Its beautiful and love the dedication to you're art work. One thing I struggle with is consistency. I used to draw but when I pick up a pencil now I am very basic. Its like I forgot how to shade in some regard because its been years.

That is actually what goes into painting flesh. Its very interesting and tough to learn. You dont really use the typical "skin colors" because it all depends on the light and colors reflected on the skin

That is very normal actually, that is how skin is usually painted ! To get skin right you need to use a lot of colors and not just a dark or light brown🥰 Blue and green and brighter reds work really well and make the skin look alive

The thing that strikes me the most is that the MOOD has completely altered. I’m not sure if it’s partially the lighter background on the new one or not. Obviously your Second painting is technically much more proficient and realistic. But what really captured me about the first one was the mood. I think the first one tells more of a story. And that’s what I look for in art. Although your second painting of the figure is beautiful. I really wonder what would happen if you did a more impressionistic and darker background on the new one. If that would bring back the gritty/sensual mood and story that I feel did not translate over. (anyway, fantastic video! Loved it!)

I have kindly disagree. The mood was not set in the background but by the focal point itself in this painting...it conveys different and yet the same sides of the same person...more evolved..like a real human.

Exactly, the first one recalls memories, for me it is the picture of a hooker outside an old fashioned nigth club, i almost hear some jazz music as background. The second one is the instagram picture of some narcissist we have in abundance nowadays. Perhaps just a bit more depth of color in the first one would pop up the lady. This is the same thing i find in music, there are some simple songs, but very groovy, and some other at insane level of sofistication, but forgettable.

Definitely down for a version 3.0. I wonder what your take on an improved composition will be

I agree! I like the mood of the first one. But the technical proficiency of the figure’s rendering in the second.... Going purely on which image pulls me in more and makes me think more about what’s happening in the scene, I have to say the first one is my preference. Even though the second one is very beautiful.

Wow, that is a HUGE difference. I think you understand color and how to use your brush better, among other things. I hope i’m able to grow like this in 10 years, too!

Her skin is practically glowing!!! This is incredible and you are 100% the reason I started painting in oils. Thank you for what you do.

The new one feels more free and I think that is such a huge achievement to reach as an artist.

The second one is a more aesthetically pleasing as a PORTRAIT, but the first one looks like a screen grab from a movie scene and is more atmospheric. Still has a magic in it’s own way. Both beautiful.

It’s interesting how art also reflects modern fashion and trends. The new girl looks like an Instagram influencer with contour on point and studio lights. 💄 The older is the first selfie she posted when she started out. 📸 Anyway, it’s an inspiring video and gives me hope that I can also get better in time

"Once I became a better craftsman, even better than I imagined, I felt kind of empty" Ouch, I feel that, & imagine that even if I reach my next goal of becoming a full time artist I'll feel the same way.

I love them both!!! For me... I feel like... the first one is more emotional in the sense that she seems to have so many worries and struggles and that though she's trying so hard, she's caught in a quicksand. the second one feels like.. she still has worries and struggles but she learned how to deal with them and let go of things she can't control. she seems free and glowing. there's growth.

"One of the paintings has what the other pretends to have" Oof, that's so on point on how I feel whenever I try to draw, except that all mine are the "pretenders."

"Step one: caffeinate, step two: paint" I felt this in my soul. Good to hear it will stay with me after art school too. This is the universal artist experience it seems like xD

ur the reason why I'm interested in oil paints now, I'm a watercolor artist 😅

i was in the same position 2 months ago ahah, all i did was watercolors and gouache! now i finally bought my first set of oil paints and wow, it's incredible. i highly recommend trying it out, it's extremely satisfying to do, i love the medium now!

Same! Im so fascinated and intimidated by oils lol. I mostly use and love acrylic but it dries too quick, even with a slow dry medium. Watercolor is easier to blend and so much fun to work with but theres nothing like oil, apparently

I love how the tone of her skin is in the updated version! The depth of the newer version and how she just pops. The first is moody without as much depth but is still stunning with the darker version.

At 3 minutes you can already tell you've improved SO much.. she actually had form and looks more 3 dimensional while the older one looks flat and makes her look pretty wonky :) love how you changed the background

The difference is huge, yes but both paintings are incredibly stunning in their own style. One is more on the abstract side with cartoonish vibes and the other one is more realistic and _sensual_ .. I honestly love both. You are very talented

Been going through your videos for the last week and I’ve never been so inspired to start painting. I’ve never touched oil paints, just water colour & acrylics but I think I might take the leap...

HUGE difference.. Darkest night to brightest day difference.. ! WOW !

Contrast, richness, but most importantly, confidence are the things that stand out to me in the new version... You can see an artist comfortable and confident in their ability and skills, who has found a path with their work they enjoy, and whose results they are proud of and enjoy themselves. In the first painting, you can see an artist looking for those things. Amazing work.

