It's so weird to me when people say "the book is always better" because I have read/watched SO many where the movie is better. Just off the top of my head, The Devil Wears Prada, The Notebook, Bridget Jones' Diary, The Princess Diaries (even in my teenage years I couldn't stand Mia😂), and a lot (I mean A LOT) of these YA romances turned netflix originals. There are so many where the movie is entertaining but the book is complete shit.

Quinn saying if she included minority characters that the other characters would be mean to them is absolutely mind boggling to me. Does she realise that she can decide how her own characters act? She literally wrote a sexist, racist book and then was like but it's not my fault, it's my characters. Wow.

fr as a writer you get to pick how characters act- and yes sometimes the characters end up different than intended, but things like how they treat minorities is absolutely something that is under the author’s control.

@@dankhnw8 and there is such a thing as creative liberties where even in realistic or historical fiction facts can be tweaked. world building that is unique to this story is permitted. This would allow the author to determine racial relations while maintaining a mostly historically accurate tale. And seeing as this is fiction it is not expected to be 100% accurate

Daphne was not tricked into marriage. She knew the "No Kids" rule. The reasons should not matter. She chose to marry the Duke. She wanted him so much that she was willing to give up a much better match and ruin her reputation.

She literally pleads with the Duke to marry her because she feared someone saw them kissing in the garden. He felt bad and did so but he CONSTANTLY told he he couldn't have kids and didn't want her to be in a situation where her husband would never give her children. She didn't care and opted for marriage anyway. She RAPED him. How is this not clear to you? She could've just not raped him... Jeez why are people so disgusting?

What's crazy to me is that so many people didn't even realise that scene was rape! Whenever I got onto the topic of Bridgerton with someone I would mention how bad the rape scene was and every person would look at me with confusion and go "what rape scene?". It absolutely blew my mind and shows how we still have such a long way to go with how men's consent and sexuality is treated in addition to women's.

Hers is the only good Book in the series i have read yet bc the story has the romance between the best characters plus its about the other two best characters (Lady Danbury and Eloise)

Tw: rape The worst part of the Netflix series, for me, is that they only SLIGHTLY change the rape scene to make it a little less rapey, but it is STILL assault in the actual scene. She still very clearly rapes him, and it's still glossed over, and even worse the fact that they bothered to change it makes it seem like.. they don't consider what happened as rape? And SO many people don't seem to realise she raped him. It's so upsetting.

I can’t stand when attractive people pull that shit.

As a teenager with childhood-onset fluency disorder, I would have *loved* to read about a character like the Duke having to struggle with stammering too. It's so tiring that the media always represents us as mentally challenged or stupid, and, contrary to what the Netflix adaptation seems to think, it's usually not something that you can just "mature out of". These speech problems are probably going to stay with us forever, even if we control or hide it like the Duke did in the books. It just rubs me the wrong way that Netflix ignored that part of him because it didn't fit their idea of a good/attractive character.

I'm very sorry that you feel that way. If it helps, Netflix has a show called the Umbrella Academy where one of the characters(Diego) had a stammer growing up. The show is almost exclusive in that it focuses on them as adults so his stammer is mostly under control but it does make a small reappearance in his adult life. It isn't an important characteristic of him or does it have a major role in the plot, but it's there. I do understand that this isn't enough and that the media should not misrepresent a struggle faced by many people-or hell, ignore them entirely- but I very much hope that this could give you a little bit of comfort. actually it does sometimes go away completely. i had issues myself couldn't speak till i was 4 to five years old. and when i eventually learnt how to talk i stammered up till my teenage years then it gradually stopped...i am 36 i don't stammer anymore at all...

A really good movie if you haven’t seen it is The King’s Speech. It’s about the eventual king of England during world war 2 working to fix his stutter because he will be expected to give speeches regularly if he becomes the king. I really enjoyed it as some with a speech impediment who wants to go into politics, it is really cool to see leaders in government, like King George or Biden, who are or have been successful leaders in spite of the way their speech impediment made some people perceive them.

