This week I finally tackle a model that I've had on my shelf for a good long while. This old resin Contemptor Dreadnought from Games Workshop, and possibly a reforge? I'm not sure, is in really rough shape. I tried my best to save it and I think it will be great to have in an army at some point. I am pretty fascinated by those old/new beaky marines, so this might just be the starting point! That being said, the plastic kits for these are far superior, and I will be on the lookout for those going forward. The Resin is just not great...

About the possibility of it being a recast, if you can look at the model and it looks like an embarrassing garbage cast covered in mould lines squashed/bent details and barley fits together without needing a ton of filler it's probably safe to say it's a legit GW model.

Excellent work on the restoration and I do appreciate the generosity you give the former owners' creativity and skill level; everyone has to start somewhere. On this one I feel like so much effort was put into the restoration/yellow paint that the twin bolter arms were overlooked; perhaps simply because you didn't say what you did to them I felt like they were barely noticed. Something that might be helped on the next one would be adding some soot or blackening around the barrel; canonically it makes sense with the rocket-propelled ammunition and irl it checks out, since such a venerable and ancient dreadnought would never be allowed to rust; but if theres rust, then it would have dirty barrels as well. Armchair painter gripes aside, you still knocked this one out of the park and I'm happy to see a vintage model be given a second chance. Comment for the algorithm gods!

These would be great additions! I definitely was focused on the repairs and the yellow. Just the repairs took up most of my painting time, so I didn't even think about the casings or the guns much. The plan right now is to take this as a foundation and build an army off of it. Then I can add those extra details across an entire set of models :)

There are times when you do these videos when I think, I would have just played the thing as it was. This one looked so much better after you fixed it. I love the "damaged" look on 40K minis. The big pieces almost have to have damage. This is not a game where these armies are all shined up for parades. I rarely ever paint one that I make pristine.

It's amusing that I have the general opposite opinion - the worse the resin, the more likely it was Forgeworld. I don't do 40K anymore (outside of 2nd edition), but the recast stuff I saw in the local scene was always better than the 'proper' stuff...which is pretty sad.

This is why I always soak my model bits in Simple Green for a few minutes, regardless of material, then give them a good scrub with dish soap and warm to hot water before doing much of anything. I tried Totally Awesome for sonic cleaner duty and it didn't do near as well as Simple Green does for me. BTW, Casey, how often do you change out the cleaning solution in your sonic cleaner? I need to try and practice the sponge chipping technique, because frankly? I suck at it!

  • @eBayMiniatureRescues

Interesting, I've tried simple green and I've never found it to work as well in the sonic cleaner. I try to clean mine out every week, depending on how many models get run. It definitely works better when it's fresh! Sometimes I will run a model just to see if it still works and if it doesn't really do anything then I change it out, but if it's mostly working then I will just go with it and change it after, so I guess it does depend on how well things are going for each run.

Is LA's totally awesome a stripper that doesn't melt resin or does the sonic cleaner speed up the stripping fast enough to prevent melting?

  • @eBayMiniatureRescues

    @eBayMiniatureRescues

    21 күн бұрын

LA's Totally Awesome is just a concentrated degreaser that is 99% water, so it's very safe on resin and plastic. It does cut through the paint very well though, and the sonic cleaner just speeds everything up and gets into the harder to reach areas to break up that paint. The only problem with this setup is that the sonic cleaner can get pretty warm, even without a proper heater, so resin can get bendy. Also good though since if you have a bent piece you can let it heat up and bend it back into place. But no melting or issues with resin otherwise:)

feel like some of the details were weirdly ignored. like those big barrel amo belts. with the exposed rounds left base silver was meh. and the guns being so mono silver. detracts from the excellent detailing of the shoulder/free hand. even like the barrel holes left default silver is such a weird choice. like. at least paint them black to give the illusion of barrel holes. I firmly believe minis are like 1-2 focal points and then the basing. the shoulder/chapter freehanding, excellent, basing, well done, but "guns" are almost always a focal point. and they were left rather meh.

Very true, and I still do that for a lot of my models. If you need to get models on the table for a game or whatever, then by all means, do what you have to do! I've been there too. The problem is, it eventually becomes an excuse to not improve your skill level and it's really one of the easiest things to help make your models look better right out of the gate. Spending that extra 10 minutes to clean mold lines is something that you will never regret when all is said and done.

The Fear of Fear - Spiritbox Rakshak - Bloodywood Hushed and Grim - Mastadon Malicious Intent - Malevolence Sound Awake - Karnivool Macro - Jinjer The North Corridor - Chevelle The Art of Survival - Bush Take Me Back To Eden - Sleep Token DAMNUM - Allegaeon For Those Who Wish To Exist - Architects Constellations - August Burns Red Ultra - Vatican

I have a couple of these Dreads and they arrived in unbelievably bad condition, hours of work cleaning them and I still found areas I missed. Some of the worst resin kits I every picked up from forgeworld.

Recast models are usually better than forgeworld models. Like, that's actually a pretty commonly accepted reality among the 30k fanbase. Chinese recasters tend to sell better products than FW. People would buy a model from FW, then have to complain about parts two to three times before finally getting sent a part that was actually a good cast. Meanwhile, recasters would only send good casts because they actually have quality control.

3h cleaning the model Imagine being GW and deciding that you’re gonna charge people exorbitant amounts for a mdoel that isn’t paint ready after assembly and a bit of cleanup. Even if it is a recast Ive seen finecast…. It’s wirse than any recast Ive seen myself

In the end yeah, not very consumer friendly. Personally, I'd rather have a plastic kit over the resin, but they could certainly stand to be more reasonable about it.

less waffling and the video would be better, you have a 23 min ep on a warlord titan with less waffle this this entire video

but I like waffles! That warlord titan video though, that was a good long while ago, I still can't believe that only ended up being 23 minutes, I know what you mean though :)

Coming from a guy that has at least 500 models made purely of FW resin ....and a warlord titan made of FW resin ...you're talking out of your ar*e

Well all that stuff from1:30 is bull ...if there are broken parts it's due to how it was put together or how it was weathered ....you don't need loads of super glue for FW resin ....this is all just silly ....FW resin was superior to plastic ...the details so much more crisp ....

I think you may have missed some of the points I was making because I didn't say anything about one being better over the other, and I definitely didn't say you need loads of glue for fw resin.
