    For Acadians, if your last name is Basque then you have a Basque last name. It's as simple as that. Other than the occasional Bastarache, most of the patronyms got changed to Basque.

    Not Basque but I lived in Donostia for about 8 years, and whenever a small child would ask my name and I would tell them (my name being Bianca) they would always give me a funny look. Well it turns out my name sounds indistinguishable from the words "bi hanka" which means "two legs". Children always picked up on this a lot faster than adults. Also due to this similarity, whenever I was in school my name would be spelled "Bianka" with a k on the roll call. I kinda like "Bianka" though since it's almost like my little Basque nickname.

    I don't know why your videos have popped up in my feed:however they are interesting! Just for snitz and giggles, I put my surname in a Portuguese to Basque translator, it came up with "soinua", so I did Basque to English and it said means "sound", interesting. I tried some other root words and it just repeated with same spelling, so apparently no translation, interesting. Far as I know, no Basque in DNA, Paper trail does not show any either. Interestingly my surname is eerily similar to "Soreasu" from Buber's Basque Page, which does not result in a translation in the Basque to English translator. According to BBP Soras, means "prairie" and su/zu or tzu means abundance or plenty, HMMM, more interesting possibilities to the history of my surname.

    Hi, I don’t know if you could help me. My grandfather surname is Baroco. I can’t find the origin of his surname anywhere. He was from Granada. When I use the Geneanet it shows that very few people have this surname documented in Granada (which is my family) I can’t find it anywhere in the south of Spain (from Geneanet map) but it showed that it was documented in Laroque des Alberes ( Pyrenees region) during 1700 and , Beaucaire (FR), Vollone (FR), Dalacourt (FR), during 1800, and Markina-Xemein region (Spain. basque) LaGuardia region (basques), San Vicente de la Barquera. (Spain), Pombal(PT), Arles (pyrenee), Quillan (Pyrenees) and Granada during 1900. His grandfather surname was Baroco Alaniz. But I don’t know if is possible that it was a variation of Alaiz. When he migrated to another country he said his last name is Vasco (but I think he tried to explain that his surname it’s basque origin, and then they put his surname as Vasco and not Baroco). But this is just and hypothesis. Someone told me Baroco it’s a common Spanish surname, but I can’t find anything about.

  • @yossarian6799

    @yossarian6799

    3 жыл бұрын

    Euzide sounds more Basque, but you'd have to ask someone more familiar with Basque. It's not French, nor is it a galllicized Greek name, which was very fashionable in the 1800s (my mére-mére's name was Aglaia). Abshire is unique to the Lafayette area. It is a local corrupted form of the German name "Abscher." The Abshires and Hofpauirs descend from a group of German immigrants who intended to settle in Texas but ended up in Louisiana. Barbe, Artigue/Ortego, Guilbeau, Guidroz, Boudreaux, Thibodaux, Altazin, Aguillard, Bordelon, Lastrapes, Eschete (more common around Houma), Bastarache, Landaiche, Duhart, Duhon, Dicharry, Garza... are all Basque, or gallicized Basque names. Guedry and Broussard can be either French or Basque (Eguiterre, Baruzart). It's a shame that most people in Louisiana are clueless to their true ancestry. It's embarrassing the way they try to sweep anything under the rug that isn't french. I've heard coonasses insist that "Magee" and "Hollier" were french names. smh....

    The Basque spelling would be Larraskitu, it's a neighbourhood in Bilbao (Biscay) and also a surname from my father's hometown Loiu in Biscay. See: aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus/eu/larraskitu/ar-97364/

    Otxoa-Valles meaning wolf Valley's. My last name is Basque and Catalan these are names from the Pyrenees. The Basque language would have been official language of spain if the Roman had never conquered Spain.

    Its funny that on the buber website you have linked, the name vasquez is very small and when clicked on it says that they dont believe it is basque, but that the EZ part in the name in Basque means "son of" but they dont know where Vazqu comes from... 🤦‍♂️ im just trying to find where Vazquez comes from, but couldnt the name change in time from a B to a V? My sibling had a DNA test and our parents are from Mexico, but dna showed mostly (over 40%) Spanish, with a small percentage Basque.