I came here for a 15 minute review of the Bridgerton series and now I’m just thinking about how uncomfortable sex on stairs could be and that jack actually said the words she threw his family heirloom just to get cracked like a glow stick

I was honestly gobsmacked that they left that assault scene in. I know they toned it down so Simon’s not drunk/almost unconscious, but it still doesn’t change the fact that she assaulted him. I also hate that people have defended Daphne’s actions saying she didn’t know what she was doing, she wasn’t educated about all of that stuff. No, at that point she was acting out of malice and she knew exactly what she was doing!

The book was written like an average fanfiction. I genuinely only powered through it because I am used to reading fanfiction, so I just considered it a Harry Potter AU about Ginny and Draco instead of an actual piece of literature. However, I had to stop at that scene because if it were fanfiction I would have never read it since there would have been a warning about dubious consent/non-con. I never finished this book

Thanks for talking about the SA scene. When I was watching that scene in the show, I got really uncomfortable because Simon’s face totally said that he wanted Daphne to stop and the fact that she kept going made me feel ill.

the Penelope thing is very much important for later books, because describing her the way they do is supposed to be how society (which was just particularly shit and mean back then) is seeing her only for her looks, when as the series goes on, as she *spoiler alert* comes into her own and away from her awful family, she grows in confidence and starts dressing how she wants. She was never supposed to be ugly, just dressed in an unflattering way by her controlling mother.

I think the first book is the worst in the series and that Simon and Daphne are the least interesting characters. Eloise and her story is the best. I think Eloise is in the fifth book. The writing is still meh but I hope the show improves it if they ever make a fifth season supposing they follow one season per one book.

@4Freedom4All The Netflix series had to reveal who Lady Whistledown was, just in case they didn't get picked up for anymore seasons. I heard about RJP too. The only reason why I was interested in S2 was for any glimpses of Simon and Daphne and the baby. Anthony did not hold my attention at all. When I watched it again, I fast-forwarded through his scenes.

Finally someone mentioned the necklace. I was screaming at the screen in the middle of the night “ Pick the damn necklace, you Idiot !!!! “ 😂😂

Literally! Especially when she's talking to the blonde who liked the prince (can't remember her name) who saw Simon and Daphne making out, and she says that she never left the ballroom. I was really expecting that to result in the blonde saying she found the necklace or something so she knew Daphne left the ballroom, and blackmailing her to leave the prince alone in exchange for not revealing Daphne lost the necklace/made out with Simon

i guess the editors just decided to publish because it was a guaranteed money grabber.

One thing I was really disappointed about in regards to the show is that Simon apologizes for his actions but Daphne never apologizes specifically for hers. There was no balance in taking responsibility. And my god, in the book that moment was so much worse than in the show. I'm somewhat glad they changed that, but it still doesn't sit well with me either way. I actually stopped watching the show for a while after that scene, I just couldn't reconcile that moment with Daphne's character (at least in the show, I haven't read the books), it was so out of character and out of nowhere to me.

@4Freedom4All I will admit my faults and say that I failed to bring my point across and but trying to talk with you and yours points that don't have anything to do with the original topic, I misdirect myself of what I wanted to talk about and end up saying things I don't 100% agree with. So to stop that, here's my point. The rape scenes (all of then) were bad, not because it was rape, but because the way it's was portrait in a good light or romantic and when they weren't they were used just a vehicle to add drama and spice to the history, making this history way more unlikable that it's already was. I agree with a lot of things I said here and don't agree with some (the slavery example was bad yikes) and will still say, that denying someone of something is not rape and that everytime I said something you brought something that didn't make sense with anything I said, like "Simon raped her first you don't think that's rape????" And one last thing, sorry for being rude in some of my previous comments. I will stop commenting now

Everyone is applying today's rationale to 1813 when women were totally owned by their husbands and by law could never be raped by their husbands because it was his right to have her consent or not. And imo diminishing "rape" by applying to this situation which is simply a wife in her anger exacting revenge on her husband for deceiving her. Which happens in relationships. Simon got bested by his wife is all. He lost the upper hand. He didn't get raped.

