I taught a painting class 19 years ago, and people asked me about getting "more definition" in the contours of a face, or clothing. I told them, "buy some cheap, soft molding clay. Every so often, take a break from painting, and try to mold a face, or a torso, or anything. Don't try to make a good sculpture/finished piece of art or become a sculptor "on the side", just let your hands mold things, and your brain will absorb this, and you'll see an improvement in your painted cheekbones, jawlines, etc." Everyone who tried this told me that they enjoyed a noticeable improvement in their painting. Happy painting, everyone!

@@michaelhaire7319 Thank you very much, very kind! The great thing about it is that you don't have to invest in sculpting tools, since the best effects seem to come from what the brain learns from our hands molding the clay. 😊. And you don't have to buy expensive clay, either, unless you want to. I hope it works for you like it worked for my students and art-pals!

This is a great idea, thanks a lot ☺️
1. Make yourself a dish for dinner that you've never eaten or heard of before. 2. Play one game that you never played before 3. Watch a documentary about a subject you know nothing about 4. Create one artwork in a completely different medium than what you're used to. 5. Read or listen to one book about a subject you're curious about 6. Think of a question... something you don't know, maybe haven't even thought of before, and then research or look up the answer Xylospongium is what the Romans used btw 😳... thanks all for watching and liking the video and don’t forget to come back here if you end up doing some of the things I suggested in the video!!! Xoxo

1. I made shrimp and grits which I’ve heard of but I’ve never eaten grits. It was scrumptious! It’s so satisfying when a new dish turns out well and I don’t burn the house down. 6. Wouldn’t you know it, the oldest-known color on earth is a brilliant pink.

I think what I mean when I say I want to get better, is that I want the ability to put what's in my head on the canvas/sketchbook. Too often I just can't get what I make to look like what I envisioned.
"Stabby stabby" 😂 . I had an art teacher who would often refer to overworking as blendy blendy. I think I may have a new catchphrase now. Love the video, as always. Your video quality is exceptional and I was splendidly surprised, if not a tiny bit shocked, to see your face.
Dry humour. Sarcastic pragmatism. Compassionate approach. A wonderful coffee break moment that's left me with a fun challenge to step up to. 🙌

you said exactly how i was feeling...i painted John Wick too and wish I'd seen this vid first
I absolutely love how you use shapes of color to create the feeling of skin's temperature and it reflecting light. Absolutely superb.
I'm not really sure how long I've been subscribed to your channel, but its been a few years. I don't think I've ever commented before but just wanted to say I love your feedback, advice, and your constant reminders to not stay in the box "they" want us to stay in. You're encouraging and insightful and I appreciate it. And..i love that you're showing yourself more in your videos. 👍 (not in a weird way lol)
One of my favourite artists and one of my favourite action actors, win win! I wish we had an art teacher like you in school.
I do not need motivation to try new things with my art. I’m at a point in my life that I figure anything beyond now, is a bonus. I survived breast cancer - twice, and I know life is short. I say this to tell everyone who is reading the comments, ‘ listen to this man! What you learn is never wasted. Also, subscribe to this channel. I’ve really been enjoying binge watching all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise!’
This video is so topical to me at the moment. To help get out of artist block, I’ve been putting together “mood boards” for a couple pieces I want to do and it’s helping me become more visually aware of different components and aspects of a painting/illustration. These paintings are Star Wars related so I’m working in the familiar, but I’m learning more about lighting (taking my own photos and experimenting with light), atmosphere, storytelling, things that I’d expect in a cinematography class😅. And after I’ve gathered a good amount of reference photos and my own sketches to utilize, I write bullet points about the overall theme and what sticks out to me; kinda like analyzing a piece of literature. I really recommend looking at concept art of a fav movie/video game because those are great for studying and teaching yourself how to tell a story or evoke a certain emotion. Its been a fun brainstorming exercise that doesn’t revolve around a particular art technique or medium. Everything said in this video is helping me even more! Definitely need to dive into the unfamiliar. Thank you Alpay!!
I love his lil blue apron ,it's so cute
Apart from the fact that you provide us with really valuable informations and new perspectives when in comes to making art and being an artist, your voice is so soothing and calming. I love all your videos!
I love listening to you, your voice, the words you use, and of course, your painting tips. Absolutely wonderful 👏
Seeing work in progress videos on art is always soothing. It calms my nerves, and fire up inspiration. Lift up my mood, and see hope better. Painting, sketching, and just making art, or just watching art videos, especially yours, has always been something I look forward to after work. I don't finish my artwork in one go. I just let myself work on it whenever I have the urge, and once it's begun, I stop by at my small desk and tweak something here and paint something there and just let myself immersed in the flow of mood until I feel that it's enough. Thank you for sharing us these videos. Especially in these hard times.
I love the unique way you help others with their art, in your KZread videos. You always help people to think. Thank you, you seem wise beyond your years. Loved your piece as usual. So inspiring as always ❤

Super content as always. I find watching you paint and talk about art is such a refreshing experience. Thank you.
Excellent advice! I generally read a lot and find that sometimes a short sentence sparks a load of ideas that gets me researching and going through other books to develop an idea further. 👍👍👍
The best thing I did right fron the beginning when I was exploring my creative side was to start a journal. Inside I would include anything that inspired me from a family photo to a leaflet to an art exhibition. Eventually I expanded that to include noting down the new techniques I picked up, colour mixing recipes and when I struggled drawing heads properly I even included several methods to help remind me such as the loomis method etc.
I think the analogy that you used with the Chinatown reference was very clever and illustrated the point you were trying to get off really well I believe. I love that your words were like a call to action to expose yourself to things that will enrich your art or influence you to be creative. I am going to take that as an excuse to go on a vacation! 😂

Very Good Advice thank you Sharing
I've just sat for an hour and sketched a self portrait and I'm quite pleased with it for two reasons: 1. It actually looks like me 2. I can identify readily what I'd do better next time. So fun and I know what I need to work on. Trying to practice drawing and painting a few different things. I was drawing with patients at work the other day with just what coloured pens the ward had. I drew a chicken somewhat similar to Alpay's that I'm pleasantly surprised and pleased with.