Alpay, there is definitely a maturity in your confidence of painting in comparison from the first and the second painting. Yes, as you critiqued I agree, there is more clarity and mystery in the second painting, contrast and variety (worlds apart in comparison), quite a vast difference even thought the model is the same image. Obviously the time comparison also proves your growth in artistry. My eyes appreciate the second painting, although, it will be interesting to see your third painting of the same image to see what else could be appreciated in addition to the talent that already withhold.

Your new version has so much more impact, it's hard to put into words! Amazing

I think the beauty of early art is, if it's a painting or music or something else, that it's bolder. I like the deep reds from the background of the old painting, and how they seep into the foreground. I think that adds depth where the newer one is lacking.

The lighting and shadowing on the newer painting really pops to me. Gives it so much life. I love both of them, thank you for sharing!

While the second one looks more professional and perfect, it looks like an advertisement. As a piece of art, I like the first one better, it looks more moody and artsy

The newer effort glows with an enhanced feeling of three dimensionality. Your color tones have a cleaner appearance. The ten-year old painting is flatter and a bit muddier. Yes, indeed you have grown very much as an artist. Your confidence and experience show thru!

There is a huge difference!!! It's not even close. Kudos for the discipline and perseverance! Earlier you had basics, the new version has strong subtlety!

The new one is so much better in all the ways you mentioned.

You captured the light so much better in the second painting. I can definitely see a difference in luminosity and expression. The second painting is hands above the first!

I can't compare the two. The second is so far above the first that I'd think the first was a student copy if you hadn't told me it was a repaint. I'd attribute the first to a modestly talented high schooler and the second to a, as you are, masterful professional artist. Beautiful :)

Whoa! When I first saw the original painting, I thought it was successful and beautiful. But then when you see the 2 compared side by side your repaint is LIGHT-YEARS ahead of the original. This is super impressive! I've been painting digitally for 6 years and still paintings take me days to finish. I look forward to being able to finish a complete looking painting/ illustration in a few hours. Way to go! Love your videos and your work. You're extremely inspiring. Very interesting and I look back at my paintings from 10 years ago and see that although technically I have improved, I also lost something along the way? Perhaps I lost interpretation of what I was painting then due to lack of technical and anatomical knowledge I now have!

There was a portrait I completed in pencil at the very beginning of my art journey. I was 24 years old at the time. 10 years and 1,000s of hours later I did the portrait again in charcoal. The difference between the 2 works was jaw dropping. The difference between a student and a master. This is why I dated and kept all of my work, even as a beginner. One day I would like to see how much I've learned and grown as an artist.

They're both nice. You can definitely see your progress as an artist in the latest. Updated 3.0 would be great... More please ;-)

I can certainly see the difference in skill, but I was kinda diggin' the red background from the original. While the technique is unquestionable, I feel that the new painting loses out to the old in terms of atmosphere.

I do love the newer version and I can REALLY see a ton of improvements. I will say the red lighting on your original is a little bit more engaging for me (though obviously inferior in the way it was painted). Fantastic as always, good sir

What you said about realising several years down the line when you became an accomplished artist that it wasn't bringing you as much joy and satisfaction as you expected it would all those years earlier really brings home the fact that what's important is to find joy in what we do right now, to not rely on some potential future skill to "make us happy". And if we can find joy in a process that then further improves our skill then all the better but if we practice and go through years of toil without taking much joy from the process in some imagined future bliss and satisfaction we will never reach that point. That is something I wish I did more of, make art, play music but do it in a way that remains fun at all times. And yes that updated painting is so much more alive than the old one, there's a sensuality to it that is very well rendered, which is hard to see in the original.

Have been working with acrylics for so many years. But now have been motivated to try oils seeing you having fun painting.

I have started to use flat brushes like in video, nice easy to draw. Every time, evry portrait or painting i am using different techniques and i enjoy it. Why not, no one will buy it, but my nerves feel good like this.

Needed to see this- After giving very little time to my painting and artwork for too long I decided recently to dive back in headfirst, pushing myself to make time, in the hope of learning and improving with regular practice. Seeing this comparison between your then and now really shows how much can be achieved by putting in the work. Makes my failures and frustrations seem a little more worthwhile! I had to pause at the comparison. I truly did not expect to see that level of difference! I mean, before you put them side by side, the difference wasn't so noticeable, but once you did... wow! Also, it would be great to see you make a third comparison where you make your own reference, it might change the game completely! What a great video of artist's progress this was!

Yes version 3.0!

For me the main difference is that the first one could be done by an growing artist, while the second one is undeniably Alpay's painting. You could see the first one somewhere and you would not associate it with anybody in particular, but if you would see the second one somewhere and knew Alpay's work, you would immediately know it's his. And that's what I think makes it interesting: the indivuality of an artist expressed so easily after they've done their fair amount of learning in terms of knowledge and skill, but more importantly themselves as an artist.

The only thing I like better about the original is the background and the reddish glow on and around her hair - really gives a 'night club' vibe. The portrait itself though is like night and day - amazing transformation into a truly stunning portrait!