As a native Swahili speaker, the word for boobs is "matiti", so you weren't too far off in what you said 😂😂😂 Also, not like I was ever going to read the book but now that I know that's how Africa is portrayed I am absolutely not reading it 😂

I started reading that book as a recommendation and I literally couldn't even get to the second part. It is probably the worst book I've ever read (or tried to read) beacuse first I thought the author was trying to imitate Jane Austen later on I realized that we couldn't even compare them beacuse this book is so fucking stupid, I mean I get why people who like the "era" in which is inspired read it but seriously is not a good book. I wanted to re read it when the Netflix series came but you remembered why I hated this book so much so thank you.

When she left that necklace on the bridge I just kept thinking, When is she going to give that back to the prince?!?! And when she finally broke it off with the prince I was shocked he didn’t ask for it back 😂

You are not the only one. I find Eloïse SOOOO annoying!!! Her attitude is insufferable: she is arrogant and impatient, she thinks she is smarter than everyone else and always makes everything about herself and/or women's rights, she doesn't listen to anyone, dismisses other people's feelings and opinions if they don't align with her viewpoint, etc. She has very few redeeming features/moments and they are not enough for me. I hope this is a conscious choice from the writers because of her youth and that she will grow out of her attitude. She seriously needs to grow up. Then maybe she can actually be the intelligent activist woman she wants to be.

Hi!! I'm so thank that you talked about the assault. I kinda feel sad and annoyed at myself because as I watched the series I don't even noticed that it was already an assault. So it was an eye opener for me to not be an ignorant in this kind of scenario.

The thing that bothered me about the (Netflix) series is that beyond the s.a. scene, the "resolution" was rushed and it never fully explored the trauma that may have been experienced by Simon afterward. They instead made it seem as if Daphne was in the right all along, and they had Simon instantly ditch something he has been holding onto for years in order to fulfill Daphne's desires. Yes, it is set in a period where not much awareness surrounded these issues and society had different values. However, even without education surrounding these topics, I'm sure trauma still affected those who had been violated in that way (probably just without the means to describe it). For Simon to have been violated by someone he trusts and who agreed to marry him knowing that no children would result from that arrangement, on top of his pre-existing trauma which made him vow to never have children in the first place: upon being coerced into reproduction, I can't understand how exactly his character is able to almost instantly move past the betrayal and put everything behind him in order to commit to this relationship. Even in a society which may have felt that Simon wronged her more than she did him, how does he not at least feel some type of way about it? How am I supposed to believe their relationship isn't set up for complete failure? I can appreciate the show as a period piece in which society has problematic values to begin with, but they could have portrayed that without essentially ignoring some of the fundamental issues and realistic repercussions that would have made the story more compelling as a whole (especially since it is geared to a modern audience).

That’s so true and it isn’t just about regency set books/ movies. I remember watching “Just Friends” with Ryan Reynolds and there’s this female blonde character who he works with as a music producer who is CONSTANTLY forcing herself upon him, I think at one point she forcibly removed his trousers off him. And the movie sets it up like it’s funny and she’s just psycho, when she is literally harassing him all the time. And that was a 2009 movie. I am SO SICK of Hollywood depicting male s.a. like it’s something minor or unimportant, I just wanna 🤜

Exactly !! I was so disappointed also with the way that they completely glossed over the sexual assault issue and just had Simon forget about his pre-existing want of not having children. I didn’t find Simon or daphne to be very likeable tbh which is difficult when they’re the main couple of the show (by the end of the season, I disliked most of the characters tbf)

Because of the other bits in the show, and because of the sexual aspects of it, I’ve seen nobody on tv discuss this when they’ve talked about it. An example being Loose Women, they had an opportunity to acknowledge that but decided to focus on how sexy it was and how “sexy” the actors were and I was immensely disappointed. Not enough people, only really a handful of authors and non-famous Twitter users, have outwardly called out this scene and it’s lack of repercussions and it’s important that they do.

