what roll she'll have in 10th edition, but I'm looking forward to figuring that out and making as many people scream at my heresy as possible. Thanks for the fun video Brent. Looking forward to more.

Absolutely great video!! 100% spot on!! Another thing that might be worthwhile to talk about is how some of the mixed gender sculpts from back in the day have now been re done as solely male sculpts! Haemonculus, Archon, shining spears, incubi, for example!

Unironically i got into 3d printing because i wanted some female miniatures beyond SoB. I will copy rhose women of age of sigmar for my female space marines. Yes. Women. In Space Marins. And nobody can stop me.

@gobbertown I think this video is very thoughtful! How is it on Warhammer fantasy/Age of Sigmar? The lore is constantly changing, this is 2023 there is no reason to make a couple of the Marines girls! Perfect hobbychallenge make the Leviathan box space Marines girls or at least a few of them!

If they can literally destroy the old world of Warhammer Fantasy, I'm pretty sure they can let women join another branch of the military in 40k.

I noticed that a lot of us ladies first army’s has been nurgle. All the ladies are kinda sexualized and I kinda went into the hobby to escape that whole thing. But Papa Nugle was welcoming and happy with us just they way we are. He likes to grow and nurture which I vibe with.

It seems to me that women gamers are a lot more drawn to the factions that feature outlandish and alien creatures, rather than the factions that feature more conventional military folks.

7:22 For many social insects like ants or bees, the overwhelming majority are sterile females, with several males per hive and 1 queen. IF Tyranids are insects, AND they behave similarly to earth social insects, gaunts would most likely be female. But who knows if tyranids are actual insects, or if a standard male/female dichotomy even exists.

That's certainly their inspiration, but in the lore they're all made for purpose from a vat or whatnot so it seems highly unlikely they have any sort of reproductive organs, much less genders.

oh cool! My very first minis came from Casablanca comics, but most of the rest of my early minis came from the keep. The keep is not currently around, I'm not sure what the full story is.... the last time I visited them woulda been ~~ 2004 in their Mill Creek location after they left the mall kiosk

Delightfully sassy, and extremely well said I wasn't following the plot much with 9th and I was silently convinced Sisters were a headline faction back then but apparently not so :(

yeah.... that CGI trailer was a total bait-and-switch. That edition you could get marines and necrons for cheap, but sisters remain silly-expensive

As far as I know, the Sisters of Silence were the first Games Workshop plastic models of female humans for 40k. Considering they only arrived in the Burning of Prospero boxed game, that's... pretty late.

There is a top half of a plastic sister of battle included in the 2nd iteration of the immolator, and I believe that predated the sisters of silence kit... but yeah, you make a very good point! The first human female models being sworn to silence is also a bit whack...

As a SoB player, I will say that SoB likely won't be a starter set faction because they have a very specific look and theme to them, unlike Space Marine who are basically a blank canvas that you paint what you want them to be on. Same goes for the other starter factions throughout the years, with maybe the Death Guard as the exception? Personally would like Imperial Guard to be made a focus of a starter box, or Eldar, or a brand new faction which has ladies in abundance
