I Survived a Basque Boarding School!

This summer I spent 4 weeks at 2 different Basque language boarding schools trying to improve my beginner's Basque. This has been a dream of mine for many years, and I'm so happy I can tell you all about my journey. In this video I'm sharing with you my thoughts on the experience after my first full week of completely Basque immersion.
After a lifetime of listening to my family speak Euskara, the Basque language, I'm embarking on a journey to learn it myself. Subscribe and follow along as I attempt to learn this ancient and mysterious language.

Goraintzi zure familiari ❤️ Sorry for my english 😅 I'm sure you didn't understand my whole message, because it's not in "Batua" ( the basque you learn at school ) but in "Xiberotar" ( "Souletin" in French, another "basque" ). Don't try to translate it with Google, because Google doesn't know the "Xiberotar" language 😂😂 I hope it's not too difficult to learn basque ! Good luck for your learning ✨

Listening in further on your video about the experience, I have to agree that being plunked into an immersive environment is really hard because for me to accurate know which words are which, I basically have to know through writing which sounds are being used, like dental "t" like Americans do it or the retroflex "t" (bottom of tip of tongue touches the hard palate of the tongue) sound. That is because you can't see behind the teeth what the tongue is doing. It looks the same to people who rely on lip-reading to fill in the missing sounds. Another instance are the "j and "jh", "g" and "gh" sounds. The difference between these two sounds is like saying "mug" for "g" and saying "mug holder" real fast together for "gh", making sure to pronounce the "h" right after the "g" sound. I can't hear it AT ALL, so I have to rely on the spelling to get it right. I am profoundly deaf, and I have lived in India so far for 3 years, in spite of the lockdown or mask situation which precludes ALL verbal communication if store staff can't pull down their masks to let me see what they are saying. They end up having to write everything for me in that case. At this time, there's no chance to practice "receiving Hindī" from another person, though I can speak a very small amount to them. I understand how hard and intimidating this immersive environment is for you. I've not dare to try to learn another European language other than Spanish, as I can't make heads or tails of French, never mind German.

I understand about the limitation of a "classroom environment" back in America and trying to learn a language that way, which doesn't work for someone with absolutely no experience with learning a second language or the language you are trying to learn. I am profoundly deaf, so I had to learn language in an unnatural (perhaps unholy??) way, having to learn to speak/lip-read/ and read/write all at the same time. Like what was happening in 5-6 years' time had to be compressed in less than 1.5 years. It makes it DIFFICULT to learn any second language afterwards because you just don't want to go through the experience again, which unfortunately colors my attempts to learn a second language (I've tried with Spanish, Esperanto, Hindī, and Sanskrit, the latter two which I am much more familiar with now and can sight read, though I don't understand much of what I'm seeing, still). As a result (because I'm 55), I don't have a formal education for learning second languages, as all this was waived for me by replacing these language classes with other electives in high school and college. Sign language wasn't even available then when I was getting my BA degree. Anyway, I think that the problem you run into is that a classroom is no substitute for full immersion, where you are forced to learn to speak a language you are not fluent in. A child does not have a primary language to learn the mother tongue in, right? So, how do you learn your mother tongue if you don't have some language to start with? That is what the immersion or boarding school environment is supposed to create.

Hello! I had mentioned before that I have a small percentage of Basque. Well, I took a more detailed (and expensive) DNA test which gave the following percentage as 13.5% and detailed as "Origin: Peaks in France and Spain Basque regions and declines in Spain, France, and Germany." We do have a Payzant family tree book published in 1970 with about 7,000 family members, both dead and living at the time of publication.