That’s completely what I thought- after they were married I felt Daphne’s character became very 2D and really disliked her- the whole resolution sucked because there basically wasn’t one apart from the fact she got pregnant?! The whole children storyline really annoyed me

Holy cow someone finally, I watched the entire show for the sake of it. It was fun and all for like the first what 4 episodes? Anyways, I continued watching it even when by the fifth episode it started to get idk eh and hell do I regret it. The unnecessary sex scenes, the sexism, and r*pe scene because that's what it was just did not do it for me and the fact that the show and the book got away with that has blown me away.

i'm really loving these in depth video essays youve been making recently and your more researched style videos esp when its looking at pop culture stuff (like the harry styles poetry and fave books vids)

I skipped the first book because I watched the show and went straight to the second book. Considering how lovely the story of the second book was, I am very surprised to hear that the first book was like this. Am glad I skipped it, but I feel like people seeing this are now going to miss out on the amazing second story about Anthony and Kate. Kate is also one of those female characters that has been written so beautifully well, she is strong, independent but also human with such believable insecurities and flaws.

What really irked me (other than the sexism, racism, everything) was how in the later books like Anthony and Colin were like "eww this woman whos gonna become our wife later is ugly and weird, let's be mean and randomly kiss them in a drawing-room because they're cute in a rat way." And everything with Anthony in the books SCREAMS abusive and is praised in a weird way for not hitting his wife even though he expresses a lot that he wants to.

THANK YOU! I couldn't stand how Anthony's toxic behavior was somewhat praised in his book. I just couldn't get why Quinn wrote her some of her male characters to be so insufferable.

Every point you made was everything I thought about while reading this book. So so disappointing. The video is awesome tho, 10/10, had great laughs and felt understood

This is why I can't take people serious when they say all fanfiction is bad, or that bad books are like "published fanfiction" Because honestly, especially overusing thesaurus or changing up writing style/vocabulary a lot, and especially chapter by chapter, are signs of when people first start out with writing I've picked up published books and from just the first ten pages you can tell the author has not gained a lot of experience (or feedback) yet, and have in contrast read fanfiction that was genuinely good, well thought-out, had deep thematic threads woven into the narrative, and has honestly evoked much more emotional reactions than most of the actual published books on my shelves That isn't to say that fanfiction is always better any and every time than published books, or superior in general, or that I don't also immensely enjoy books, no - but whenever I hear reviews like that it always makes me think of beginner-fanfics which give fanfics such a bad rep, when in actuality some _really skilled authors_ are putting out genuinely good work ( _for free!_ )

Also, throughout the later books, Quinn always says that Simon and Daphne love one another. Which might be true. But because of *that* scene, it just seems like she hopes people don't remember that it happened and take her word. Lots of rug sweeping on how terrible they both were.

After watching the series I was hyped and I wanted to read the book because I needed more from them. So I actually enjoyed the book in the beginning because it meant I could spend more time with the characters I loved on the show. BUT the more I read I was shocked how sexist and racist it was. In my opinion the series did a better job and now I just hope that the show runners will incorporate the criticism in the next season because I think that there is a lot of potential especially thinking about Penelope and Eloise.

You know, I think the sexism matter is not that deep. Things were like that at the time, and as you dive further into the series there are discussions on how hard it was on women. But it’s a historical romance so I honestly think that the characters being sexist is just the way it was, you know? Although I definitely think the theme should be discussed more often throughout the books.

@@kayleighoneill1555 I’m not entirely sure I get your point, but I was just saying that although it’s valid to dislike it when historical books have sexist characters, I also think it’s ok for those books to have those sort of characters - because that is what it was like, you know? And because some ppl - like myself - enjoy the historical aspect of it as well. (However, I think if a historical novelist chooses to stick to what things were like back then, they need to show that it’s problematic and encourage discussions on the topics)

i literally ran to read the books after watching the series. i just finished the third one. julia quinn recently did an interview where she talked about how when "that scene" was mentioned in the book in 2001, there wasn't talk about it, it was very much a "you go girl" moment for daphne but now post #metoo movement, and more discussion about consent it's something that is being talked about. i do think that there was a missed opportunity for dialogue about consent that we didn't get. but anyways, this was such a lovely video!

The fact that she and others at the time felt (perhaps even now) that it's empowering to see a woman... rape a man... is so disgusting that I want to vomit. An author unable to discuss basic issues like consent and lay out repercussions for such an act... shouldn't really be writing anything.

I read the book last year and I thought it was highly problematic. That one scene where Daphne assaults the Duke...just wow. And their relationship is as toxic as the the Fifty Shades’ couple. (Edited because I had to delete the „basically“ before „assaults“)
