My father explained to me as a young man that the ez at the end of Spanish surnames indicated 'son of' As Mac, Mc, Son (Ericson), O (O'Riely), indicate 'son of' in other ethnic groups.

Well for the most part. Chavez refers to key makers, so maybe it means the son of a key maker? Who knows. Some examples of what you said would be Rodriguez= son of Rodrick, Perez= son of pedro, Ramirez= son of Ramiro, Martinez= son of martin, Gutierrez= son of Gutierre.

Carlos Sanchez Quite the opposite. The reason why certain surnames are more common than others is because people have sex, and therefore babies, with people who carry those surnames. In other words, the less common your last name is the less sexually attractive you or your ancestors are/were. It’s common sense, aka science...aka natural selection.

D R Speak for yourself. Not all Hispanics have a predominant non-European admixture. Some of us are well between 70-80% European, and it shows in our phenotype. Our Spanish ancestry is nothing to be ashamed of and neither is our indigenous side. All around the world people have genetic components derived from various racial/ethnic groups. We Hispanics are not the exception.
